  • Verizon iPhone Antenna Attenuation Issues

We are all far to familiar with the good ol "death grip" associated with the iPhone 4, so it's no surprise that similar issue are affectsing the Verizon iPhone even with its new antenna design.

iLounge has posted a video demonstrating the loss of cellular signal strength with the same "death grip", even crippling Wi-Fi reception by holding the device in your palms, dubbed the "death hug".

It had been thought that the Verizon phone would function somewhat differently as far as how the antenna works, but it appears it used the same design and carries the same flaws as the original iPhone 4.

While it should be noted, that this is generally only a huge issue if you already have a poor signal to begin with. I've been in many situations, where if the signal is strong to start, it won't attenuate nearly as much.

It's hard to disagree with the video. Any other Verizon users showing the same issues?

It doesn't surprise me, since very little design changes were performed. I hope the iPhone 5 is better designed, but who's to say; it may be the 'nature of the beast' in order to fit that low profile case.

Really? I mean really? If you try hard enough I'm sure you can make any cell phone lose signal. I don't like covering up my iP4's sexy design but I'd rather protect my phone with a case rather than trying to impress people by showing them I have an iPhone. Put a bumper on it and move on.

Yes is true, but I think you are not going to hold the iPhone like he's holding it while he is using internet or making a call, he's almost covering the whole antenna. Yes the issue exist but I think is less than before anyways. He's emulating like if you are close in one room, with 4 double walls around him. Welcome to Apple, Verizon... Don't think they are going to give you free bumpers this time because that video.

he does cover it in a way that no normal user will, but I tried the same way of holding on my Android (Samsung Captivate) and it does not lose signal. it only went down one from 5 bars to 4... so it is definitely an issue... and I hate cases, I never use one so it is a big problem for me, that is why I got rid of my iphone 4 and waiting for the new version to see if I can go back to apple

Im not saying that, Im just trying to give you an example of how he is holding the iPhone so it can lose signal, ok if you want to change my statement from 4 double walls to one room with an electromagnetic field or something like that, change it, you know what Im trying to say.

If you are going to hold your iPhone like in the video while you are using it, you need a walkie talkie...

Doesn't surprise me. If I have great signal it doesn't bother me but if I'm at home which I have 1 bar anyway then yeah SOL for me. But I'm pretty sure iPhone 5 will def be changed for that purpose otherwise what else is apple gonna talk about at the keynote. Everything else is perfect lol cept speed. Make it faster

wow. this is the stupidest thing i've ever seen. iLounge are a bunch of hitwhores, and apparently so is ModMyI for re-posting this garbage. "OMG IF I COMPLETELY COVER UP MY IPHONE IT LOSES SIGNAL" HELLO? Every phone EVER does that. Pathetic, iLounge and MMi.

I've never had a phone that does this, and I pretty much hold my phone the same way.

Anyone else find that video WAY too long? Who cares... I agree with orozcoj4, if you try hard enough (7 whole mintues) you can make any phone lose signal. I still think that Verizon isn't as special compared to ATT as everyone thinks.

      Oh no, this again!!!!

Seriously, if you don't like the iPhone 4, don't buy it/return it!!!!

I have never had a problem with mine, but I'm sure that I can find a way to make the signal drop bars..... On just about any cell phone.

The iPhone is the best cell phone on the market!!!!!

Oh wait!! another flaw... if you go on a cruise, you will lose service in the middle of the ocean... (/sarcasm)

hold the phone like a normal person, you won't lose wifi

I think this antenna issue should be dropped. If apple sees this as an issue they might add antenna to the next iPhone. I personally done have an issue with my phone and I don't use a case or a bumper. The only solution to the antenna issue is to add an antenna like the old phones the very unattractive flimsy antennas. I like my phone with my antenna built into the frame I don't want to have that stupid looking antenna. So please don't ruin it for the majority of us and stop making a big deal about the current antenna design.
