  • FIRST LOOK: iPocket and VoiceNotes for AppStore | by Erica Sadun

Erica Sadun, iPhone dev and blogger let us take a look at a couple of her upcoming AppStore apps before they actually hit the AppStore.

    iPocket

iPocket is a file browser with all sorts of connectivity options. Opening the application shows you the file browser of your local filesystem (the iPhone). You can view .plist's, images, text docs, etc all from iPocket. Clicking the Action button while viewing an item gives you all sorts of options on it, including emailing it, uploading it via FTP, and more.

One thing which I am really excited about but I couldn't get working properly was FTP. Erica notes in the Settings that FTP support is still beta, and can crash iPocket - which is what it did for me. I'm really looking forward to that, as grabbing a camera image, and then uploading it to MMi right from the iPhone would be extremely useful to me, and I'm sure plenty of you would love to be able to do the same on your sites, etc. Hopefully she'll get FTP stable soon, as this is a huge push for iPocket for me.

One other cool feature of iPocket (in addition to Bonjour support) is a built in http server. Simply open up the WWW section of iPocket, and turn on the http service. It will then give you a local web address which you can access from any computer on the same WiFi network as your iPhone, and you can browse your iPhone filesystem straight from Safari/IE/Firefox/wtvr you like.

    VoiceNotes

VoiceNotes is a nice new interface for Erica's 1.x app of the same name.

The GUI is about as easy to understand and simple as you could get - opening the app gives you a giant green button. Press it, and it turns red, and you're recording. Press it again and you've stopped recording. There's also a time counter letting you know how long you've been recording.

To access and play back your notes, hit the Library button in the top right of the screen. A scrollable list of all your recordings comes up, and when each is clicked it plays. You also get an easy trash button to delete them using the same Apple interface in Notes.app.

Recordings sounded great, and playback was easy. This is a great and useful app!

Both these apps are currently in the approval queue in the AppStore, so we should see them soon.

I thought Winterboard would've made the front page here. It got released on Cydia today and works nicely. There have already been 2 updates so he's doing a great job on it.
BTW, If you dont know what Winterboard is its a firmware 2.0 version of Summerboard so custom themes for 2.0 now work.
What is this Winterboard you speak of? :confused

Nice, I don`t know if in Chile the appstore is going to be avaliable, the only way to make it work at the moment is with prepaid apple gift cards.

if the appstore works from here I don`t mind payin a few dollars to support devs and buy some apps.

dont think apple will aprove this app.
Why do they even bother with AppStore? If you need the money, ask for palpal donations. Cydia work great and would never turn you down. This in MMi, many of us have a "hacker" mentality and do not want to pay for apps that could easily be free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont think iPocket will be allowed in, Erica should just give it to the Cydia people since iCommander sucks.

BTW, NetShare was taken off of App Store recently with no explanation.
my first thought was "no way apple will go for this" also, but come on people, read the whole thread before you post the same thing thing as 5 other people. here's a perfectly sensible reason why it might make it to the app store.

Highly unlikely Apple will allow iPocket. Why can't Apple just make a file browser like on all other phones so it's simple and replaces the photo app, as the photo app will be in the FileBrowser app.And to send files through Bluetooth or Email/MMS(hope they put in MMS in even if only recieves MMS, better than nothing)

      Why another voice recorder??????????????
There's already loads of recorders and sooooooooo many light apps.

(Btw, yes I'm a huge Metallica fan.)

Those apps look great. I'll gladly pay for any app made by Erica Sadun, because of all of the great work that she put in before the AppStore was even a blip on the radar.

*crosses fingers that iPocket will be approved*

Is Erica going to come up with a method of recording phone calls? That's something I would pay for.

Sounds like a cool app, but not something that Apple would allow because you can access the root system (from what I see in the screenshots).

it would be fresh if you could FTP to a friends iphone from across the state or world and add or remove files for them
