  • Pwnage - Custom Modded Firmware through iTunes

Now here's one we've been waiting for. You remember seeing the AMAZING Videos.

The long and short of it? After "pwn"-ing your iPhone using this method drummed up by the Dev Team, you can install custom .ipsw files directly through iTunes. Huh, say you? It means, open iTunes, Option/Shift Click Restore, choose your modded firmware file, and voila - jailbreak/unlock/Installer/Cydia when its done restoring! No extra steps!

They will release two tools when this is public - iPwn to Pwn your iPhone, and .IPSW Builder to "modify the .ipsw filesystem, i.e. pre-jailbreak, pre-unlock, pre-activate, and create a complete custom .ipsw installation. In case you are already unlocked you can even tell it to disable the baseband update, just in case. Restore or Update from iTunes with custom .ipsw file and Voila! no more hassles after that."

And they've even given a TON of info on how they did it.

    Not bad, guys. Not bad.

yeah sure thats great...now make my phone work on 3G with a software fix so i dont have to buy another one in the summer when apple realeses the 3G capable monster leaving me with a 2 1/2G weakling. that is cool though maybe now that apple has been pwned they will stop being btiches and leave cuztimization up to us (ever sence 1.1.3 my phone has never matched the customization and ease of adjustment of 1.1.2) hopeflly when the sdk realeses it will be nice and simple again

Is this for people who run an iphone without an att contract? I can see why syncing through itunes would be annoying not to have...

why is everyone so hype over this? what extra things will this bring us that we cant do already? jailbreaking+unlocking an iphone is hardly time consuming, and we can already make and install our own 3rd party apps. i might be missing something? what is the hype?

this means that to jailbreak, activate and unlock an iPhone, all you would have to do is restore through itunes.

If you're used to jailbreaking, this might not seem like much...we can already jailbreak and having software pre-installed on your iphone is only a slight benefit.

If, like me, you've come so close to launching your iPhone out the window because you've followed the instructions 37 times and your phone's still taunting you with the damned apple/restore mode logo, this is brilliant news. No need to download any extra applications to jailbreak. no hassle trying to figure which option in ziphone applies to you. No need to input console commands because a program doesnt have a graphic interface.

this method will take away all of the hassle, 90% of the questions and reduce jailbreaking/unlocking/activating to a single shift+click. fantastic work guys. Hope to see it soon

When is this going to be released? I've restored my phone 3 times today and I keep thinking how helpful this would be.

Hey this might be a dumb question...but if I understand this allows for custom firmware?? So could you, in theory, load a different operating system(example: Windows) if someone had the time to invest into making it?

Why would you want to install Windows? Had it on 3 different phones and all had problems. The biggest problem I had with Windows was crashing and locking up for no reason. Apple mini OS X is much better.
