  • iPad 2 Announcement This Month, Shipping in March?

The rumor mill is getting closer to settling on an announcement date for the iPad 2. According to a report from MacOkatara, which has occasionally provided accurate intel from the Asian supply chain, Apple will hold "a small event" to announce the next-generation tablet at the end of February. This report suggests the iPad 2 will be available - at least in the US - some time in March. A separate report states that more than half of the first run will be 3G devices.

During the Chinese New Year, from February 3rd to February 17th, "everybody goes home" from the cities where China's electronics manufacturers are located. As a result, MacOkatara notes, production has halted on the iPad 2, and is not expected to resume until after the holidays. According to supplier checks, five million second-generation iPads will ship in the first run of manufacturing, with most of those being 3G models. Ming-Chi Kuo told AppleInsider that 38% of the first production run will be WiFi iPads, with 46% UMTS (AT&T compatible) WiFi+3G units and the remaining 16% shipping with Verizon compatible CDMA 3G radios.

The source for MacOkatara's late-February announcement is unknown, but it's in line with other reports that indicate that production has already begun, and increasing numbers of accessories and replacement parts making their way to third parties. The second generation iPad is expected some time around the one-year anniversary of the original model on April 3, and it makes sense that Apple would move the released date up a bit to steal some of the thunder from tablets just now being released by competitors.

Looks better than what? The next iPad hasn't been introduced yet so what are you comparing it to? Also apple is not going to lower prices on the first gen iPad either lol. Whe have they ever done that? The 3GS doesn't count since that's now a 2 year old product.

Just sell it. You would get way more money than with a trade in.

Hm, I wonder how the pricing will tier.
Will they downgrade the iPad 1 prices a little, and keep the same pricing scale they have now?

I got an iPad wifi for christmas from target, I have until march first to return it for a gift card. Really considering doing that late Feb, getting the card and hoping to try and land one in Target at some point :P

It would be nice if they add AWS T-Mobile 3G capability for this but I highly doubt they will. If they did I'd buy one right away but if not I'm looking at the T-Mobile G-Slate.

Wait. Why would they make it 3G? They need to make 4G iDevices. Maybe then the Android Fanboys will STFU with their bragging!

Then what would they sell you next year?! Seriously though, the 4G market is still infantile so it's not worth it to Apple to bring to the market now what they can entice you with in the next model.

      Put it on craigs list.
Think of it like a new computer, they won't give a trade in value, especially apple. They have the highest resale value as well

The 3G model comes with an aGPS receiver. Tethering for data is fine, but GPS is a nice feature to have. I wouldn't mind mounting this in the car and tethering to my phone for data and using this for TomTom.

I would rather get the wifi one and tether with mywi especially with the new mywi on demand feature, it's super easy now. It also wastes much less battery than regular wifi tethering so I definitely recommend the newest version of mywi.
