  • Three iPhones to be Announced in June?

It isn't as crazy as it sounds. According to a report by the Commercial Times apple will be launching three iPhones in June. First a 2.75g (edge like the original iPhone), an updated 3g, and a Chinese targeted CDMA version. The updated 3g phone is no surprise as we have already been expecting it for months.

The CDMA version is a direction Apple will have to go eventually if they want to put the iPhone on every network worldwide. If released possibly some hacking could put that CDMA phone on carriers like Verizon (who refused the iPhone originally).

The new edge version if it really is real would most likely be very similar to the original iPhone. In fact why not just pick up a 1st generation iPhone off of ebay? I can't really see it as Apple's style to go backwards in product development but it could be a decent move if marketed as one of those phones that you get for free when signing a contact with a carrier -- fully subsidized.

Might as well throw in here that the Commercial Times report specifically denies the possibility of an iPhone nano. No mini iPhone for you!

    [via slashphone via gizmodo]

edit: if it isn't obvious that is just an artist's concept of the next iPhone. The image is NOT a real 3rd generation iPhone

I don't think it's gonna happen, it would defeat the purpose of the touch screen and I think Steve hates slider (fixed) keyboard.
See what he said at the first 2007 iPhone launch:

I for one would absolutely get a new Edge based iPhone provided it had the rest of the same bonuses as the new 3G phones (better camera, video recording, MMS, more space, etc.) Who really knows what they're going to come up with. The reason I'll take an Edge phone over some 3G phone is because i pay $5.99 for unlimited internet on t-mobile....$5.99.... Of course this is assuming the new iPhone is unlockable. I won't adopt next gen network until the price of it comes down a bit and you can break the kung-fu grip i have on my t-zones plan.

You mean like the 3G 16Gb is in the UK?
You guys pay way to much in the USA.

Not sure about a new 2.75G one - without decent 3G the iPhone is neutered (which is why I won't use it on O2 in the UK) but if you can't get 3G couldn't they just offer 2.75G data plans? Not sure why they'd need tpo offer different hardware unless it was cut down in other ways - which seems to be not what people want - unless it's cheap.

A CDMA version for China? That's the first time I've heard that one. Given the collapse of talks with the 2 Chinese carriers that don't use CDMA, maybe they are in talks with the 2 that do - but I would be surprised if talks had advanced far enough to start production for July given that the talks with Unicom (I think that's right) have only just collapsed.

I've still yet to hear anything that would want me to upgrade my 3G, I'm sure they will release a 32Gb version and a better camera - but I'm surprised it's only 3.2Mp if the rumours are correct.

Front facing camera for video calls? I've had the ability for the past 5 years and used it twice - not all it's cracked up to be!

I wonder what Apple will pull out of the bag to surprise us!

The picture is fake. Why are people trying to draw points and find clues about the upcoming model from a fake picture?

So to sacrifice speed in a phone high quality phone just doesn't sound ideal. After, Apple only produces "High quality products."

So in short, this rumor is sh** and I'll be waiting for the announcement of the "Iphone 3g Pro" in june

The screenshot is only a mock-up of what the next iphone COULD look like
I don't know man. There are plenty of iPhone and Blackberry users alike who only have the phone as a status symbol anyway. A friend of mine still has the original iPhone and really couldn't care less about not having 3g or GPS. I remember reading something several months ago to the sound that ATT was working with apple to change its iPhone data pkg. What if apple released an edge phone and didn't require an expensive data plan. That might not be a terrible idea.

In Dev team I trust! Once this phone hits the retail market, I am sure the Dev team will do all it can to make this phone accessible to most networks. All of us should give thanks to the Dev team, because without them, we would have to suffer with ATT as our only provider. Thanks Guys!

I would like it if they made the new model able to use all 3g bands. A 5mp camera would be great as well.

Why on Earth should thay? So People can jailbrake it and use it on T-Mobile in the USA? They have an exclusive deal with AT&T and the rest of the world (near as makes no odds) uses the same 3G band as AT&T

Why can't all of us have access to the Iphone? ATT in my opinion is garbage. I have had their service in the past. Their customer service is useless unless you speak 5 different languages! You better make sure you call between 8-5 m-f or prepare to bust your best foreign tongue! I am not going to dwell on this, all I am saying is that all should be able to have the services of the Iphone, without the hassle of the ATT domination! The Dev Team makes that possible.

Hate to pick up on one of your UK vs USA quotes again, but just so its clear to anyone else reading this thread not every 16gb 3G iPhone bought in the UK is fully subsidized by the carrier - far from it.

And the landscape keyboard is surely a move to aid the tablet?!

Come on people. This is a photoshopped image. Stop getting hung up on this. Nobody (but Apple) knows what the new iPhone will look like. Besides, think about the image for a second... how the hell would they be able to fit a decent battery in that form factor???

You are talking about ATT here man... they won't drop the price on the plan LOL. They will probably justify it by making the edge phone cheap (free-ish) and the new 3G more expensive on sign-up.

That being said, ATT should improve their 3G coverage rather than Apple selling an Edge phone. They are way behind the times... If a CDMA version does get released in China you can bet the Chinese will be hard at work to unlock and sell to the US for over a thousand bucks.

contracts between Apple and ATT... simple as that. You can bet when they expire we will see iphones on virtually all US carriers. until then it's ATT's golden egg.

I didn't see the poster say they SHOULD do it. He simply said he would like it. Large difference there. (I nitpick because you do the same)

The image is just there as a placeholder, something to look at. Nothing more. I think most people are aware of this. Those who are not... fools.

Very true, but the more you pay on your monthly contract the cheaper the phone.
On a 24 month contract the 8Gb is free on a 35/month contract and 16Gb is free on a 45/ contract

It is not a straight comparison as in the UK you get minutes and texts but in the US you get no texts but unlimited w/e (and evening?) calls and AT&T's 3G network works...
    1. reeko's Avatar

The whole American mobile phone system is different to ours, completely and utterly different. Almost uncomparable.

      And

      34.26 per month + 57.74 for the 16gb

      34.26 x 24= 822.24 + 57.74 = 879.98 total cost

      44.05 per month + 16gb free

      44.05 x 24 = 1057 total cost

So no, the phone is not free, its 177.02 more expensive than the 35 a month contract, which in my eyes does not warrant the extra 600 minutes you get anyway. it is subsidized more, and they recoup the costs by charging you even more pounds for a service which costs them pennies to provide you. The whole skype fiasco is showing the mobile providers up for the robbing thieves they are.

This is also the same idiotic logic people use NOT to buy an iPhone - because they have to pay for it. people are set on getting the handset free with the contract and cant open their eyes to the bigger picture. People will get a serikson or nokia all day long because they are free on contract, but the resale value of these phones is next to nothing after the contract expires - Apple products hold their value and you can recoup a good amount of money on an iPhone THEN upgrade, which means over the long period an iPhone actually costs you LESS and you get MORE for your

And please stop comparing the UK to the USA. We get screwed sideways for pretty much ANYTHING!

Except the cheapest US plan is 47/month on a 24 month contract and they have to pay for the phone on top (and extra for texts) so I don't think we get to bad a deal here in the UK.

Mind you, I just got mine off eBay (276 for 8Gb) and pay T-Mob 20.51 a month for Flext 35 and W'n'W Plus which suits me.

But maybe I'm just easily satisfied

3G works for all carriers so far when you look at the world spectrum. T-Mobile USA is the only carrier IN THE WHOLE WORLD who uses a different 3G band for some reason.

Smells like garbage info to me. No carrier wants to help its subscriber not move towards its next generation networks. Hence an edge only version makes no sense to me. In general, i think apple products work best with bigger broadband pipes connected to them. So i can't imagine they would want to make an "edge only" version. A CDMA version would be interesting.
