  • Video-in + iPhone = Really Cool Augmented Reality Apps

The folks over at TouchArcade snagged videos some very impressive augmented reality programs by Blair MacIntyre, an Associate Professor at the School of Interactive Computing at Georgia Tech. The apps displays the video that the iPhone is picking up on the screen and then overlays 3d objects on top of it to make the appears as if they are in reality. Above the video is a demo of a neat app that places a dog into the video that the iPhone is picking up that responds to touching the screen. Below is a demo of this technology being used for gaming. Where was my head at when I was writing this earlier? One video. Both the dog and the zombie killin in the same video

While the concept is REALLY cool there are some negatives. One of the largest is that the application in its current form seems to require the correct backdrop to work. The virtual pet appears above specific squares. The zombie game needs a backdrop of streets and towers. Having to carry around a back drop for the app/game you want to use might be difficult to market.

    Regardless, cool factor 100%

      It's really a cool concept.
      About the front camera,
It's not the camera is in the front. It's cutout holes on the case to allow the light sensors to work, otherwise the screen will shutdown.

      looks awsome.
Sounds like its made for pc's also.
Seems like you will be able to play many board games withought having all the extra bits to go with them.
Might be good if you are a secret agent and you want to carry a map and give your parner a demo of your assignment

This is awesome technology and blows me away. I could definitely see these markers being embedded on McDonald's bags and Burger King whopper boxes with the "King" popping out of the top of the box saying things like "enjoy your delicious burger!" haha, I can't wait until this is developed more!

i think this would do wonders for the dungeons and dragons type board games or even that cartoon (yugio sp?) if the decided to make a game out of it. plus with the peer to peer bluetooth. definetly alot of potential.

That's what I was thinking, having the markers at predefined locations where you can interact with them and they could interact with your device and the information on it to give you a personalized response "Minority Report" style.

This could take off into something unbelievably cool. Imagine board games mixed with MMO. Or something of the sort. This is like the EyeTV thing they have for PS3, only way cooler. The possibilities would be awesome

Damn... this goes far beyond the iphone... can we all try and put up a bunch of ideas of what this tech could be used for or become?? I'm thinkin there could be some seriously cool implications for the technology (asside from the "cool factor" and the obvious gamming implications)
