  • SlingBox's SlingPlayer submitted to AppStore

Back at MacWorld, we chatted with the guys over at SlingMedia about their upcoming plans for an iPhone release of their SlingPlayer.

They've just announced they've submitted the app to the AppStore, and we're all now just waiting for approval. We've learned by now that Apple's approval process is about as predictable as the next episode of LOST, but here's hoping the app will be approved within the week or so.

I know I've been excited about shredding through some 3G network to catch up on 24 while I'm away from home.

For those of you who don't know - SlingMedia retails the SlingBox, a device which lets you watch your DVR and cable TV from any browser on supported platforms (including OS X and Windows, sure) and many smart phones as well.

hey, i'm into sling, but wtf???

it's cool watching stuff on the lappy when your away, but do you ever put movies or anything on your phone?

i could never watch anything on the phone unless it's an emergency.

this is just a show off thing.

now, if we could stream off the phone and somehow project it on a wall, that would be unique.

That is EXACTLY what I can and WILL do! I have this and use it now the Optoma Pico PK101- and will use it with sling on my iPhone, as soon as it gets released -

You are officially too cool for the room I didn't know this even existed...I'll hafta check this out as I'm curious if it provides power to the phone or if your on battery all the way.

      Go Sox!

It's actually cheaper here in the UK (about $350) - the joy of having Sterling sink so low it's now on a par with the foil coated chocolate coin

Still far more than I can justify spending on a toy at the moment though....

You can charge the iPhone with the Optomo connected. If you look to the left of the cable connecting the iPhone to the projector, there is a mini-USB port. The projector actually comes with a mini-USB cable and a USB charger to use to charge the iPhone through that port.

They are available from many sources. Just do a Google search, and you will find plenty.

Guys just remember that hopefully sling has the API's that will allow them to do the video out. Other wise it will not work that great using something like TV screen splitter. As far as the pico projectors go, I have this one.

AAXA P1 Pico Projector - LCoS Based Hand-held Micro Projector - LED Pocket Projector

It works quite well and I have had a very viewable picture in a dark room that was 96 inches projected onto a projector screen.

This is fairly new technology. There will be many pico projectors to come, even in this year. You can look that within five years, many cell phones/pda phones will have this technology built right in.

Regarding the projector that hs133a has, note that a cable to connect it to the iPhone is not included.

Regarding ability to output... it won't work with slingplayer... alone. But, download a program called TVout (found in Cydia) and you will be good to go.

No doubt people are going to start saying that this will be included in the new iPhone to be released this year then....

Quick comparison of the Optoma and AAXA projectors -- while the Optoma is more expensive (about $100 when you account for the cable you need to buy with the AAXA), I like the fact that the connection cable for the Optoma looks significantly longer, meaning you don't need to have your iPhone sitting right next to the projector.

only those people who don't read. I said that "within five years." Nothing I said should be construed to mean that ANY phone - including the iPhone - has this as a part of any planned release.

My statement implies that this technology is capable of being included as a hardware feature within a cell phone, and industry experts expect that it will be used that way - within five years.

Which appears to be rather a lot of people....

I know what you said - but I bet it doesn't stop it appearing on someone's list of what will be in the next iPhone.

haha, that is brilliant. is it any good?

It is excellent. The sharpness is superb. The brightness is better than expected, although it is not good in direct bright light. I purchased it for the specific purpose of doing powerpoint/slideshows while in a small meeting at, say, a restaurant or a small meeting room with a group of 4-6 people. Works perfectly for this.

another reason slingplayer for iPhone will NEVER get released is because AT&T offers a TV service for devices like the LG-VU. With Apple selling tv shows on itunes and AT&T selling TV via its own network, it will never happen. We will see an app for AT&T mobile TV before we see this.
