  • Want 3.0? Don't Have an iPhone Developer Program Account? Devs are Selling Spots.

With the pure awesomeness of iPhone 3.0 features many want to upgrade. There are a couple small catches though. First of all to (legally) download the iPhone 3.0 firmware you must be a registered with the Apple iPhone Developer Program at the cost of $99. Next, if you snatch the firmware off of a torrent you're out of luck because your iPhone's Universal Device ID (UDID) is not linked with a registered developer's account in the iPhone Developer Program making it fairly useless.

Tipster happyaxekillercob pointed out to us that slots in dev accounts have made it to ebay. With a "Buy it Now" price of $0.99 and "shipping" of $9 the grand total to get a slot in a dev account and run some working 3.0 firmware is $10 instead of the $99 it costs to join the iPhone Developer Program.

Another MMi reader with a dev account sent us a tip about his website to do the exact same thing. His prices are $15/slot but according to the email he is happy to give a 30% discount to MMi members making the grand total $10.

Your options if you just can't wait for Firmware 3.0:
    1. Register in the iPhone Developer Program through Apple for $99.
    2. Grab a spot for your UDID in a pre-existing dev's account for $10.
    3. Find a kind friend that will add your UDID for free.
    4. Wait.
    5. Jailbreaking is awesome = wait.

I got to play with 3.0 today and will echo what others have said for the most part. Wait. I was given the option of getting a slot and could have had my phone updated, but at this point its not worth it to get a bunch of features that work pretty stable now with jailbroken apps, to work buggy with offical beta versions.

Upon a fresh reboot things seem fine, but maybe its a memory issue or something, but after launching a few things, and after some things crash, the whole phone slows down. I literally counted to 20 for the SMS app to open, then the thing had 1 SMS, with 3 lines of conversation in that one SMS.

Best advice I can give? If you want to see it, find someone who has it and play, or honestly wait, and leave this release to the dev's that its meant for. While it works, its far from a production release IMHO.

Internet browsing is unbearable. I'm sure this will be fixed in the official version though. The forward, reverse, play/pause buttons on the headset do nothing when pressed. On a good note, once you pair the headset, it will automatically connect if you turn your headset off then on again. I thought this was fairly seamless.
Quick question, will the iphone Bluetooth headset work as a bluetooth stereo headset. or do i have to buy a BT headset specifically for stereo?

Not necessarily. I've had 3.0 for a week now and am loving it. Copy & paste, MMS, Spotlight, etc. It's great, and pretty stable, too.

I did downgrade to 2.2.1 once, but that was just to see if I could.

But for some reason visual voicemail was not working for me.
I hear it is disabled but then some people claim it works for them.
I just called myself, left a short message and then I got the prompt for the voicemail password; it worked fine after that.

      Is the downgrade difficult?
I used Windows XP, and I can only speak from my personal experience, but my downgrade to 2.2.1 went very smoothly.

I got this method from Mocque on MacRumors, and it worked perfectly for me, at least:

      on a Windows Computer

      1) open itunes
      2) get iphone in DFU mode
      3) select restore iphone (using the original 2.2.1 firmware, not the custom one)
      4) let iphone do the restart process until you get ERROR 1013
      5) close itunes
      6) open quickpwn. you will get a message saying to hold power and home for 15 seconds. do it exactly like that hold the power and home for 15 secs.
      7) turn on iphone by holding power button for 2 secs
      8) open itunes and BINGO iphone is recognize and activated

any devs interested in adding my udid to their developer acct, pls pm me. I'm not looking to "buy" 3.0, but I'd like to take an active role in app development by testing new apps for developers. I'd like to start contributing to the community that way. I don't know much about coding, but I can help by testing from an end-user standpoint. Pm me if interested. Thx.

I wonder what Apple is going to do....I really don't think APPLE is going to like people making busines with their work behind their back! Plus this is wrong developers! If the Appple Gods allowed all developers to beta test the firmware you shouldn't be making business out of it.
What this is going to cause is Apple to allow betas only to the first devs like it was doing before.
