  • SDK 3.0 - Developers are Happy

With the announcement of the iPhone OS 3.0 comes the announcement of the 3.0 version of the iPhone SDK.

The new SDK is available now(ish) from the Apple Developer Center to registered iPhone developers.

Apple claims over 1,000 new APIs are included for developers, allowing for a host of new features in your iPhone apps. In-app purchasing will allow for devs to create and vend new content (think new level packs or maps, new comics, special weapons/characters in games, etc). This is a huge new market for iPhone developers who have been frustrated with the initial push in income from an iPhone app which quickly dwindles to a trickle - and a good way to keep users happy with their apps. Dynamic content makes for an app you'd like to come back to more often.

Peer to peer connectivity is now directly accessible from the SDK, meaning you can play your friend via Bluetooth (no pairing required) in games, or transfer files directly to each other through apps that could come out - or updates to existing apps.

Push notification finally going live means quasi-backgrounding. Apps can now send an SMS, trigger an alert, or add a badge even when your app is not running.

The External Accessory framework is pretty cool too - make the iPhone into an external remote for any hardware device, connecting to it through the 30 pin connector or with Bluetooth. Hey Sony - you hear that? My PS3 wants my iPhone to control DVD playback. A $1.99 app is way cheaper than that $30 DVD remote you sell.

There's a ton more - like Maps included in-app, or access to the iPod library including playback etc. Download the SDK and start writing!

I think mobile me is different than an actual application using push. I think it has to do with the servers they are on. And that mobile me just fetches new emails whenever you tell it to. Not really sure though. I'm sure someone will chime in later on today.

Mobile Me actually uses the Push Implementation. Remember how they were talking about the Cloud system etc. We make a change online and it syncs it almost immediately with our phone and our macs whenever we get logged in.

I do believe the MMS ability is being blocked by AT&T they are scavengers and will probably charge at least another $10 a month once the official version is released. I am going up to the AT&T store today to talk with a rep to see if they can unblock MMS on my account and show him that I have the developer version. I know it will only be unblocked for at most 1 day before the system blocks it back itself but I hope to be able to send and receive a couple MMS to test functionality.

Yeah, but that is probably a temporary issue due to traffic, etc.

Let me know if you finally get it, though.

If you are a paid developer, you need a mac to install; as the 3.0 beta software download is a dmg file -- appears you must install something before you can get to the .ispw file -- unless I am reading something wrong.

Gotta have XCode on your MAC as well to find your UDID to register your device with Apple's Developer Program.

Have the UDID registered with Apple; jsut don't have the Mac anymore to use the dmg to access the ispw

My friend paid the 99 bucks so he could get 3.0 He reports the same thing as above.

Also, on a follow up to if the new 3.0 API will allow dev's to create video recording apps.............

“This API is for playing video, not for recording.”

Will the new iPhone 3.0 OS/SDK video API let qik be released in the normal Apple appstore this Summer 2009?

      Damn,
Good things Jailbreak 3.0 is ready to go though!

I called AT&T about the MMS, they transferred me to Apple's iPhone support team. They then proceeded to tell me everything I need is on the developers forum. Sucks I'm not an "official" developer.

It does not matter if you have a copy of the 3.0 firmware, it is locked down via the developer site to your specific phone's unique identifier #.

So they did say it should work?
I'll check the forums and get back with anyone who asked about it working on the beta.
      Hope I can find it.

So quick question... I finally registered as a paid developer, when you put a beta on the phone, does it still allow you to use it as an actual phone with service to make calls?

      Yes.
As long as you have your device registered.
