  • id Software Bringing Wolfenstein, Quake, and Doom to iPhone

    In a recent interview with MTV.com id Software founder John Carmack spilled the beans revealing id's plans to bring the classic titles of Doom, Quake, and Wolfenstein to the iPhone.

    But literally before I came in on this interview, I was going around poking with some of our old titles. I’m really looking forward to bringing over an id classics line — start with “Wolfenstein 3D” and go through “Doom” and “Quake” and bring pretty much all of them over to the iPhone because I’m a really big booster of the platform. And it frustrates me to no end that here we are without product yet shipping in the iPhone. We’ve had a couple of thwarted attempts at different things. I’m frustrated about it and trying to do something about it. [laughs]
    Carmack went further mentioning that they already have Quake III running on the iPhone and that Wolfenstien RPG is nearing completion. He also mentioned that in the future he would like to bring the entire Doom and Quake lines to the iPhone.

    Looks like id is taking some hints from the Jailbreak community which has had both quake4iphone and Doom available via Cydia for quite some time.

      I guess they realized there was a market when people started porting the games as jailbreak offerings, just about a year late though

      I wonder what control system they will use, because the iPhone doesn't really lend itself to these kind of games.

      most likely just a d-pad and buttons on the screen... not much else they can do IMO

      With all these official ventures into the iPhone world, you think Apple would take notes. I mean two posts, one right after the other in one day. (first the "dashboard" thing, now an entire line of classic titles officially ported...)

      Seriously Apple... what have YOU done for the iPhone lately?

      Ok, I really hope you are kidding, but just in case you're not, let me give you a friendly reminder that APPLE HAS CREATED AND DEVELOPED THE IPHONE, MARKETED IT PROPERLY AND MADE IT A HUGE SUCCESS SO THAT PEOPLE LIKE ID, SAURIK, AND ALL THE OTHER GREAT IPHONE DEVS _HAVE_ A PLATFORM TO CREATE FOR AND PORT FOR.

      Now, ignoring that both posts pertain to ports from both Apple and Id to the iPhone, what have YOU done for the iPhone lately?

      Sorry to burst your bubble bud, but is it conceivable, to you, that perhaps the previous poster was referring to the fact that Apple hasn't contributed/added any real useful features or produced any applications to close the gaping big hole they left for 3rd party developers to fill??

      If you haven't been reading the numerous articles lately on Apple's stance on the legality of Jailbreaking, then that would explain YOUR misunderstanding. Apple have indeed produced the best bit of mobile comms hardware for the consumer...period! But....without jailbreak and Cydia backed 3rd party developers, the iPhone/iPhone 3G would be nothing special due to its many shortfalls.

      Do I really need to elaborate on my point? Thought not.

      P.S. Take it easy, you've been here....what? 5 minutes? and write like your replying to a 10 year old. You stated the obvious, but failed to look/read between the lines.

      Well, I have to agree with your entire post. You pretty much backed me up on everything I said, thanks. Without knowing it you've answered more questions than I even thought to, in the form of questions and complaints.

      No bubble burst bud You've just been pwned by Apple's absolutely amazing marketing scheme. By leaving easily filled flaws in their fabulous product, and introducing a means for people to 'fix' these gaps, not only have they popularized their presque parfait product, but they're also raking in the dough from AppStore revenues.

      If you'd been following Apple throughout the years (When did you use your first Apple computer? My first time was in 1993 ), you'd have noticed a particular pattern emerge from press releases, statements, software and hardware. Every time Apple makes a move into the market, their products are aimed at inspiring creativity and ease. It comes as no surprise to me that the iPhone is as powerful as it is, and yet Apple ly supports what they're allowed to do with it, not what they CAN do with it... I'd be willing to bet my next paycheck that Steve Jobs' iPhone is Jailbroken . Point being, Apple's nose is completely clean of anything having to do with Jailbreaking. As long as they stay on the "I think piracy and copyright infringement is BAD" line of things, they're fruity bums are covered, while we, developers, pirates, grey-area specialists, provide them with free publicity and openly defy the powers that be.

      As for your comment about me being here for only 5 minutes, well that did hurt a little I've been a devout MMI reader ever since I Jailbroke my 3g (which I'm happy to say I got on launch day, being a new Rogers customer). I just never saw fit to actually post something.

      Man, i.d. better employ zodttd, or at least give him a bag of money. First of all, he's the one that discovered that the iphone was even powerful enough to run such a program (granted its not hard to look at specs, but getting it to run is a different story). Secondly, he packaged it (multiple updates, and the latest one rocks my socks). Third, he created the current following for the genre. They should at least hook him up with something expensive and shiny if they are going to start releasing the Quake series.

      Yes, Apple developed the damn thing. Yes Apple did what Apple always does and made it, like they make every thing else, uber simple and user friendly.

      Which means that they thoroughly believe that if it isn't broke, then don't ukFay with it.

      Never the less, this topic somehow has turned into a "my dad can beat up your dad" type of conversation.

      @ TheMerovingian. Damn..you took that well, lol. I apologise for being somewhat brash in responding to your post back there. You're a good sport...certainly a good sort. Your points, valid, have been taken on-board. ;p

      Back on topic now I am eagerly awaiting what ID can bring to the table, especially with the Quake series.

      Whatever happened to Bioshock coming to the iphone? Is it just me, or are most of the games on the Appstore seemingly lacking in terms of depth and immersiveness?

      Not really, if memory serves, quake is under a public gnu type license, or at least the engine is. I dont think its gnu persay, but something similiar.

      Never the less, regarding software under the DMCA, there is an intersting blurb regarding the term "reasonably obsolete". If a piece if software is no longer produced, then it can legally be made to run on newer systems for historical, archival and educational purposes. Of course that can mean a lot of different things, depending on how good at rhetoric you are, but there it is.

      Still the fact remains that i'm almost certain no laws were broken when quake was ported.

      Also, ID and Apogee have always been pretty lenient regarding who does what to their games.
