  • Sygic Demos Their iPhone Turn-by-Turn at MWC09

I previously mentioned at the end of our xGPS post that Sygic would be showing off their turn-by-turn navigation app at the Mobile World Conference this week and low and behold they did! Dieter Bohn of theiphoneblog had the opportuntiy to grab some shots and check out what Sygic has done.

The application looks very pretty with the fancy 3d view and is also packed with the features you would expect like voice prompts, POIs, multiple country support, directions, the maps stored locally on the phone (Europe=2gb), etc etc etc.

The bad news? The public probably will not see this app any time soon. Sygic plans on submitting it to the AppStore soon and the odds of it being rejected are nearly 100% since Apple has already made it clear that they do not accept these types of apps. Further bad news is that Sygic does not plan on distributing this as a jailbreak app if it fails Apple approval.

    Still looks pretty though . . .

Such a waste if Apple reject it.
Let the jailbreak gang use it, please.

Same as the TomTom one about a year ago. Either that was fake or Apple refused it and it never came to cydia.

This look really well done too. I'd like to see it, but based on the history of turn-by-turn coming. It likely wont happen with the married couple, Google and Apple. I like to see business colaborate to bring great things to the masses, not shun the ability from the competition to bring something inovative. It's obvious it works, they built it, now Apple get on the band wagon and let em release it.

Apple needs to stop being such **** heads and start letting good apps in to the appstore, but one thing that does need to go is those stupid fart apps.

Why wouldn't they release it as a jailbreak app? I mean, chances are this app will flop in the App store. So what? They just spend thousands of R&D/development hours and countless money for nothing?

If they were to release it on cydia, at least it would show apple people are definitely interested....

Jailbreaking just opens ones eyes to the TRUE capabilities of this amazing piece of technology... It is REALLY amazing that Apple would want to so badly limit their hardware to dumb-assed games... I mean seriously, how many times can you repackage an accelorometer game?! It is time to release truly USEFUL APPS!!!

It's such a shame that Apple will probably not let apps like this in. I perfectly understand when Apple rejects an app because it is dangerous (virus or whatever), but to reject this one would just be stupid. This is why regular iPhone/iPod Touch users don't even get close to having the full potential of their device. Thank God for jailbreaking!

Could the impending submission of apps like this be why Apple suddenly spoke out about jailbreaking being "illegal"? Perhaps they are still planning to implement a similar feature on a future upgrade so they want to make developers afraid of releasing to the jailbroken community? Or perhaps GPS navigation features will be a flagship feature of the supposed new iPhone to be released this summer?

Apple would not benefit from litigation against independent developers making a few bucks here and there but you get larger companies adapting already successful products to the iPhone and suddenly, if Apple does approve, and Apple says anything other than their appstore is illegal, they are forced to play ball with Apple, abandon their work, or risk litigation.

I'm not so sure... Wouldn't want to be drinving, following directions and sudenly, a call interupts the navigation and woops! The iPhone is the greatest thing, but it's not a swiss army knife... Best to let some apps aff the iPhone...
