  • Latest Firmware Hints at an Upcoming iPhone Model!?!
Apple launched the original iPhone 2 years back in June and then the iPhone 3G in July last year. As this is the third year in series, we all expect a newer version of this revolutionary device. What's better is that as per some solid proofs found by MacRumors, it seems that they have already been working on it!

The latest 2.2.1 firmware has an iPhone product model 2,1 hidden deep inside the metadata. Apple uses these numbers to differentiate different hardware versions. So, this hints at a new version of the iPhone as the model of current 3G version is just 1,2. This new model number can be located in USBDeviceConfiguration.plist of a decrypted firmware.

Another proof of the above is that a developer from PinchMedia have also pointed towards web hits from this new model number based on server reports.

Now, this could very well be a typo by some Apple software expert but for now, it seems to be quite truthful.

I have a 1st gen with iGPS360 - works great and I have all of the features now of a 3G iPhone, well, except for the 3G but I don't have that where I live anyway

With January's Macworld giving us nothing in terms of hardware innovation (apart from the new 17-inch MacBook battery which is just a feature and not a new business venture), there must be something big for the summer.

A new iPhone should be expected from Apple to do as there are enough technologies present in new smartphones that the 3g is lacking.

The PinchMedia is the confirmation from what we saw in the new Firmware. You can say anything you want about the 2,1 line in the firmware, but when the devices are actually being TRACKED in one specific area (San Francisco area) they do exist.

This talk of 4G by summer is nonsense. Who has a 4G network? Most carriers dont' even have ubiquitous 3G coverage yet. Do you really think AT&T has a LTE network all set up that they aren't telling anyone about so that they can flip the swtich on June 30th and say SURPRISE! iPhone 4G is here! If i had to guess on a new product just being a refinement.. or maybe they will get a wireless charger like the palm pre....

      but i have a question...

      if 3g is 1,2
      and 2g is 1,1

shouldnt it be 1,3 not 2,1???
maybe they name them the way they do firmware they only change the first digit for big changes like 2.0 software update introduced the app store but 2.1 didnt give anything to cool

the transition from 1,2 to 2,1 is why this update looks like it could be so significant. a 4g iphone by summer seems unlikely, wireless charger/syncing would be sweet.

Its nice to see another iPhone coming along, but what could it possibly hardware wise? Just about everything on an iPhone owner's wishlist is software related...

Better camera is the only hardware change I would really want. And not some crappy 5MP camera, something good with some nice auto-focus/shutter speed. I hate that 90% of the pics that I take on the phones that aren't at noon/bright lightning are a blurry mess.

That is so true it is nonsense talk. Just cuz there's been 2g and 3g doesn't mean 4g is next. There is no network that supports 4g and 4g isn't due for another 3 - 5+ yrs. It would be a waste of time for apple to create a 4g phone that cannot be used.

I see more software related changes than hardware. Maybe a new look of the phone itself. If there was a new network speed change maybe it would be 3G supercharged or 3gPP rel.8 (pre 4g) but i highly doubt it. But the Palm Pre seems to be the greatest challenge to iPhone so far. It's going to be one interesting competition!
