  • Real Copy Paste on iPhone with Clippy

EDIT: Another little copy pasted popped up a couple days later called hClipboard. Using Both Clippy and hClipboard together is the way to go .

What is the #1 most important basic feature that the iPhone has been lacking since day one? Copy & Paste. Yes it is more important than MMS; everyone would benefit from some nice copy/paste action (which is standard on nearly every other smartphone on the market). As of just a couple short hours ago the dream has come one step closer to reality with a Cydia app named Clippy.

Clippy is a new native app (not a web app) that allows you to copy paste between the stock iPhone applications like Mail, Safari, Notes, etc. While it doesn't work with some AppStore apps (it does however work in twitterverse & ireal) and you can only copy paste when you are editing txt it is a good step in the right direction.

To use you first need to be in the txt editor mode on the iPhone. In this case we're replying to an email. First drag the cursor over the text you want to copy, press the ".?123" button and select copy. Next move to whatever other app you'd like where you can edit text, press the ".?123" button again, and select paste.

Unfortunately you must have have the keyboard up to be able to copy/paste. This means if you want to copy from an email you received into a txt message you first have to hit reply to the email so you get a text editor so you can copy. I can come up with other examples but you get the idea. You also no can no longer drag the cursor between words/letters in text because now it just highlights for copy. Clippy also doesn't seem to be working for many third-party apps yet -- hit-n-miss for which apps it will work with.

Even though Clippy needs to be developed further to be more feature-rich and better integrated it does something that nothing else has (not counting web apps) so far by allowing you to copy paste between Apple applications on the iPhone. This is the closest anyone has come with the most potential to be improved into a viable copy/paste solution.

Great work so far by app dev Ryan Petrich! We look forward to improvements in the future!

Clippy is available via Cydia. Just refresh and search for "clippy."
Yup Cydia. Apple's limitations don't allow this sort of thing on the AppStore.

    thx billchase2 for the tip

Clippy and hClipboard co-existed fine on my iPhone, even though I've since gotten rid of Clippy.

Looks like CLIPPY and HCLIPBOARD bites the dust in the 3.0 firmware. I guess it was good while it lasted.lol :-)

      Does Apple's copy&paste offer a clipboard? I don't think Apple's implementation necessarily needs to kill Clippy/hClipboard.

You're right, and besides, who would want to wait for another half year or so when you can use these tools right now?

Good point. A clipboard would be more ideal than just 1 item at a time... So i guess its safer to say its only a matter of time.

Right. I'm still using them right now as well but isn't only a matter of time after the summer?

Don't get me wrong, I love clippy, but now that its CCP is going to be native it kinda defeats the purpose right? How many of us are using Magic Pad? Are we using any alternate calenders? Just throwing a thought or two out there.

Can't figure out how clippy dial works and Clippy scroll crashed everytime I try to scroll

In fact with the new addons, Clippy crashed the 2nd time i try to copy something from a webpage

0.97-2 is the buggiest version yet, on my iPhone. It rarely works. In text fields, copy-paste works most of the time. In Safari, the popup only says "Stack". In App Store apps it does nothing.

In 0.97-3 on my phone it works most of the time. Not in Cydia and some App Store apps, but in most other situations it does. EDIT: In the App Store itself, Clippy can only copy the application names, but not any text from the descriptions. I'd say it works with about 3/4ths of the apps I have tried.

One more round of bugfixing and they have created a really great way to copy-paste. I think it is no coincidence that the copy-paste function Apple put in firmware 3.0 looks a lot like Clippy: it's a typical Apple-style, user-friendly implementation.

0.97-4: more or less the same performance as 0.97-3. No luck in Cydia and some App Store apps, and in App Store it copies app names but not any other text -- though it did, once.

I have disabled the activation through the 123-button because simply clicking and holding inside the text also brings up the popup menu. Like it even better this way, completely intuitive. And have set the delay to 0.70s so it's become quite efficient. I really hope they manage to make it work everywhere.

Is it me or are these new updates for Clippy making it even worse? The popup just randomly starts showing when I haven't even touched the screen, it's being doing it a lot lately. I've increased the time aswell but still doesn't make a difference.
Apple might add a clipboard in the final version of 3.0, you never know.

same here. use to work excellent in toodledo and notebook, i could just double tap and drag which would highlight and copy/cut. now it almost never works in these apps and as mentioned the menu pops up for no reason when i move between screens in my apps. The first or second release of this was my favorite, it seemed to just work.
