  • Real Copy Paste on iPhone with Clippy

EDIT: Another little copy pasted popped up a couple days later called hClipboard. Using Both Clippy and hClipboard together is the way to go .

What is the #1 most important basic feature that the iPhone has been lacking since day one? Copy & Paste. Yes it is more important than MMS; everyone would benefit from some nice copy/paste action (which is standard on nearly every other smartphone on the market). As of just a couple short hours ago the dream has come one step closer to reality with a Cydia app named Clippy.

Clippy is a new native app (not a web app) that allows you to copy paste between the stock iPhone applications like Mail, Safari, Notes, etc. While it doesn't work with some AppStore apps (it does however work in twitterverse & ireal) and you can only copy paste when you are editing txt it is a good step in the right direction.

To use you first need to be in the txt editor mode on the iPhone. In this case we're replying to an email. First drag the cursor over the text you want to copy, press the ".?123" button and select copy. Next move to whatever other app you'd like where you can edit text, press the ".?123" button again, and select paste.

Unfortunately you must have have the keyboard up to be able to copy/paste. This means if you want to copy from an email you received into a txt message you first have to hit reply to the email so you get a text editor so you can copy. I can come up with other examples but you get the idea. You also no can no longer drag the cursor between words/letters in text because now it just highlights for copy. Clippy also doesn't seem to be working for many third-party apps yet -- hit-n-miss for which apps it will work with.

Even though Clippy needs to be developed further to be more feature-rich and better integrated it does something that nothing else has (not counting web apps) so far by allowing you to copy paste between Apple applications on the iPhone. This is the closest anyone has come with the most potential to be improved into a viable copy/paste solution.

Great work so far by app dev Ryan Petrich! We look forward to improvements in the future!

Clippy is available via Cydia. Just refresh and search for "clippy."
Yup Cydia. Apple's limitations don't allow this sort of thing on the AppStore.

    thx billchase2 for the tip

Wish the developer can make the menu bar not auto pop up in SMS everytime I press the "123" key. The times I want to text numbers and add punctuations are more than the times I want to copy text. I find myself clicking the Clippy close button ALOT.

Ideal scenario would be implementation into iKeyEx Keyboards (like hClipboard) which allows to the menu bar to be activated should I want to copy something. Else show me my sms text editing window when I wanna see what numbers I am typing.

I prefer the functionality of hclipboard, and don't like how the clippy menu comes up everytime when on the 123 menu, but I really hate having the intenational keyboard icon on my keyboard!

Makes it too hard to hit the 123 icon! Don't know what to do!

If some of you still aren't seeing this app in Cydia, I was having the same problem. The solution was (at least on my phone) was that I had too many sources installed. My phone would run out of RAM before finishing source refreshing could finish, causing Cydia to crash. Try removing a few sources one at a time until it refreshes sources without crashing. (worked for me)

I use both and like both but I will name 2 things I've noticed about Clippy that bug me.
      1) It can select text within Safari text fields now, but you can't select specific text within them. As I type this I'm trying to select a word and I can't. Try it in the reply section below, you can't. I'm forced to copy the whole thing. This applies to bookmarklets that turn text into input fields, which is not convenient. hClipboard can select specific text anywhere.

      2) The clipboard or 'stack' in Clippy takes a few more clicks. Here's the Clippy process: tap 123, tap 'stack, tap the item, tap close, tap ABC. hClipboard: tap the globe, tap the item, then the globe. 5 steps vs. 3 makes a difference.

Granted , these are all fixable, they haven't been yet, which is why I think hClipboard is better.

Sorry but the selection of the text to be copied it works from time to time at clippy. Anybody knows why or how to fix this problem?

There are many landscape texters right now. Take your pick: iRealSMS, mySMS, and BiteSMS

Yup, there are many! But to me, it seems like everyone I use takes a while to load each convo. or to reply, etc. etc. The stock SMS works fast. Push the app, opens instantly. Hit ur convo. opens fast. Other apps. have delays. Maybe its my iPhone or something.... lol

No, not just you. I used BiteSMS and now MySMS. I like both programs, but they take 8-10 seconds to open up. Pretty much unacceptable.
