  • iOS 4.2.6 Firmware for Verizon iPhone Goes Public

This one slipped by me the other day, but it appears that Apple has made a new firmware publicly available, iOS 4.2.6 Build 8E200, for the Verizon iPhone (iPhone3,3), which is only a few weeks away.

While the Verizon iPhone was being shown off earlier this month; Engadget showed it loaded with iOS 4.2.5, which leads us to believe that Apple has had some time to make changes and tweaks since we had first gotten a glimpse of it.

Don't get too excited though, this firmware is ONLY for the Verizon phone right now. Although it will be interesting to see what happens, as this means that the Dev-Team and other teams can take apart the IPSW and dig around inside to see what exactly is in store for Jailbreaking an Verizon iPhone.

You may ask, What is the difference? Well one big advantage to the newer firmware is that it includes the new personal hotspot feature.

MuscleNerd (Dev Team) thinks that the jailbreaking process of the Verizon iPhone shouldn`t be a problem:

If the i4 crypto engine couldn’t get those, it would have been bad sign for limera1n. But it did, so there’s still hope.
MuscleNerd: @damon_taylor If limera1n is still there, it means at *least* tethered JB on 0-day (and for those who buy early, forever)

Maybe the result will be just that. AT&T might have to allow it (for paying tether customers only, of course) because it will be a selling point for VeriPhones.

I am guessing that the FW for Verizon and AT&T iOS's will always be that .1 off, because there has to be coding differences for CDMA. I doubt you could load it onto an AT&T iPhone and get service... I could be wrong though.

What would the benefit of a portted Hot Spot enabled firmware be for AT&T customers if you would still have to jailbreak it plus pay the monthly fees. Seems like a lot of work for a capability we already have with MyWi.

On a completely functional level, does anyone know the differences of MyWi and Verizons Hot Spot app?

I thought the Verizon HotSpot feature for the iPhone is going to cost $20/month. Isn't that around the same price AT&T is charging for their tether option? If this is true, then who cares if it has HotSpot capabilities....it still won't be free to the user.

What happened to 4.2? Apple is allowed to skip firmware versions if they want.

I'm sure several thousand dumb$%#$%es will install this on their AT&T iphone "accidentally".

It will give you the "this device is not eligible for this firmware" message just like it does when you try and load a 3GS firmware on an iPhone 4 (or whatever mismatch you choose).

What I would like to know is.....
What if Verizon IPhone gets jailbroken? Will cydia applications/packages still be compatible with the Verizon IPhone once jailbroken?
I'm on T-Mobile and been waiting to make the switch . I need 3 speeds! Thanks in advance

Apple be playing! The next iPhone need to have a five band chipset like the new Nokia phones. 850/900/1700/1900/2100 that way I the iPhone will work on all GSM providers!

I don't see why 99% of them wouldn't. There's no hardware changes, appearances anyway, other than the different antenna. Only thing I could think that wouldn't work OOB would be 3GUnrestrictor, MyWi and things that do stuff to your network. The hardware should be exactly the same except that.

Pretty sure I read somewhere the current iPhone 4 has the hardware capability to use the T-Mobile 3G freak but it's disabled on the hardware level because of AT&T exclusivity when it was made. Don't think that all GSM carriers worldwide use exactly the same freaks. Thanks to both contracts with AT&T and Verizon being non-exclusive we may see Sprint and T-Mobile getting the next iPhone. Hopefully that'll mean actual competition between the carriers, maybe not on overall plan price but maybe on tethering and different voice/text/data plan prices. One can only hope anyway. :/

Where did you hear the iPhone has T-Mobiles network support disabled. That seems extremely unlikely

I'm wondering what Baseband the Verizon phones will have! If it will be in the 5.14.x range for 3GS or what? Maybe it will be at 6 for compatibility with IPad seeing how it's Verizon, and they r selling them already!

Anyone? If it's in the 6. Tells me using a iPod base on a 3G will be ok. At some point, they are going to catch up. And make things co-exsist. Why in gods green earth would they want to use so many different software ver for different companies. But then again it's Apple, and they don't understand the old adage of Kiss. (my electronics people) Keep It Simple Stupid! Lol
