  • No More Online iPhone Sales | 3g Data Prices
According to dallasnews.com there will be a new requirement for buying the 3g iPhone. You must buy it in person and activate it in the store.

    Direct quote from AT&T spokesperson
When customers purchase their new 3G iPhone, customers will activate the device in the retail store. This is the traditional wireless activation model that our customers are very familiar with. In-store activation should take just a few minutes and customers will be able to leave with their iPhone up and running. This will be especially helpful if any questions or issues arise during activation.
That fluff about helping people with questions is probably just the polite way of saying "We want the iPhones activated on our chosen carriers in front of us. We hope to kill unlocking. Muwahahahaha."

Pricing for the 3g iPhone was also announced:
    • With a two-year contract, the price of an 8GB iPhone 3G will be $199; the 16GB model will be priced at $299.
    • Unlimited iPhone 3G data plans for consumers will be available for $30 a month, in addition to voice plans starting at $39.99 a month.
    • Unlimited 3G data plans for business users will be available for $45 a month, in addition to a voice plan.

That's assuming each activation takes about 10 minutes. I'm sure they'll try to streamline the process as much as they can but regardless of what they do, I'm going to wait a couple of weeks before buying it just to avoid the rush.

I'm sure theres away I've already said for 454.00 you can have one with out a contract so I'm not saying you can't. I'm just saing that at&t and apple whant you to active the phone in the store so they get there money and there making it hard on us who like to unlock and jailbrake our phones. Just like the new app store. Whats that all about. Its there way of charging us for the installer that we can get by jaillbreaking.

You could, you just could be trapped into a contract with at&t or a giant fee

Well since you can't sell contracted phones over Ebay, and the cancellation fee for the required contract is an issue, then really there would be no profits

Lol why does it matter if at&t activation is required in store? Everyone living in Canada won't even need to go down to the states anymore since the 3G iphone is going to be released in Canada to at the exact same time. So unlockers could just buy it from rogers in Canada or at the Canadian apple stores. Also many wouldn't even need to unlock it cause a lot of us probably have rogers, (except those with t-mobile).

Just so you know the entire forum here isnt from canada and are using t-mobile US. thats why its a problem, also Canada is going to have the same activate in store policy as the US probably it wont even matter

I'm with AT&T but I use the iphone as a prepaid.

I wonder how that aspect will be handled. I put bogus info to activate which you probably can't do in person.

I wonder if a prepaid option will even be available to those who really fail or if they'll just ask for a big deposit or no iphone.

If I can't keep prepaid I won't get the new iphone, will just keep the one I have. My main reason for getting an iphone besides obvious was I didn't want to stay in a cell contract with sprint anymore. Don't feel like getting in another one.

1sick94hb, Apple Will Actually Help Their Sales By Allowing People To Activate From Home............. Just Imagine How Long The Line Would Be If You Had To Do That To Get The New iPhone Activated In The Store. That Would Be Extremely Stupid Not To Mention Time Consuming.
You Must Have AT&T...... Hi Hater LOL

You guys make no sense at all. How will at&t lose money if they force you to activate at the store? That prevents unlocking. If they let you activate at home your not forced to sign a contract (stupid noobs)

^^^^^Plus If All Fails I Will Buy The iPhone Then The Next Day I Will Cancel The Service. They Can't Make You Return The Phone........ I Will Raise H3LL or Say I Lost It.
That 14 Day Trial Service Is Still In Effect So Just Read The Fine Print!

They Can't Make You Keep Service That You Are Not Happy With Nor Return A Phone That You Paid For. If They Was Smart Or Really Wanted To Stop Unlocking They Would Sell The Phone For $500 & $600 Then Offer An Instant Rebate For 2 Year Agreement. That Would Be Where They Would Get The People That Don't Want The Service To Pay For Their Lost.

I Used To Work For Cingular So I Know....... Rusty Try Reading The Fineprint!

No, they charge you for an early termination fee if you cant return the handset plus the price of an unsubsidized phone

I have an idea but i dont know if it will work

I have a friend who is currently using ATT with an iphone they got after May 27th, so they would be able to get a free 3g if they up their contract two years. So if I took them into the Apple store, and they up their contract and get a 3g phone (im assuming they trade in their old iPhone)
They could add another line to their plan (which i think is 10$) and get another 3g iPhone.
Then the next month could they cancel that extra line or would ATT kill the credit card and charge an extreme amount for the phone?
