  • No More Online iPhone Sales | 3g Data Prices
According to dallasnews.com there will be a new requirement for buying the 3g iPhone. You must buy it in person and activate it in the store.

    Direct quote from AT&T spokesperson
When customers purchase their new 3G iPhone, customers will activate the device in the retail store. This is the traditional wireless activation model that our customers are very familiar with. In-store activation should take just a few minutes and customers will be able to leave with their iPhone up and running. This will be especially helpful if any questions or issues arise during activation.
That fluff about helping people with questions is probably just the polite way of saying "We want the iPhones activated on our chosen carriers in front of us. We hope to kill unlocking. Muwahahahaha."

Pricing for the 3g iPhone was also announced:
    • With a two-year contract, the price of an 8GB iPhone 3G will be $199; the 16GB model will be priced at $299.
    • Unlimited iPhone 3G data plans for consumers will be available for $30 a month, in addition to voice plans starting at $39.99 a month.
    • Unlimited 3G data plans for business users will be available for $45 a month, in addition to a voice plan.

Right, but you'll still be a nice 2-year contract with AT&T, which is what AT&T wants. They could care less about jailbreaking. It's unlocking what they're after.

Well, what will apple tell us now if we broke our current phones? Arent they still under warranty, and they cant just drop current warranty service becasue they came out with a new phone. What would they do if i took my current iphone to them and its broken? They cant swap it, they have been out of stock for a while, would they give me a 3G iphone?
They cant leave the current iphone users in the dark...

Am i understanding some of you wrong? Do you think the 199/299 prices are for with and with out contracts?

Its 199 for 8gb and 299 for 16gb phones with contract only.

If i'm wrong then just pass on by my post and ignore it.

I have heard that if you currently have an AT&T contract you can keep the same price data plan. You'd only be renewing your contract for 2 years... but not necessarily adding on an additional 2 years to your current contract.

I've also been told from an apple employee in Texas that for now they will require activation in AT&T AND Apple stores because AT&T employees are incompetent and provide no problem support. I was also informed that if you have ever unlocked your phone, they will know and void your warranty. You can lock it/restore it, they will find out. So beware! I want to upgrade my 8gb iphone to the 16gb white iphone, but I will now wait until the commotion dies down, and the instore activation has been lifted.

Doesnt work like that, to terminate your contract you have to return the phone

Are you sure? I believe you only have to return the device if you cancel within 30 days and you don't want to pay the termination fee.

If you really did have to return the phone, would they give you a full refund? What if it were "stolen" and you didn't want to continue the service?

"The new agreement between Apple and AT&T eliminates the revenue-sharing model under which AT&T shared a portion of monthly service revenue with Apple. Under the revised agreement, which is consistent with traditional equipment manufacturer-carrier arrangements, there is no revenue sharing and both iPhone 3G models will be offered at attractive prices to broaden the market potential and accelerate subscriber volumes. hmmm, im not sure. According to at&ts policy on the old iPhone it must be returned within 3 days for the fee to be waved or 30 in like new condition. After that your charged 175$ and you can't return the device. (I think they thought this was a good idea since at the time you couldn't unlock it)
