  • No More Online iPhone Sales | 3g Data Prices
According to dallasnews.com there will be a new requirement for buying the 3g iPhone. You must buy it in person and activate it in the store.

    Direct quote from AT&T spokesperson
When customers purchase their new 3G iPhone, customers will activate the device in the retail store. This is the traditional wireless activation model that our customers are very familiar with. In-store activation should take just a few minutes and customers will be able to leave with their iPhone up and running. This will be especially helpful if any questions or issues arise during activation.
That fluff about helping people with questions is probably just the polite way of saying "We want the iPhones activated on our chosen carriers in front of us. We hope to kill unlocking. Muwahahahaha."

Pricing for the 3g iPhone was also announced:
    • With a two-year contract, the price of an 8GB iPhone 3G will be $199; the 16GB model will be priced at $299.
    • Unlimited iPhone 3G data plans for consumers will be available for $30 a month, in addition to voice plans starting at $39.99 a month.
    • Unlimited 3G data plans for business users will be available for $45 a month, in addition to a voice plan.

The termination fee applies to extra lines as well. Youd have to pay a crazy fee for doing that

Couldnt I just take my gf into the AT&T store and have her upgrade her existing AT&T phone to the new iphone, extending her contract 2 years (which she doesnt care) and then turn around and just reactivate her old cell phone, saying the iphone was stolen? Could you also just report the iphone as stolen to your cell insurance, getting yourself an extra one for much less cash, and sell it on ebay for a price that would cover the insurance deductible AND the original price of the first subsidised iphone 3g I went in to get? not that I would ever hatch such a diabolical plan.... .. . . .

They are stating you must extend your contract 2 years, but are they stating that you must have a specific plan? I dont think so? find a friend with at&t and do it.

OR just buy it overseas. This seems like it will be the most viable option.

I don't think there's any other way to get around this issue other than buying the 3g iPhone overseas or dealing with the early termination fee.

Feasible, assuming we can hacktivate it. Also that apple doesnt hit you with those "penalties"

Remember You're not buying the phone from At&t............ So The Rules Will Be Different Anyway.
Trust Me There Are Many Ways......... Early Term Fee Don't Apply Until After 14 Days I Did It With The Current iPhone.

It does on the new one, if you cant return the new iPhone they hit you with the fee.

So what do you think is the best way to get a 3g iPhone without dealing with fee's? What if you just wanted to spend 199$ on a 4GB model and nothing more, (other than taxes) how would you do it?

Ok. I'm not really understanding this. My 2 year contract isnt up for another year. I bought my iphone this last December.Could I go into AT&T on July 11 and extend my contract and buy a new iphone for $200?

you just sign another two year contract. It doesn't add on to your current contract, it gets rid of your current contract and replaces it with a new one.

so basically you walk in, sign new contract, and are released July 11th, 2010

Ok Think About This.... You Buy The iPhone From The Apple Store You Activate it There And Then You Decide To Cancel The Service So You Call At&t To Let Them Know. They Are Not Going To Care About The Phone Because You Didn't Buy It From Them & If They Force You To Take It Back To Apple Just Fuss About The 15% Restocking Fee And I Doubt They Make You Go Threw With The Whole Early Term Mess Especially If You Have Multiple Lines.

Has there been any indication what they are going to do if someone fails a credit check? Because I used the SS# trick to get prepaid for my IPhone and am wondering if maybe they will allow people who had prepaid accounts keep them because tehy "failed" the credit check before.

The Most Important Question Should Be When Will T-Mobile Be Launching 3G Service.

Till then all of you can go back and forth with speculation, but common sense dictates otherwise...
Just because you "might" succeed in buying without a contract doesn't mean that thats not the policy. The policy will be to sign up right then and there for the 2yr contract (including Apple stores). I'm sure some knucklehead not following policy, or perhaps your friend who works at Apple, or maybe even a poorly trained rep will sell without contract.

My head is going to explode reading this and the ill-informed who continue to say that they can just buy one and go unlock it just like the last one.

ok just to get this out here as the posts are being posted faster then i can refresh and read all of them, but i came to AT&T when i bought my iPhone... i was with T-Mobile, (which sucked, and i thought it was the greatest thing on the face of the earth) till i got on AT&T and gained service in 75% more places then i did with T-Mobile... why would it be such a bad thing to switch to AT&T anyway? i mean if you want this device why not buy it and keep it with the provider it was built for?

that is true... he does have a point... so you would be buying this device and going through all the trouble to have a iPhone 3G that will be running on T-Mo's slow *** edge network anyway... what would be the point??

      it basically says:
Also interesting is the “GPS-enabled YELLOWPAGES.COM mobile application” which we didn’t see today from Apple. Take a look at the PDF & webcast of the AT&T conference call here.

Update: It looks like current customers will continue paying the standard $20/month. “All iPhone 2G users will be grandfathered and won’t be required to pay more per month for as long as they choose to use the service, including past the end of their contract.”

Oh hey you're right. I always just took the 5000 as unlimited since I never EVER got anywhere near that. Hell I barely go over 300 minutes on my 450 plan. I currently have 2730 rollover minutes :P
