  • Change Mac Address Possible Greyed Out No Wifi Fix? [Testers Wanted]

    You folks remember our news post the other day about iPhone Linux project? Well maybe you can use ibooter to fix the annoying grey wifi problem many users experience when they screw up their baseband / commboard by changing the mac address of the iPhone. iphonelinux.org just posted some instructions on how to change the mac address using ibooter. For any of you that would like to give the method a shot to fix your grey wifi instructions are as follows (use at your own risk, we ARE looking for some confirmation here):

    Download Ibooter. Connect to ibooter and type the following: ( replace xxxxxxx with any mac address )

    setenv wifiaddr "xxxxxxx"
    printenv wifiaddr
    saveenv
    fsboot
    It will look something like this:
    Entering recovery mode, starting command prompt
    ]
    ] setenv wifiaddr "01:1c:b2:1c:2b:40"
    setenv wifiaddr "01:1c:b2:1c:2b:40"

    So anyone have one of those awfull greyed out wi/fi phones around? As much as I would like to break mine to test it out it would be so much nicer for one of our wonderfull users to provide some confirmation . If you try it please post your results.

      While on OS X it required hexediting the kernal module, I thought for the iPhone this could be done with the ifconfig command in the terminal:

      "ifconfig en0 ether XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX"

      You'd prolly want to do a "ifconfig en0 down" before this command and a "ifconfig en0 up" after.

      Too late to try myself. Will do so and post results in morning if no one else has proven/disproven.

      UPDATE: Yes, this is true. Don't bring the interface down before changing the MAC address though. You have to make the change while the interface is up. But once you make the change, bring it down and then back up. I did this just now, ifconfig showed the address as changed, and when I connected to my wifi, it gave my a different IP (I'd set my router to always assign the same ip to my iphone - so this isn't just a random assignment). Doesn't survive reboot though. Also -- not at all associated with fixing gray wifi. Just a nifty trick if you want to get on your neighbor's wifi and it's being filtered by MAC address.

      ibooter for windows needed this to install "Libusbfilter 0.1.12." after installing it my sound card went dead, anything usb went dead, and i had to go crazy looking for a non usb keyboard and mouse to uninstall the stupid thing. thankfully after uninstalling everything works (except ibooter) with friends like you guys who needs enemys

      I have one iPhone without WiFi and Bluetooth Signal, unlocked and works fine, only without WiFi, i try this iBooter now.

      This is only mildly related, but could you use a similar method to change the Bluetooth MAC address? I desperately need to do that.

      sigh i went home and tried this on my home computer, it worked, as far as the commands go, but i lost edge (i had it before this it just didnt show the box) and i lost my phone service as well


      and ibooter does not see my phone

      an update, my phone keep coming up with errors telling me to bring it to at&t for service, and is really really slow now

      i gave it try, I am using vista. when I installed Libusbfilter, all my USB ports went dead. They only worked when I uninstall the driver.

      I tried the recovery driver, but the ibooter windows stays open for a split second.

      anyone have luck with this?

      i gave it a try using xp. everything went well except changing the mac addr.istill have a grey out wifi

      my usb devices also whent dead, mouse keyboard nothings works anymore, and ibooter?? don't get connected.

      It will inhabilitate you USB drivers

      I give ifconfig alone because 'en0' dont exist and send me 'lo0' so I try it. Message Operation Not Supported received.

      Need more information

      Any of the nexts points works

      1. Restart PC and give F8 or F2 until windows setup displays. From the menu select "Restart PC from previous checkpoint" or "restart from previous working version" dont remember the text exactly. This will use your last checkpoint

      2. Use a keyboard and Mouse NON-USB and unistall the Libusbfilter 0.1.12. program

      ok so i put myself into a situation where i needed this and it worked kind of i have a mac address and its not greyed out anymore but i cant hold a connection, i can connect, but once i do anything (go to a website for example) the connection drops
