  • Change Mac Address Possible Greyed Out No Wifi Fix? [Testers Wanted]
You folks remember our news post the other day about iPhone Linux project? Well maybe you can use ibooter to fix the annoying grey wifi problem many users experience when they screw up their baseband / commboard by changing the mac address of the iPhone. iphonelinux.org just posted some instructions on how to change the mac address using ibooter. For any of you that would like to give the method a shot to fix your grey wifi instructions are as follows (use at your own risk, we ARE looking for some confirmation here):

Download Ibooter. Connect to ibooter and type the following: ( replace xxxxxxx with any mac address )

    setenv wifiaddr "xxxxxxx"
    printenv wifiaddr
    saveenv
    fsboot
It will look something like this:
Entering recovery mode, starting command prompt
    ]
    ] setenv wifiaddr "01:1c:b2:1c:2b:40"
    setenv wifiaddr "01:1c:b2:1c:2b:40"
    ] printenv wifiaddr
    wifiaddr "01:1c:b2:1c:2b:40"
    ] saveenv
    saveenv
    ] fsboot
    fsboot
    HFSInitPartition: 0x1806c298
Loading kernel cache at 0xb000000...data starts at 0xb000180
    done
    gBootArgs.commandLine = [ ]
    usb_interrupt_write: No error
So anyone have one of those awfull greyed out wi/fi phones around? As much as I would like to break mine to test it out it would be so much nicer for one of our wonderfull users to provide some confirmation . If you try it please post your results.

The easiest way is to way Upgrade your firmware to a newer version. And the greyed out WiFi will be back again.

That method has not worked for a large number of people.

I didn't have any luck with this as well. My first attempt at ibooter worked with no errors but didn't do anything for my grayed out wifi, my second attempt returned an undefined error on usb read and I haven't had any luck since.

I tried it. no USB or crash issues. Changed MAC address as suggested, still to no Avail.

I lost wifi and bluetooth when I used AnySIm 1.2. I tried just about any fix I can find, still no to avail

i am playing with iLiberty+ now so far nothing.

I started to loose interest in Iphone

The dev team has just released a comprehensive WiFi fix on their website, give that a shot. It is more thorough than previous methods.

While i was already really getting tired of trying stuff, and just about to buy a flex cable antena i tried this....

The first time I changed the MAC address to the example in the ibooter page, after the process was finished I was able to locate the networks around me!! but i wasnt able to connect, so i tought "maybe my original address is the correct, and by reassigning it Im going to be able to connect"
After trying this last thing twice, the Wifi started working, im testing it....

The oringial problem was sometimes i got greyed out wifi and sometimes it was getting stucked while searching...

Im still using 1.1.4 hoping that after some days i get it working, if someone get the same results than me, and then update it...let me know.!!

      NEW METHOD

Hi there, i just got lucky, hope my experience can help you...

Wifi Issues in iPhones/Ipods are 95% software issues, I dont think your problem is a hardware issue, except if you drop, or damage your phone/ipod physicaly....

I started with a 2.2.1 iphone..(Some times gray WIFI, sometimes just couldnt find any networks...

First, In windows I installed iTunes 7.5, put the iphone in DFU and installed 1.1.4 normal firmware, the apple official one. I got error 1015, and the iphone in rcovery mode ...Then restored again, and got recovery mode again, then use iLiberty+ just to boot it out of recovery mode

Then downgraded the baseband with this ----http://www.4shared.com/file/56120252/5bab78e9/En_ZiPhone_patched_by_kIREmK_040504_G.html----

activate and jailbreak with iLiberty+ again.)NO UNLOCK

      Now you have a 1.1.4, 04.04.05 baseband.
Now, using iliberty+ erase the 3.6 Baseband, you should get not even a wifi mac address in settings about.
      restore to official 1.1.4
Jailbreak and activate again in iliberty.
Use Winpwn 2.0, to pwn the device, select the 1.1.4 firmware, put the iphone in recovery mode and watch all the codes pass through your screen.
Now you have the same phone, just pwned..
Create a custom firmware in PWN, if you want unlocked
Now in normal mode in itunes 7.5, restore using the custom firmware.
Now you have a custom firmwared iphone.
Your wifi should be working by now in 1.1.4
Uodate to a 2.X custom firmware using itunes 8.0.2... You should be having the same great wifi behavior.
