  • Receive MMS on the iPhone

SwirlySpace, the guys who brought us the MMS app back in December, have updated to version 0.3, which now lets you receive MMS!

This is "very rough" according to them, but a new version will be released soon after which will be much more polished. The good news is - it works. MMS receiving on the iPhone! It should appear on Installer within 24 hours.

    http://blog.swirlyspace.com/

You can add this from Swirly's source until Ste gets it up - swirlyspace.com/SwirlySpace.xml and add version 0.3.2.

A list of carrier settings can be found here.

T-Mobile USA's settings are (thanks, insomniaparatus):

    T-Mobile (USA)
    MMSC: 216.155.174.84/servlets/mms
    Proxy: 216.155.165.50:8080

yep, then that confirms what I said earlier. Gotta have the unlimited text plans now instead of the ppu .25 mms plan.

Ok just so we are all on the same page you are talking about the plans here (ATT txt/data plans) correct:

      - messaging unlimited
      or
      - messaging unlimited for families

as the plans on this page are the only ones that get mms, the iphone txt plans do not

@pegaweng: you don't get the "fetch" button until someone sends you an mms and swirlymms notifies you that you have recieved an mms to fetch.

So i get rid of the unlimited iphone text plan and add the unlimited family text plan, right? What's the price difference in the two?

The unlimited iphone text plan is 40/mo. That includes the unlimited iPhone data plan and unlimited texting.

The basic plan that I am on is 20/mo. That includes the unlimited data plan for iPhones and 200 text messages. I ALSO signed up for the messaging unlimited for families which is 30/mo. EXTRA. My wife has an iPhone so I did the family plan. Having said that it breaks down like this:

      my iPhone: 20/mo.
      her iPhone: 20/mo.
      family txt plan: 30/mo.
      ==================
70/mo. for unlimited data, txt, mms, etc. for both our phones.

If you are one person and you are already paying 40/mo. for the unlimited txt iPhone plan then go down to the 20/mo. unlimited data/200txt and add the messaging unlimited plan for 20/mo. extra. It's the same exact price only it allows you to have mms

So.. the unlimited plan is $20, not $30. So it adds up the the exact same amount, just two plans instead of one. Gotcha. I'll have to go and try to get that changed soon. Do they question at all why you're changing from 1 plan to 2 for the same exact thing? Just wanna know what i need to tell them, if anything. lol.

Edit: one last thing.. what are the names of the three plans (one $40 i'm on now, and the two $20 ones i'll need to switch to)

Thanks for the info burtthaman. I am on official O2 and when I am sent an MMS i only get a text from O2. I do not seem to get notification from swirlyMMS at all? Is there a pref I need to set in swirly to make that work?

I am competent in cli if thats how it is done.

      thanks again for your reply....

The step that everyone seemed to skip over as it was explained to me through various blogs, and other random google searching....Someone said it before but no one really went that worked for me.......You must have mobile finder and mobile Preview in order to see the picture!!!!!(or atleast for me to see the picture i needed these two things)

Thank you so so so so much dude! One more thing.. on your guide you can click the link to view the plans.. it doesn't have the iPhone listed as compatible on the "Messaging Unlimited" plan.. so if you do get that plan, are you 100% sure that anything past the iPhone 200 text plan won't count as overage on that plan as long as you have the Messaging Unlimited plan? (I hope it makes sense how i asked it, lol)

Well bad news for o2: retrieving mms a no-go on o2

you may be able to call O2 and tell them to stop sending the text confirmation. Tell them you have an mms enabled phone. (perhaps 2 dif. phones) Or I wonder if doing the fake phone thing would work? Click on that link and see what you think. Perhaps if o2 thinks you have an mms capable phone it will send the mms instead of the text.

@cockyjeremy: yes i'm sure. it gives you unlimited txt, mms, etc. they confirm that you realize its a charge on top of the iPhone data plan and you say yes and they add it. AT&T wants to make money in the end.. they don't care if you are making a "bad decision." Just gotta find the right person to let you make that bad decision I guess lol.

make sure you type the ending with the 2 capital letters....

      swirlyspace.com/SwirlySpace.xml

I did all lowercase the first time and refreshed and it said.."unknown source" and was not in the install lists....after i put the caps in and refreshed the sources it said "swirlyspace" source and was in the install list

Don't know if this has been mentioned, I really don't want to read through 30 pages of a slow server to find out.

MMS will not stay activated on PPU plan if you are a legit AT&T customer. Every 24-48 hours the server will do a sweep, if you have a PPU plan on a single phone iphone package it will remove the PPU option.

I've had PPU added twice, each time the messaging worked with both sending and recieving like a charm but the next day it won't work.

You have to get the unlimited text plan as mentioned.

      Viewing MMS

How do you view MMS? I have finder and can get the MMS Files folder but it only shows a small picture? Any thing to do?
