Few things are as exciting in my book as a report card from iSmash.

iSmash is out this weekend with a head to head comparison of the 5 most popular iPhone turn-by-turn navigation apps.

And their findings are interesting, although rabid supporters of each app are likely to find argument with some of the grades given.

But for now, the winner is... TomTom

According to iSmash, TomTom gets the highest grade with a respectable B+

Then again, how could it not be the winner? The TomTom app arguably emulates the top GPS navigation units with its turn-by-turn directions, voice instructions, touch-screen commands, a choice of 2D or 3D mapping, day/night screen choices and, of course, full coverage of the U.S. and Canada.

    From iSmash:
TomTom is the leader of the GPS world, and there's a reason. They make a good product, and that didn't change for their iPhone app. The app works great. Just like their portable devices, the map itself looks ugly...with a thick red line over a beige background, and occasionally some jagged edges. But quite frankly, it's not there to be modeled, it's there to guide you and give you functionality. That it does.
There are still plenty of reasons, however, why we don't see any grades above the B range. Too many iPhone navigation apps need to work on a major issue that I have with them - an incoming phone call will close your nav app and go to your phone app. And this usually happens at a critical moment when you really need those directions.

    Been there. Done that.

Yet until the Apple makes the iPhone more multitasking-friendly, navigation apps can't be what we all want them to be - perfect.

Other apps graded include: Navigon MobileNavigator, AT&T Navigator, CoPilot Live North America, Sygic Mobile Map US.

You can check out their respective grades and weigh in on the analysis by visiting iSmash.com

Another thing i hate having the music stopped everytime a voice direction comes in, navigon deals with this very nicely.

Plus with the new navigon update submitted with text to speech, 3d street names, route planning, and much better ipod control. Flickr: NAVIGON_'s Photostream

This will be the best nav app bar none when the update gets approved.
I agree with you 100% tomtom gives me all kinds of wacky late directions and the arrow always loses its place...navigon is always on point and tells me ahead of time where to turn instead of the last second like tomtom does..

Actually this is a cradle manufactured by Arkon, which I bought right after G-Map U.S. East was first released. This is an ESSENTIAL for ANY satnav app to work properly. It can be found here: arkon.com/iPhone_Car_Mount.php

I wish you didn't have to take your case off to use this car mount! What about the charger cord? I have one but not long enough...

The best part of these threads are people ousting themselves as pirates when they can throw opinions of more than one of these apps. My favorite term is when people "try" apps.

Unless they have a lot of money to burn...

Stealthy's got wayyy too much money to burn.
But he's too selfish to share with me

I think i already explained how I got to try Sygic AND navigon.. but just those two. I think I have to go find someone with TomTom now.

navigon got europe tom tom only got west europe as far as i could see in the app store.

for that reason alone navigon is better.
besides if you ask me this whole grading thing is a marketing way to get tom tom out there since they are late and all i wonder howmuch they paid for that b+

Navigon is the BEST... I had to buy it after I tried it.

      I love this line.
      -Loading Time
"Excellent, Sprint Network is main benefit here"
"Poor, AT&T network is to blame here"

Almost seems as if they we're targeted against each other.

I'm pretty sure Telenav provides the services for both networks..

The TomTom app is a rehash of the older V6. When I first purchased TomTom it was version 6 and my unit would never recognise my contacts (always came up with "cannot recognise address, do you want to enter manually?". Newer TomTom's (V7 & V8) fixed this problem. I love my latest TomTom unit and am a big fan of their program (I have tried Garmin and IGO), but when they (TomTom) just regurgitated the old program with all it's faults, and then added what is not even the latest map file for $100.00 I felt they dropped the ball.

NAvigon is definitely the best on the market. I was really looking forward to iGo My Way but unfortunately they used AmiGo to develop from instead of the real iGo. Navigon is the only one I come across so far that actually keeps up with the current position. I can only assume the iPhone GPS causes the lag on the others but Navigon seems to work around it. There's a few bits of navigon I'd like them to fix, like some of the POIs and the route details but it's still my SatNav of choice.
