  • GeoHotz says R.I.P Purplesn0w and purplera1n

GeoHotz announced yesterday that he will not be updating the Purplesn0w and purplera1n tools for OS 3.0.1. In fact, he won't be updating them at all. One reason - the DevTeam tools already work. He also mentions that the tools were merely a proof of concept, trying to show better and much more painless jailbreak methods exist than the DevTeam's, which he claims to be "complex"!

I code to make things simple, hacky, and fast. Dev codes to make things proper, slow, and complicated; redsn0w works OOTB. [...] Someone enterprising out there could probably fix it, it's just the kernel patches that are in the wrong place. Exploit and 99% of payload will work fine. But otherwise, purplera1n RIP.
GeoHotz says those willing can customize his patches to work on the new firmware with a minimum amount of changes, as most of the payload works - it's just a matter of changing the spot where the tool tackles in the kernel. Although... hey, what's wrong with proper? Can't he do simple, proper, and fast?

If I do another tool release, it'll hit the ipt3 and ra1nydayless 3GS. Told you I had more holes.
Finally, he ends the blog on a good note having said that he may still do work for the iPhone / iPod Touch community and will be releasing some nice solution once the iPod Touch 3 is out, as he claims to to have some more holes...

meh, you couldve smelled this coming a mile away. much can be said on this guys history of arrogance, ego and lack of judgment but there's clearly no use in stating anything here. his cheerleaders would pom-pom you to death.

as for the devteams method being 'proper, slow and complicated'...id substitute 'thorough' in.

in the story of the turtle and the hare race, geo played the part of the hare to perfection. good show.

on another note.. i wouldnt be surprised if apple didnt finally put a good chokehold on the iphone with 3.1 .

That's really frustrating. I was hoping he'd do something being as I'm at pull out hair stage trying to get Redsn0w to work with 3.0.1 for like the 30th time on 4 different computers!

I like Geohotz method better because everything works like push notification were as with the Dev-Team you have to get a fix to make it work. I'm a Geohotz fan

      nothing is.
There is nothing wrong with it for the avid iPhone jailbreaker... but to newbies, nothing beats a simple solitary tap of a button!

You have to admit, that if you were given the choice of downloading and running one app(purplera1n), and simply plugging in your iPhone, then pressing ONE button... it reboots itself and it is done in about 2 mins or less.

      OR

Downloading redsn0w... download the 3.9 and 4.6 bootloader... then download the ipsw file... plug in your iPhone, run redsnow... point the app to the ipsw file... now select the jailbreak items... now put your iPhone into DFU manually and wait for a couple mins wondering if you did it correctly... which requires aside from the time locating and downloading all the additinal required files, it takes about 5 mins or more to complete the process...

Granted both work without problems... which one would you pick?

Purplera1n would be the winner hands down.

look at it another way... if you had to jailbreak lets say 15 iPhones in a row... what method would you want to use?

Both teams are amazing.. but I cant deny that purplera1n was a more attractive solution for me.

Come on man! It's more like this.
-you already updated through iTunes, Ipsw is in the computer already
-download redsnow (and basebands if you want to unlock) takes less than a minute.
-run it next next, sleep/wake+home 5 secs, home 10 secs. Let go redsnow does it's thing.
-wait about two minutes and done.

You said for speedier jailbreak ok purplera1n but my argumt was that redsn0w is not as difficult as people make it to be.

And to that guy who said you tried for the 30th time with three different computers...Really? Lol Really?

Honestly, if you're having a hard time pressing the only significant button on the iPhone and want to blame dev team because of that...you shouldn't even be discussing jailbreaks here...You should be improving your motor skills and hand-eye co-ordination.
People who say dev-team make crappy software in comparison are truly ridculous; even on the superficial level that most of us look at JB at you can still see that's absurd. Some of you follow the mac ethic with such endearment- a part of that ethic is "don't waste your time with updates": but yet you cheer on when you get- Purplera1n RC1 and RC2 within DAYS of each other, just to get it to run properly on certain OS's. Even after these updates- Purplera1n works ONLY on 3GS on 3.0 (then again this is what you get from the very best in jailbreaking ()).
Version 0.8 not (0.8.1 or 0.8b) of Redsn0w works on multiple devices on firmware up to 3.0.1. this suits me because I regularly jailbreak all the touch devices.
Jailbreaking is meant to be fun but it's also an unofficial thing- it's time to stop begging for it to be spoonfed to you- the more you do by yourself, however little, the more you learn and the more independent you'll become. Be prepared to press two buttons at once. Be prepared to unplug a USB cable (why this is even a factor in why you choose a jailbreak is extremely depressing; ^^^^ HELLOOOO, BUMP).
I do wish some of you just look back to 2007 and see how much initiatve had to be taken to get the same job done. Just apply some of that initiative now and see how much further you'll get.

CDwardell. Hackitavation and unlocking ruins push on a phone, not the jailbreak.

Too bad that Mercedes is made by Chrysler...which in turn is made sloppy these days. Most Mercedes owners complain their cars spend more time in the shop rather than on the road. So I guess your analogy Does work! Dev product owners spend most their time with their phones in the "shop" as well...

Mercedes made by chrysler? dear oh dear...

thats like saying bugatti/lamborghini/porsche are made by Skoda.

Push notifications worked and still work for my Dev-Team JB & Unlock 3Gs

I agree Geohotz purplerain was simpler and quicker for the end-user, although not having Cydia automatically and then having to get rid of that 'freeze' app was annoying.
But its what happens underneath the simple GUI thats important, and I would trust a group of people co-operating on a piece of software over just one guy doing it "as a proof of concept".

You point out that GeoHot claims that the DevTeam jailbreak is complex. Well, compared to his answer, it really is. It is a shame that he won't be keeping up with it. I do prefer his method a thousand times over the devteam one. No need for custom .ipsw's... the way it should be.
