  • Apple Releases 3.0.1 Update! SMS Hack Fixed!

REMEMBER DO NOT UPDATE IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR JAILBREAK AND UNLOCK!

Update 1: We have confirmed that 3.0.1 breaks the current jailbreaks . . . well at least the 3GS.
Update 2: Looks like using a 3.0 firmware .ipsw with redsn0w to jailbreak 3.0.1 works. Purplera1n failed. This might be unlockable with ultrasn0w as well (we don't know if the baseband has been updated yet, all testing has been done on 2xiPhone 3GS with the 3.1 baseband).
Update 3: As far as we can tell all the jailbreak stuff is working fine (including winterboard) still don't know if the baseband was updated or not though thx jomasta
Update 4: I was just told that the baseband is the same meaning ultrasn0w should* work (iPhone 3G and 3GS). Can't confirm so try at your own risk. Anyone feeling like testing? edit: confirmed working.
Update 5: To clear up any confusion. iPhone 2G users should* be safe to upgrade and then jailbreak/unlock via redsn0w vusing a 3.0 frimware file. We just haven't confirmed unlocking for the iPhone 3G and 3GS yet.
Update 6: MMi user paige lets us know you can easily jailbreak 3.0.1 right now while waiting for an official tool - just restore the 3.0.1 firmware, and then using redsn0w 0.8, select the 3.0 IPSW, not the 3.0.1! After this, redsn0w will do it's magic and you'll be jailbroken on 3.0.1. edit: BTW this method has now been dev team approved.

    Download links for 3.0.1:
    iPhone 3GS
    iPhone 3G
    iPhone 2G

Download links for 3.0 (needed to jailbreak 3.0.1 via redsn0w):
    iPhone 3GS
    iPhone 3G
    iPhone 2G

All that this update appears to do is fix the SMS vulnerability that we reported on a couple of days ago. The release notes are very very vague so we can't really provide more information until we install it ourselves and poke around, which we will do asap and either update this post or make a new one edit: updates above

    Release notes:
    iPhone OS 3.0.1 Software Update

Products compatible with this software update:
    iPhone
    iPhone 3G
    iPhone 3GS

btw. mad props to MMi member LatinKreationz for being super fast on the uptake posting about the update only 2 short minutes after it was released. It let us get a post on the homepage super quick (which I have now stolen and edited )

What OS are you on? Can you see the file with a .zip extension or is it that when you double click on it it tries to unzip?

If you are on a mac the original .zip is in your trash

If you are on vista you have to go to Folder Options (under Organize/Windows Explorer), and untick "hide extension for known type" under the "view" tab. Only then you can rename the .zip to .ipsw.

      Advice:
Stop using Internet Explorer for browsing, it is a really awful browser, it downloads .zip instead of .ipsw for some odd reason :P move firefox or something better.

Haha. That's why I just tell everyone not to upgrade until I tell them to.

I upgraded, nothing negative from my end, everything works, openssh needs to be installed twice for some odd reason. I am happy now, was having weird problems with my sms app, old deleted sms's were poping up time to time from no where. :S

I have updated it with 3.0.1 from apple and then when I use redsnow I point it to the old 3.0. I then put it in DFU mode but it wont go passed the waiting for reboot. PLease help

I keep telling people, to unplug it from the computer, then re plug in to computer. That should make it reboot and work. Can someone confirm this works please.

The main cause of waiting for reboot hangs is using the wrong ipsw for the device. If you are 100% certain you have the right one (they have very similar names so if in doubt, ask) then unplugging the cable at the computer (not the phone end) and plugging it back in again should solve the problem.

Noticed my battery is draining out extremely quickly though. Yes i know all the options which i need to keep off to keep the battery lasting longer, but my 2day run time has come down to 1 if not half a day!!!!!! redsn0w to blame?

I have jailbroken twice now since the 3.0.1 update but I am still having an annoying issue.

First of all, I used to be on AT&T and I closed my account. I am still contemplating which new carrier to go through but I think I will settle on t-mobile this week.

I did a restore to 3.0 to clear my phone. Upgraded to 3.0.1 via iTunes. Selected "new phone", to avoid the battery problem I heard of, and loaded my backup on for all of my contacts et cetera. Jailbroke the phone using redsn0w .8 and the 3.0 IPSW. Everything is functional. However, I am receiving the following message after respringing et cetera...

      "Waiting for activation
      This may take some time."

I looked into it and tried letting iTunes activate after selecting new phone again but it went nowhere. Is this just because I canceled my service? If I do an unlock now (before getting t-mobile even) will this message finally go away? Although I have been reading horror stories of people using ultrasn0w .91-1 and it's screwing with people's service left right and center. I intend on upgrading my girlfriend's iPhone as well and she is on China Mobile. I can live without a phone for a few days but I know she could not afford to with some of her work and all. I simply dislike leaving it as is with her phone exploitable...

      I appreciate the help

      Forget what I said...
This is the phone searching for a signal. Since you have no active sim card in your phone it just keeps looking and looking. This will stop when you put any sim card in that has service

      Thanks Melech.

I guess my only concern now is waiting for the dev team on ultrasn0w to figure out what's wrong. .9 worked perfectly fine for my girlfriends iPhone but it's no longer on Cydia now -_-;... and their newest one is just giving everyone grief it seems.

UltraSn0w 0.91-1 works for 99.9% of people the people with problems are a very, very small minority.

Yep- the unplug/re-plug got my reboot to start.

Finished reinstalling/re-syncing. Everything seems to be working fine. This really was easy as pie.

      Thanks to all who contributed.

hey guys...i have two 3g phones, mine and my gfs...anyways i updated, rejailbroke and unlocked mine without issue using an unactivated att sim without issue...but i'm having some trouble with my gfs phone...i took me three restores/jbs to get the "activation" message from att sim...after i got it all working i keep getting some "cannot to connect to itunes error" saying it can't connect to the phone, don't remember the error code off hand...and the phone went thru a 100% battery in the matter of 8 hours standby, no usuage...i watched it go down 4% in like 10 mins....my question is, could it be maybe ipsw related? i used the same exact files when i did my phone and nothings wrong with mine at all...she's never had this problem with her phone before...only after we updated it the 3.0.1...any suggestions?
