  • Confusing iPhone Nano Patent

Straight via Australian filling, a US Patent filling for what looks like an iPhone Nano via Apple emerged recently on the USPTO directory.

The patent shows the iPhone Nano as a small device with screens on both sides. One side is shown as just a touch screen display similar to the iPhone today with menus for all the basic features including phone, text messaging, iPod, camera mode, etc etc etc.

The flip side however is where things get different. The patent shows it is a "force-sensitive touch-surface." This surface would control a click wheel like everyone is used to one the iPod of today. Somehow you control the screen side of the iPhone Nano via the controls on the back blind. Maybe the force-sensitive touch-surface has some etchings back there so you can feel your way around -- or something. There are also images of keys and whatnot being on the surface, specifically something that resembles a dialer pad.

The patent isn't exactly clear on how this whole thing will enhance usability, but if Apple can and decides to pull it off it probably won't be anything short of revolutionary. I'm not sure any of this is ever going to make the light of day since it all appears to be more confusing than functional. At least we get to have more iPhone Nano rumors for years to come

The reason for the touch screen being on the "wrong" side is that it is hard enough for those of us with fat fingures to figure out what we are clicking on right now. A smaller screen and I would hit a lot of real estate with a tap. Move the sensor to the back and you virtually tap on the screen. With a little intelligent programing I could "see" what I am going to click on...

Yeah, I know right? I hate txt'ing on my iPhone unless the case is on because it just doesn't seem to fit in my hand right without it and I end up messing stuff up more then actually getting a message out.

I think what he meant to say is that they might be including an ear piece and a mic like what's on the iPhone. I think thats a decent idea.

weird...how they would "try" to make an iPod an iPhone with all features, considering its size and layout...it could definately get hot very quick &/or weigh alot...

Does anybody remember that horrible phone that was released a few years back that had the dialer on one side with a small screen and on the other was a larger screen and menu interface?? I think samsung made it. I recall it being garbage and cumbersome to have to flip the phone over any time you wanted to change tasks. Dont do it apple.

Haha imagine having your phone telling you every single thing you do like the shuffle does today. Say you wanna make a call, so your phone has to tell you the name of every single contact you have until you finally reach the person you wanted to call. Sucks for you if your best friend that you call every night is named Zeke. And how in the world would texting work?? hahaha

For the record, in "big business", sometimes patents are deterrants rather than something you will develop yourself. So, if I own a patent the competition will be more reluctant to invest money in developing a product for which they will also have to dedicate monies to fight in court as well.
There are many patents for "flying saucer" type vehicles, just not many of those around. LOL

I personally dont believe there well ever be a iPhone Nano...

Think of how annoying that would be to even use.

Maybe it wouldn't even be that easy, maybe it would need to shuffle randomly through your contacts before you find the one you want?
