  • Next iPhone July 17th, Rubber Back, OLED Screen, More?
Now that everything here at MMi is running again back to the news

If appadvice's source can be believed the next-gen iPhone will be available for purchase on July 17th. There will be major hardware updates across the board as well. Can't tell if this information is real or not as the most of what is mentioned is either common sense or rumors we have already seen and many are doubtful at best. The report, however, does include some new rumors! Your next iPhone could have all of the following:
    • 32GB and 16GB to replace current capacities
This is a basic upgrade that one would expect with a new Apple product.

    • $199 and $299 price-points to be maintained
Also expected, subsidization makes the iPhone fairly affordable, helps Apple sell product, take over your life, the world . . .

    • 3.2 Megapixel camera
      As rumored here.

    • Video recording & editing capabilities
As rumored here. Found in Firmware 3.0 here.

    • Ability to send a picture & video via MMS
MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service. Self explanatory and we already know it's coming due to 3.0 firmware.

    • Discontinuation of the metal band surrounding the edge of the device
      This is new rumor/information.

    • OLED screen
      As rumored here, here.

    • 1.5X The battery life
This is new rumor/information. It would be great if the battery life was improved. My current 3g requires its nightly charge.

    • Double the RAM and processing power
New. Apps would run better. Sorry underpowered pre . . .

    • Built-in FM transmitter
      As rumored here.

    • Apple logo on the back to light up
Now wouldn't that be cool? Light up Apple AND better battery life? Doubtful at best . . .

    • Rubber-tread backing
“Similar to the back of a blackberry.” If I wanted a rubber blackberry I would buy one -- wish they would go back to metal . . .

    • Sleeker design
How? That can mean almost anything.

    • Built-in compass
      As rumored here.

    • Revolutionary combination of the camera, GPS, compass, and Google maps to identify photo and inform about photo locations.
According to the source this is going to be some super information slammed into the palm of your hand feature. Take a picture and the iPhone will use GPS, compass, etc to tell you everything it possibly can about what you just took a picture of using sources like Wikipedia. Hard to believe that this is on its way in a couple months - it took Apple two years to figure out copy/paste.

    • Turn by turn directions
      As revealed here.

    • July 17th, 2009 release date
A Friday mid July. Just like the last two years of "iPhone Day"

    thx for the tip stocis

Turn-by-turn navigation would probably be much more improved in the new iPhone, would it not? (Since this has the compass) As opposed to the 3G, which tends to keep going straight for a few seconds in the map after you make a turn.

Looks pretty promising. Hopefully they won't have ridiculous prices for those who aren't eligible for an upgrade yet. I would definitely upgrade for the 32GB as I think it's the sweet spot for portable devices.

As long as your a previous iPhone owner I am sure that they will let you purchase the new one at the subsidized price even if you arent eligible for the upgrade. It would be only fair.

You couldn't purchase the 3g with subsidized pricing when they came out if you had just bought the iPhone a year before.....They just let you out of your 2 year contract a year early so you could buy it and sign a new 2 year but still had to pay the extra $$ un-subsidized.

tune your radio to fm station 88.1

set ur iphone to transmit the headphone out to the fm transmitter at 88.1 frequency.

they wouldn't even have to change anything else,

Fair? What would make it fair?

Do I get a steep discount on a 2010 car because I bought the 2009 model?

For what it's worth, my upgrade option on AT&T is to buy the new iPhone at a discounted price, but not the full subsidized discounted price. So I'm probably looking at $499 for a 32G model.

Sounds fantastic but I do certainly agree, bring back the metal back. Why would I want rubber? It just grips your pocket and makes it hard to get in and out. Anyone who bought one of those iPhone skins would know. And I couldn't agree more on the photo technology takin less than two years. Good joke.

LOL....why u guys trippin over a rumored rubber back? The chances are....you're not even going to be able to see it anyway with an aftermarket case on it. Like it's going to make a difference when you can't see it?

I use 87.8 or 87.9 and get better sound quality with my Itrip Autopilot. I had to switch the default settings on the transmitter to Japanese stations though to be able to broadcast lower than 88.1.

As long as they're around $500 I will probably just save up. I'm dying for a 32GB iPhone.

You missed the point of the article entirely. They are saying that the new Iphone itself may have a built in FM radio. Not the ability to transmit TO a radio.

Many cellphones have built in FM radios...

It's to bad that Apple didn't think of a front camera for video calling like iChat in the next iPhone. Looks like were going to have to wait for that in the "iPhone 4G".
