  • First Push Notification app from Apple! Push Notification Menu enabled!
Developers received an email from Apple inviting me to try out the first push notification application this afternoon as reported by sayam.

The Associated Press app is very well done and the push notification is very good addition to the news alert app. When you first launch the app it give you a setup menu and a pop up, requesting permissions to use push notifications appears.

After the installation of the A/P app, we finally see the notifications tab enabled in the settings app.

    Push Notification is here!

    Enjoy!

Apple sent promo codes for the app, so unless you are a dev you won't get it legitimately

Push is like Good Pop Ups! :-)

It allows applications to communicate as needed from outside servers....

Think Instant Message (Pop-Up) for every program for any need... Instead of just the red badge notification you can get a message.

Though it's written for different frameworks, do you know if anyone has copied it and made it available for 2.2.1 users?

there´s no good pop ups! i can´t believe Apple will keep the notification system as it is (retarded), with all the possibilities push alows

i just think about the pop up nightmare...sms - pop up...calendar pop up...20 push notification apps - pop up...just stupid...and the badges or sounds are NOT enough for replacement

God, i just hope someone figures how to use GriP effctively to handle this stuff...this is the thing were the iphone look seriously outdated compared with Android or the Palm Pre

No good Pop Ups... Are you sure?

Do you use an Instant Messenger? Do you want to just sit with you iphone on this App and wait until you recieve a message, while doing NOTHING else... I don't think you'd like that.

Lets say you're on youtube and its a longer video, you could close the app and get a pop-up letting you know that the video is ready for viewing... Wouldn't that be helpful?

Tell me your favorite APP, and i could tell you a GOOD POP-UP for it.

      FYI - GriP is a POP-UP service!

Also... Everything is elective you can choose whether or not you want to be notified. They aren't changing it, they are adding it. It won't bother you, if you don't let it.

GriP does not popup in THE MIDDLE of the freakin screen! And you can configure the way to interact with it! The iphone notifications system is completely primitive...

Let´s say you choose to use badges...how many pages of apps will you have to check to see if you have new notifications for each one??? And when did the notificatations arrive?? Slowly open, app by app, to know. To have any idea of the content...you also have to open, app by app(no quickview)

GriP is a lesser bad system...with great potential...but please DO compare with the way WebOS (Palm) and Android deal with notifications...or even symbian...and see how retarded the iphone system is...

This is, IMO, the single BIGGEST letdown of an otherwise decent update (3.0)...thank God for jailbreaking

Btw, this was writen at engadget after 3.0 was announced:
A big problem that Apple has yet to address with OS 3.0 is its obnoxious, obtrusive notifications. Where Android and webOS slide a handy “tray” into view to let you know you’ve got something incoming, the iPhone regularly piles on one notice after another, leaving you with a stacked, productivity-stalling, ugly mess of pop-ups. Apple, you kill this kind of annoying garbage in your browser — why do you think users want it in their phone? Even older systems get this one more right than Apple does — both Windows Mobile and the BlackBerry OS use a mixture of pop-ups and background notifications. It’s perplexing that a company so concerned with usability and simplicity has done nothing to address the situation in three iterations of its software.
      I rest my case

No matter WHERE you put a POP-Up, its still a POP-UP! Think about it... I wouldn't lie to you...

As i stated previously, you can choose to enable what Apps have Notification access. Its only as intrusive as you want it to be. Do you own a Mac? Do you use Growl? Growl, (the core design of GriP) allows you to decide what apps you'd like to give that type of control to.

We both love the iPhone thats why we're on THIS Forum, right? WebOS and Android came after its release if i recall correctly, and they still have a dozen flaws of their own. Every MobileOS requires updating and fine tuning, to expect something perfected on its initial release is naive.

I'm still waiting on you to tell me your favorite APP...

Before this posting, no one had even been using the PUSH notification feature. As stated at the top of this thread, this is the "FIRST PUSH NOTIFICATION APP". IMO, Engadget's opinion is premature, and is also by no means the "Law of the Land"

You make a weak case my friend, don't let it rest on that... I'm looking forward to a few more arguable points. :-)

I would have to agree that GRIP is just a lavish pop-up, but I ALSO agree that push notifications, are a bit weak for "the best phone in the world."
YES, Thank God for jailbreaking, BECAUSE it gives us "little guys" the chance "use AND help tweak" apps like GRIP.

APPLE may not provide us with real notifications..... YET, but give them time.
-AND, in the meanwhile, lets work with what we got.

P.S. a FANBOY is a diehard fan of a particular thing. In this case APPLE,
AND YES, WE ARE ALL FANBOYS. IF WE WERNT, WE WOULDN'T BE ON THIS WEBSITE.

      ^^^ agreed^^^

I would love backgrounding with the option of pop-ups on certain apps but we haven't quite gotten there yet... Well not until the official 3.0 release and Jailbreak + Backgrounder. :-)

      and i guess I am a fanboy then, i can accept that.lol

i can't wait for backgrounder to come to 3.0 and also itypefastr and irealquicksms(miss the text from anywhere). also i think having push is better than nothing. without backgrounder, i have to leave my im app on all the time and when i leave, i miss messages... sux.
