  • iPhone OS 3.0 - MMS, Copy/Paste, Turn-by-Turn, and much more Summer '09

So it looks like the new OS for the iPhone will be showcased on March 17. Note, this doesn't mean it will be RELEASED next week. As to what the OS will bring, who knows but if it doesn't have push notifications I will be a very, very angry individual.

Sweet. Hope the dev team is ready for this. Jailbreaking from 1.x to 2.x took about a month. As for feature prediction goes...

      - doubt flash
      - doubt themes
      - doubt tethering
      - possible more bluetooth profiles
      - possibly copy/paste
      - possibly better integration with iphoto (face tag/recognition on device)
      - possible MMS
      - possible HTML5
      - possible file system / folders (to organize apps)

Wow didn't expect an official announcement of a new software until later this year. There's a lot of exciting stuff that Apple has probably been working on behind closed doors. They've been really quiet about a lot of issues / concerns people have had. I wont if they're also going to try and include a lot of things that they "ban" from the app store.

Maybe Apple has been planning to release some things, and didn't want people doing it first (Push, backgrounding, copy/paste, turn-by-turn, voice dialing, bluetooth audio/data functionality).

I'm trying not to get my hopes too high though, Apple has definitely disappointed in the past. But stuff like that would almost make up for their overbearing tenancies to sue anything that moves.

      From Cydia:

      Backgrounder

Clippy and hClipcoard (copy & paste implementations)

xGPS 1.2 beta (voice turn-by-turn navigation)

iBluetooth (file transfer via bluetooth - haven't tested it yet, though)

I'd like to say that I'm excited for the update, but in reality it will probably just be a disappointment. I don't think anything will ever be un-jailbreakable...actually I haven't upgraded to 2.2.1 yet...

I did not see this coming so soon. It was literally the furthest thing from my mind. Will our 3g's be in adequate with the os?

      I am excited though!
      +1

Heh, I missed the 2.0 release because I was on an Outward Bound Expedition (basically had no contact to the outside world for a month), and when I came back, literally maybe 2 days later they were like 'WE'VE FINALLY JAILBRAKED IT " and I was thinking, huh.. guess I missed all the waiting stuff lol.

Excited to see the new features. MMS, Copy-Paste, and maybe a way to switch apps quickly would be great!

Good point. This is just the announcement of what's to come so it probably won't actually even debut for a while.

Well, ya I'm thrilled and all they are announcing this "3.0" OS but in the past they have left me down many times. It's sort of like getting cheated on over and over and continue dating looking like a hopeless loser thinking the next one is going to be the one to marry.

Yes, but it's a hundred times better when Apple does it themselves. It's such a pain dealing with all the hack job apps. All these different sms apps do different crap, conflict with eachother, and cost money. It will be a huge relief when the default sms app finally does everything we want it to. Same goes for the copy/paste apps, etc. None of these beat Apple's annoying asses finally implementing it themselves.

don't get your hopes up, we'll get a few new features but not the whole shebang that we all want. I.E. cut past, proper bluetooth functionality, MMS, multi tasking etc etc,

I think one of the major features of 3.0 will be support for multi-core processing (nexgen iPhone)

      It is strange though that Apple is giving such an early preview of 3.0 when earlier promises of push notification have yet been implemented, not that the early preview is a bad thing :}

I'm really hoping/dreaming for ability to customize (themes and such)..

MMS, USB connection and Bluetooth tethering confirmed according to iClarified.

This news didn't even make me happy, I got my A2 results today and I failed Physics and Chemistry . Got A in Maths though

No more buying iPhones, gotta stick with 2G.

MMS,C&P, and finally fully functional bluetooth ARE all on the iPhone now, you just need to jailbreak it to get them

Jailbreaking adds alot more functionality to our phones but nothing is better than when Apple does it officailly. I use MySMS as my default SMS app and its ok. Its still missing somethings and take a little longer that the offical SMS app to load up. I love all of our underground developers but truth is that when Apple make some thing offical for the iphone it just works better period. Also when your phone is jailbroken its seem to be alittle sluggish. Things don't scroll as good, the overall stability of the software just isn't the same. Unfortunatly there will never be a day when we wont need to jailbreak because Apple will never give us everything that we want. I only have a few things I want to see in 3.0, phone wide copy and paste. Phone wide landscape mode for landscape SMS, Email, Notes, and any other possible place that you can type in. MMS, this is a no brainer. If a RAZAR phone on Metro PCS can MMS then why can't we? Everything else I think can be brought to the phone via the appstore if apple loosens the strings abit. Well I'll just cross my fingers and hope that apple brings the features I want in this new software update, just like everyone else.
