  • [ RELEASE ] 3G iPhone Unlocked - Eat the yellowsn0w

You've waited. You've watched. You've waited more. Now... its here!

The Dev Team has released yellowsn0w, the 3G iPhone unlock. Its available NOW via Cydia, you'll need to add their source (check the release post for the URL - they'd prefer sites didn't link the repo url) then check your Changes tab - yellowsn0w should be right on top. If you don't know how, here's how to add a source in Cydia. Refresh if you don't see it. If you're reading this later, just search for yellowsn0w in Cydia (making sure of course you've added their source). As guessed (and confirmed a bit later) from their post earlier today, IT WORKS WITH THE 02.28.00 BASEBAND version - in fact, ONLY for that baseband version. Meaning yes, you will need to update in iTunes and then use PwnageTool on a freshly updated 2.2 iPhone if you DON'T have 02.28.00 right now. Running the unlock on older basebands will simply cause it to exit, and do nothing. "No harm, no foul."

All you do is go to the package in Cydia and install just like you'd install any other package. Boom - restart the iPhone, and...

...wait for the slide to unlock screen, then wait 10 or 15 secs more. If you don’t see your carrier name pop up, then remove your SIM, reinsert it, and wait 10 secs more. This is the step we’ll be working on eliminating next.
Then you're unlocked. A quick note for users whose SIM cards come preinstalled with menus or apps on them, you'll

...need to pull and reinsert the SIM once after rebooting the phone to engage the unlock. Even though it’s needed only once per boot, it’s still a nuisance and we’ll be fixing that ASAP... You’ll know if you fall into that “extra step” category if your carrier doesn’t show up within about 10 seconds of the slide to unlock screen.

There is a known issue with SIM cards that have STK (SIM Toolkit) application menus, these menus are usually items such as “top up” “get credit” etc. These menu items confuse the application sometimes, removing and reinserting the SIM fixes this issue.
    Answers to some potential questions:

My modem software says I have {less than 02.28.00} - can I still unlock?
Yes, but you have to upgrade your baseband to 02.28.00 before you do anything. First restore completely to 2.2 in iTunes (just connect the iPhone to the computer, go to the iPhone tab in iTunes, and press Restore in the version area). You can follow this guide to jailbreak after, then install the unlock from Cydia.

Is this permanent? In other words, will I be able to upgrade my firmware when the next one comes out and keep my unlock?
No. This is a soft[ware] unlock, not a hardware unlock, so you'll need to do as we've mostly been doing - wait to upgrade on new firmwares (all current firmwares are unlockable as of now) until the Dev Team releases a patch. Of course we'll have details for you every time Apple comes out with a firmware update.

What if I WANT to remove the unlock?
yellowsn0w is completely removable through Cydia, the command line, and iTunes.

    I'm still on [2.1 / 2.0.2 / 2.0.1 / 2.0] firmware on my iPhone 3G, but would like to upgrade... what should I do?
Back up your iPhone. Restore in iTunes. Follow this guide to upgrade to 2.2 jailbroken, then simply install yellowsn0w from Cydia when you're finished - unlocked, jailbroken, enjoy.

I have T-Mobile, and they've recently upgraded their network to include 3G. Can I use the T-Mobile 3G data network with my unlocked iPhone 3G?
No - T-Mobile and AT&T use different 3G frequencies, so your iPhone 3G won't pick up T-Mobiles 3G network. You CAN however still use T-Mobile EDGE and GPRS just fine with the iPhone 3G - as well as all T-Mobile's voice features, and WiFi of course.

I have AT&T. I don't plan on selling my iPhone anytime soon, and I'm staying with AT&T. Is there any benefit for me to unlock my iPhone?
Nope. Aside from the ability to use the iPhone 3G on other networks than it comes locked to (T-mobile in the States, various carriers elsewhere), and the higher potential asking price if you sell your iPhone unlocked, there are no benefits to unlocking your iPhone.

OMG WTF BBQ!!!! This is awesome and I want to donate. Who do I send money to?
Don't. They like uh... post cards. Scanned. And emailed.

I think you're wrong about the basebands it will work with. I have an older baseband, and I'm going to run the unlock anyway. I think it will magically work in my case.
I'm going to have a sandwich. After we each do these things, lets reconvene and see who's happier.

[B]Edit: T-Mobile USA Users must turn off the 3G toggle in settings.

Everyone: You MUST have your SIM card in (without the proxy chip) throughout the entire process. With your SIM card installed... Install yellowsn0w 0.9, then reboot and wait up to 2 minutes for the phone to get service. If it doesn't work then uninstall 0.9 and try version 0.91. Keep reporting

If you have a SIM PIN you will need to REMOVE this first before running yellowsn0w... it is not compatible (yet)[/B

Update: Version 0.9.5 should fix T-Mobile USA outgoing call SIM issues.

EDIT: In case there is still any confusion about how to unlock your 3G iPhone, a tutorial has been created. Be sure to read the instructions very carefully so that you are on the right firmware or you maybe never be able to unlock your 3G.

the airplane mode thing seems to work better if you let the phone fall asleep with it. the unlock and turn it off... works for me everytime i try to make a call and lose my bars but its 5 bars everytime.sorry about the spelling my 3g hasnt adjusted to me yet.....damn it feels good to say that...in my opinion just text someone and tell them to call you and stop whining

I have mine working with my mothers old sim but I still want to find a solution for everyone. does anyone know when the dev team will be addressing some of these issues since we did give up our turbo sim cards to do this. I think if we could get some advice from them atleast. I am not complaining im very grateful for everything they do all I am saying is this software has gotten a lot of hype and for them to say we are working on the issues or anything would be very helpful. Again I feel if you have an old sim your good if you have a new sim pray the dev team helps us

Well said since all work is done free it's hard to complain. I know mine is working so people will be mad but just like everyone else if mine didn't work I would be waiting or buying a 2.2 sim proxy on ebay... lol... I just think its sad people say the dev team failed. So untrue so many successful unlocks usually go unreported.... Which is sad all the labor of the dev team...

I can't get past the "yellowsn0w -q" for the life of me LOL keeps coming back resource busy.

Is that because everyone is probably trying it? Or?

Not sure, I only enter those commands 1 time and after I turned airplane mode on and off it started coming up immediately. I was pretty happy, at first I couldn't receive calls and my 5bar dropped to 1bar, I turned on/off airplane again and it started back up. Received a call, then called out and same with text.

When it starts working for all I can tell you it holds better reception then the sim proxies. I used Gevey and had to report every time I went No Service.

I tried all the methods posted, roasted and toasted. None worked so I left it alone, and then somehow it started working by its damn self. I started reloading my Cydia items and of course a few of them made the phone reboot, so I lost the signal. I think it's safe to call yellowsn0w a failure. Anything that makes an iphone an ipod is a failure. I'm positive this will be fixed eventually, but who knows when that will be.

Go ahead and flame me for saying this, but they had a working unlock for lower basebands. MuscleNerd did a live video showing just that. And I assume they had been testing and had those unlocks working just fine. Then suddenly they get 2.28 to unlock, and they run with it? It doesnt make sense to me. This shouldnt have gone public so soon.

well it worked for me for a 2nd time just now after trying several guides.

basically as you are impatient you'd normally bypass the unlock screen after having sbsetting/bosspref reboot.
well I reset the network setting in the settings - general tab on the bottom, then it will reboot.

data roaming, 3g wifi and all was off as such.

after restarted instead of unlocking I just let it sit for 1-2 minutes, then remembered, unlocked the screen and went into settings.

in setting turned airplane mode on and waited about 15-20 seconds.

after turning airplane mode back off it searched a bit longer then usual and for the second time I got the chippie back.

(posting this mainly for my cousin that also was fighting with this )

I disagree. Unless you have no plans of traveling outside the States (what kind of person would you be?), it is convenient to unlock and use SIM cards from the country you are visiting, rather than using the AT&T international rates. Besides, nobody would call you if you were, say, in Europe and still using your american SIM card. It would be too expensive for the Europeans. So, unlocking is always good.

Well if you actually READ my post I said that they got PWNED THIS TIME!!! I didn't say anything about any of the other times. And I agree that they will probably find a solution SOME DAY but in case you didn't notice this thing was already supposed to be working for the most part but for as many issues as people are having, I would consider this release an EPIC FAIL!

LOL you guys sure do act like you do all kinds of traveling. With as many people that try to act like they want their phone unlocked for when they "TRAVEL ABROAD" you guys must have a GRIP of sky miles

I'm curious anyone with a working tzones sim try another tmobile sim with a diffrent data plan?

The reason I ask I tried my wifes her sim is the same age 1.5 years she has the 19.99 plan. I got it going I also had my tmobile crew some over and my finding were only 2 out of 5 sims worked. The other three call failed soon as I hit call.

I'm proudly to announce that i'm the owner of a 16G 3g unlocked iphone working flawless on t-mobile. No dropped calls, workins SMS, Edge is really smooth. After 5 hours of trying all kind of methodes that i've seen here and on devteam blog, the only one that worked for me was with Bossprefs installation.
      SO...
      1. fresh install in itunes to 2.2 firmware and 2.28.00 baseband
      2. QuickPwn the iphone (see iClarified for info)
      3. Add yellowsn0w source in cydia and install it
      4. Reboot the phone
      5. Install Bossprefs from cydia
      6. Make sure you have the sim card u want to use inside the phone
      7. Acces Bossprefs from your homescreen and turn everything OFF (3G, Wi-FI , Edge is gonna stay ON but it's ok, Bluetooth)
      8. REBOOT the iphone from Bossprefs, not the usual reboot!!! (very important)
      9. After reboot, take the SIM card out, wait for about 2 minutes at least and the put the SIM card back inside.

I hope it's going to work for you too!!!
