Google has announced the launch of brand new service, named "Cloud Print". This new service is available on mobile devices such as those running iOS 3.0 or later, including Android, as well as your PC (no mac yet) with Google Chrome. "Cloud Printing" will allow you to print from Gmail's interface, right from your mobile device!
To share printers you will need Google Chrome 9.0.597.1 or greater installed on the PC with your printer connected, so that you can connect it to the Google service. The setup is fairly simple as you would expect, and brings a whole new level of mobility. Google promises that support for the feature through Mac and Linux computers is "coming soon"
Imagine printing an important document from your smartphone on the way to work and finding the printout waiting for you when you walk in the door. Just open a document in Google Docs or an email in Gmail in your mobile browser and choose "Print" from the dropdown menu in the top right corner. You can also print certain kinds of email attachments (such as .pdf or .doc) by clicking the "Print" link that appears next to them.
While some of you might be saying, "Well isn't this just like AirPrint", and yes it is somewhat similar, however, Google's Cloud Print service, works from any connection, whereas the AirPrint from Apple, will only work if your on the same Wi-Fi network as the shared printer.
It's great to see this kind of functionality being adopted into our mobile lives. Now I just have to find something to print.
