With RedSn0w 0.7.2 iPod Touch 1g and 2g users can jailbreak 3.0 firmware on Windows. Before following this guide please restore your iPod Touch to 3.0 firmware. To get the 3.0 firmware you have to connect to iTunes, check for updates, and buy it for about $10. Yes Apple is screwing you. Positive side is that if you have both a 1g and a 2g you get to download firmware for both for $10.

You will need RedSn0w 0.7.2 which you can download right here along with the 3.0 firmware file for your device. Since you already bought and downloaded the firmware in order to upgrade to 3.0 you can find it one your computer

iPod2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw is the iPod Touch 2g 3.0 firmware file.
iPod1,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw is the iPod Touch 1g 3.0 firmware file.

On XP they are located in
    CDocuments and Settings\ YOUR USER NAME \Application Data\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates\

On Vista the are located in
    CUsers\ YOUR USER NAME \AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\iTunes\iPod Software Updates\

Lets begin. Extract redsn0w-win_0.7.2.zip to a location on your computer and run redsn0w.exe.

    Click Browse.

Find your firmware file, select it, and click Open.

RedSn0w will tell you that the ISPW has been successfully identified. Click Next.

You'll see a pop up as RedSn0w does some stuff.

Select to Install Cydia and click Next.

Now you should plug in your iPod Touch and turn it off. Once you are done click Next.

RedSn0w gives you instructions. We are entering DFU mode now. First hold the power button for 3 seconds.

Keep holding the power button and start holding the home button for 10 seconds.

Release the power button but continue holding the home button for 30 seconds.

RedSn0w does its thing. Let it.

Finally RedSn0w has finished loading everything onto your iPod Touch. You will see a pretty screen on your iPod as it is being jailbroken. Don't mess with your iPod while all this is going on. After your iPod restarts you are done!

I'd like to jailbreak my ipod touch 2g as well but can't seem to find any tutorials with the set up I currently have.

      ipod touch 2g
      jailbroken firmware 2.2.1

What do I have to do to get to the upgraded 3.0 or 3.1 firmware, and jailbreak it again as well? TheCrow13 would you be able to help me out? sounds like you know what you are doing.

      Thanks

So I've managed to jailbreak my ipod (thanks thecrow13!), I'm on 3.1.2 firmware. but so far the ipod seems a bit unstable or slower? which firmware woudld be better for a jailbroken ipod touch? 3.0 instead of the latest?

When I try to get past the first screen it tell me "Unable to recognize Specified IPSW". I have Windows XP and went to the directory, the file name of the IPSW is "iPod2,1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw" I have a 2g IPod Touch that was updated to 3g Firmware through Apple (paid 10$). Can anyone help me? Thanks!

okay i feel a bit stupid asking this because the answer is probably right in front of my face haha.

i have vista 32bit operating system. i followed the path to find that file but i dont even have an App Data folder under my User folder. When I updated my iPod after buying it off a friend, the update cost $5.99 and I don't remember a file being installed. the current software version of my ipod is 3.1.2, and it's a 1st gen ipod.

What can I do or where could the file be?

Okay I found it but now it says its unable to recognize specified IPSW.

It is illegal to distribute modified ipsw files.
I am surprised MMI allowed your post to stay as it opens them up to aiding and abetting your illegal activities.

O.k Confusion(ROFL), you so proper and have never done any of this right(lol) Even Jailbreaking is illegal in a manufactures stand point, so what are you even trying to say because what you have done so far is illegal!

Jailbreaking is not illegal. What you are doing is.
Neither I, nor the Dev Team condone illegal activities.

Oh now your affiliated with the DevTeam hey, so if you don't like this post which has been here for a bit now than report it and I will take responsibility! Are you that nieve that you don't think they can do this on their own and how do you think 98% of the members have done this stuff, I don't think you paid for everything you have on your iPhone/iPod! Also it took you a while to respond, were you looking for illegal firmware(rofl)? Just leave it alone and go play nice, your not a Mod. and quit trying to be one!

You know what, just leave it alone and go help someone. The link that I offer for the firmware is the same one that is linked here and over at MacCiti, so whatever man and what I do via PM and not in the open forum is not your business and how would you know if the DevTeam condone firmware downloads!

But what, so what if your a Mod somewhere else that is good for you but that has nothing to do with this site does it. So just leave it alone and if the Mods here like Blkcadi who I get along with, have looked all over and have not said nothing about what I wrote. Like I said many members/Mods. are over at MacCiti and they have a link for the same link for iPhone/iPod firmware, nothing about it being wrong so keep on chatting to yourself

I always thought jail breaking was illegal and that Apple would cut off support for you if you did it.?
    1. confucious's Avatar

Apple keep on saying it's illegal in the hope that someone will believe them.
It has never been tested in court but neither I nor the Dev Team believe it is illegal otherwise we wouldn't do it.
The EFF do not believe it to be illegal and want it to be specifically excluded from the DMCA which is why Apple are making a big fuss trying to convince people it is.
The law is unclear and hopefully it will be clarified and jailbreaking will be specifically excluded from the DMCA.
