  • [ HOW TO ] Jailbreak iPod Touch with redsn0w | 1G/2G | OS X

This guide shows you how to jailbreak your iPod Touch (1G or 2G) using the DevTeam's redsn0w tool.

First you'll need to do two things:
    1. Backup and Restore your iPod Touch. Just connect to iTunes and sync. If you have any Cydia apps from a previous firmware, they will be deleted when we restore. Here's a few places you may want to back up manually if you're worried about it... I didn't.

      /var/mobile/Library/AddressBook - Contacts
      /var/mobile/Library/Calendar - Calendar
      /var/mobile/Library/Notes - Notes
      /var/mobile/Library/Safari - Bookmarks, Cookies
      /var/mobile/Library/SMS - Text Messages.
    2. Download redsn0w.

redsn0w 0.7 for Mac Megaupload Rapidshare
Alright, open redsn0w now that you've downloaded it. You'll be greeted with the welcome screen, and asked to browse for your 3.0 .ipsw file. You should have already restored to it, so if you don't have it on your desktop (read: you downloaded it through iTunes), it will most likely be located at Macintosh HD/Users/(your name) Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates/iPod2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw in your computer.

Browse to it and find it, and redsn0w should sit a sec saying processing, then tell you the IPSW has been successfully identified. Click Next.

redsn0w will run through a flurry of info in a popup window.

Next you'll be asked if you want to install Cydia. You do. Click Next.

K, this bit is a LITTLE tricky. You'll see the screen with instructions on entering DFU mode - only thing to be aware of is you should have your iPod Touch IN HAND when you press Next (after following the instructions to turn it off while connected), with your fingers ready to press Power and Home at same time - the instructions come fast, and are on a precise time limit. I had to do it twice.

Follow the instructions in holding down the power button and various steps.

Now you'll see the app telling you more info as it goes through its steps. During this time your iPod Touch will have some images on it as well.

Assuming all went well, that's it! Click Finish, and your iPod Touch will sit doing some more stuff about 2 minutes, then you're all good!

Note: If your iPod Touch won't start back up (just goes to Apple loading screen and stays), its probably because you didn't Restore to a fresh 3.0 BEFORE running this tool.

plug it in to your comp, open up itunes, and restore. a fresh start, no apps or anything. then try the jailbreak process again.

If you want some of them then back up them up in itunes and after you restore and jailbreak select the ones you want and sync them back on your ipod. I'm not quite sure about the legal aspects of jailbreaking, you might want to ask one of the moderators about it or someone else thats been around jailbreaking longer than i have.

I downloaded firmware 3.0 for my 1gen ipod, am I still able to jailbreak it? And what are the chances of my ipod "bricking?"

Yes, follow the guide in the beginning of this post and you should have a successful jailbreak.

To my understanding its extremely difficult if not impossible to "brick" an ipod touch.

Is it only with that link you put in? Or does it say that with anything you do? you might try restoring your ipod back to 3.0 and then jailbreak it with redsn0w 0.8, that fixed all my issues from jailbreaking it with a 7. version.

I went on Cydia and it was saying I shouldn't have downloaded Icy while jailbreaking so I restored my ipod. I can't seem to get in DFU mode, iTunes keeps detecting my iPod and turns it on. Then when I follow the steps on RedSn0w. (The counting part) it says that the device is not detected? What am I doing wrong??

Yea, most people have problems when they download icy and cydia. When you plug your ipod in to your computer and after itunes comes up and turns your ipod on (if it's already off) close itunes and shut your ipod off, and make sure nothing else is open and that your ipod is shutdown. then run redsn0w triple check each step by step and that should take care of it. Oh and before you do that restore your ipod again (i know you already did but hell it couldnt hurt).

One more thing i thought of, go into your itunes and set it up to not automatically open when your ipod is plugged in, that should take care of the itunes turning it on when its detected.

Wow thanks sooo much, my other question is when I started running cydia it asked to update, I tried the two updates but it kept saying error? Is it because I had Icy?

No problem man, glad i could help. Yea that could be a possibility. I think its easiest to just have cydia alone because its an awesome program that is well made to operate smoothly with no problems. i havent had a single problem yet using just cydia.

I found this post when searching in great frustration and a bit of desperation- I accidentally deleted an important voice memo yesterday from my ipod touch, didn't even realize I had touched the delete button until the little wheel was spinning and it was dissolving before my eyes I'm a long-time mac user, but new to the "touch" (couple months ago, have the 3.0 version (7A341), 32G). I recall some years ago hearing about doing things under "terminal" but I'm not well versed in this area, and don't know if it would even work for the touch. This post makes me hopeful, but it's also daunting- I'm afraid I'd screw up my ipod in trying to do it- so, my questions: 1) can this process described above work to retrieve voice memos? 3) what is the risk of my messing up and losing other stuff in this altered mode? Has anyone else actually had success recovering deleted files on the touch? (not just mp3s)- thanks so much for any insight you might share- seems like some knowledgeable people here.

FYI, I did all the steps above to jailbreak and it seems to have gone really smoothly- all complete, "finished!", etc. ipod touch started back up on it's own just fine. Sorry to be so dense here, but I don't realize how this has now helped me- is being "jailbroken" a permanent thing unless I do something like "go back to jail" (not that I know how to do that!)? Also, and most importantly, is being jailbroken a "state" that will allow me to go and find my lost voice memo from yesterday? That's what I really need to do. I don't really have any sense of what else being jailbroken allows me to do! Thanks, please give me a clue about retrieving lost voice memo. BTW, I found some thread about using something called "SFTP".... but it seemed to be for iphone not ipod touch. anyway, thanks. your instructions were really clear and it all seemed to work, I'm jailbroken, for whatever it's worth ;-)
