  • "Jailbreak Monte" Ported to iOS 4.1, 4.3 Is Next

MuscleNerd announced last night that the he has successfully ported the Monte untether to use iOS 4.1 blobs. This means that there is no need to burn an exploit to jailbreak iOS 4.2.1, and that the new greenpois0n previewed by Chronic Dev might be held in reserve. It also resolves ongoing concerns about SHSH piracy that have created controversy in the jailbreak community.

The "Jailbreak Monte" method is a way to recycle exploits by convincing the device that it's running a given firmware right up to the pwnage step, then switching to the newer firmware thereafter. Currently, you need to have an iOS 4.2b3 SHSH blob - which only people in the developer program legitimately have access to - in order to jailbreak 4.2.1 untethered using Monte. When the next version of redsn0w is released, you'll only need iOS 4.1 SHSH blobs, which redsn0w will fetch for you whether or not you'd backed yours up: Apple is still giving those to everyone from their servers. EDIT 01/23/11: Note: Apple is NOT actually giving out 4.1 blobs anymore.

Encouragingly, MuscleNerd says that Monte is a lot more versatile than even he had though, noting that he "had seriously overcomplicated things before today." The team is currently working on porting Monte forward to 4.3, which would make "ultra-recycle" even more green than it is today.

It may seem that way now but this method should work on future firmwares as well. It is a good method for people who do have these SHSH to be able to continue to have untethered jailbreaks in the future without having to wait for a new exploit to be found.

Yes. But I was a lucky one. I had problems with my original iPhone 4 with 4.1 and it was replaced at the Apple store with 4.2.1. I knew I couldn't get a untethered JB but ran TinyUmbrella just to save the 4.2.1 for any future JB. To my surprise TinyUmbrella saved 4.1, 4.2.1 and 4.2b3. The replacement must of been used/re-manufactured and returned to the Apple store and was JB before with the 4.1 SHSH saved on the servers. So I just downgraded to 4.1 without any problems.

Heard it before the article, im always looking at these tweets and its good to hear Musclenerd has an easy to use jailbreak that requires 4.1 SHSH blobs, but its so user friendly that it fetches it for you. I've always loved redsn0w, the best jailbreak there currently is.

p0sixninja stated a few hours ago that they are working fast to get (GP) released so it sounds 'to me' like Chronic Dev is still planning their release despite all this other news.

"We're all working as fast as we can. A few issues left to be resolved in our kernel payload. Thanks for your patience"

I had always assumed that those were the versions that I had saved from my own iPhone. Is this correct? If so, I have 4.2b3 saved. I am not a dev, how is this possible?
      Mine says 4.2.1+

      Your facts are wrong.

Only developers have access to the 4.2 beta 3 firmware. Anyone who has chosen to "make their life easier" with cydia has access to the blobs (or via TinyUmbrella). The blobs just approve your restore to any given firmware.

Paul Daniel Ash, what you wrote is not good journalism, do your research before writing. You have really confused the community. Its sad...

If cydia shows your 4.1 shsh saved, you can untether the jailbreak on 4.2.1 without pirating the firmware itself (4.2b3 ipsw).

If cydia does not show your 4.1 shsh or if you have never JB, this update to redsn0w does not affect you in any way.
      WAIT FOR GREENP0ISON!

Ya never know. posix has been tweeting like it may come out when ready. That's just my view on his words though, it may actually be smarter if they did wait for 4.3 to come out.

I personally think they should wait too. It sounds like they may release it anyway but ur guess is as good as mine.

I almost don't care anymore cuz I'm fine w/ 4.1. I tried the 4.2 JBMonte for a bit and couldn't tolerate the bugs so I switched back...

I haven't upgraded my iPad to 4.2 so I can't really say if it's a whole lot better than 3.2. I've got folders and multitasking so I'm happy for now!
