  • Apple’s Latest Commercial touts “Two is better than one”

Apple’s latest iPhone commercial features both an AT&T and a Verizon iPhone 4 being used at the same time. The tagline “Two is better that one” says it all. Apple obviously wants people to know that there is no discernable difference between both cellular providers. But is this entirely true? The iPhone 4 isn’t due to hit Verizon’s network until February 10, so until we can test both units side by side, we’ll just have to go by what information Apple and Verizon have released so far.

The biggest difference between the two versions of the iPhone 4 is that the Verizon iPhone uses a CDMA chip, whereas the AT&T iPhone uses a GSM chip. For the average user, however, the difference is quite minimal. One advantage of the GSM iPhone 4 on AT&T’s network over the Verizon model is the fact that you can be on a call and check the internet or email at the same time. Also, AT&T’s network is slightly faster than Verizon’s, but AT&T has poorer coverage area. The Verizon iPhone may not access the fastest network, but with Verizon’s excellent coverage area, most users won’t have the same difficulties getting a decent signal that AT&T customers have had to endure.

When the iPhone 4 becomes available to Verizon customers next month, they will have the ability to use their phones as Wi-Fi hotspots right out of the box. AT&T charges $20 a month for the privilege of tethering. Hopefully, AT&T will stop charging extra for this feature, if only to stay competitive with Verizon.

It’s also been reported that the price of the Verizon iPhone 4 without a two-year contract is $50 more that the AT&T version. It’s unclear at this time why that is, but it may have something to do with the price of the CDMA chip inside the phone.

So as you can see, Apple may want you to think that both versions of the iPhone 4 are exactly the same, but there are a few key differences. I also wonder if Apple has fixed the antenna problem that plagued the iPhone 4 when it was first released. Apple doesn’t want another Antennagate on their hands. When Apple launches the iPhone 5 later this year, I imagine they will only produce one universal version of the phone, if only to keep costs down. For now though, it’s nice to finally have a choice of wireless providers.

As stated some are happy that Verizon is getting the iPhone and some are not. Nice commercial however I can't wait to see how the iPhone is going to be on Verizon's network. I have liked At&t because of the good customer service they have over Verizon. When I was on Verizon I did not like where their stores are or customer service.

If I ever changed over to Verizon it would be because At&t service is pretty bad in my area in Florida. I get sick of the dropped calls down here.

Also if Verizon ever wanted me I would have to get everything I have right now with At&t. Unlimited data on my iPads, unlimited data on my iPhones, unlimited texting and unlimited voice for the same price as I am paying right now... if they did this then I would have to really think about being able to talk and check email and such before changing over...

When will verizon announce their rate plans for the iPhone? And I doubt that wifi hotspot feature will be free.

They said on or before the 4th of February. An I would be surprised if the hotspot feature was free. Although it would make for an excellent marketing strategy to take customers from AT&T, if they did make it free.

If two is better than one, how'd it take the 3 1/2 years to find out?

Why would it matter considering you have to use WiFi on both? Network makes no difference.

Once the VZ iPhone is jailbroken and 3G Unrestrictor (may be up for a name change) is installed, who knows if it will work or not. Right now even with a good 3G signal facetime doesn't work well over 3G. Haven't tried Skype yet though.

Why are both hands white? Isn't the one of the right black? Is someone else holding the phone for them?

What a horrible commercial. The iphone they were doing all the stuff with was the ATT phone while the verizon phone just sucks because it can't handle the voice and data at the same time. At least there will be people who will buy it from Verizon and the rest of the bums can finally get off the ATT Servers and make the service better. ( Yes I am bitter ) It's false advertising.

What makes you think that they're both AT&T iPhones?

i work for a radioshack and we have a att rep that comes in every 2 weeks to let us know the info on the network and plans... The ATT iphone is slightly different than the VERIZON version...with the ATT iphone 4 you can talk on the phone while surfing the web and downloading apps....with the Verizon you can not do that....ATT will be rolling out the LTE service very soon and with VERIZON iphone they will be using their OLD CMDA network(wont be as fast and you think)if u dont believe me just wait til the verizon phone hit the market.

No its not. Show me once when they used voice and data at the same time. Plus one of the phones had the verizon carrier logo.

FaceTime works fine when you have good signal (mind you I don't mean AT&T 'good', I'm in Canada on a pretty decent network).

Even with a hack such as 3G Unrestrictor I don't think it will be possible to switch from a voice call to FT because I believe there is handshaking done over data before the voice call is dropped which means it's a non-starter on CDMA. It probably will be possible to initiate a FT call directly though.

why would the wifi hotspot be free. my brother has a droid and it cost like $20 a month along with everything else. the best bet is the get the verizon iphone, wait for a jailbreak and install mywi. i cant wait to get rid of my envy touch(which is a piece of crap and finally get a iphone)
