  • ThemeIt: A New Theme Store App Brings Competition to Cydia
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNZph_jmf0o]YouTube - Theme it, the theme store - Teaser 1a (with sound) : the iPhone app[/ame]

It's easy to see that one of the most successful items sold in the Cydia store hands down is Winterboard Themes. With hundreds of designers and millions of users theming their iPhone, iPod and iPad, it creates quite a community of people. Since Cydia aquired Rock, every theme you purchase generally comes through Cydia, unless you perhaps donated to a designer.

With less than only a day left before it's launch, there are some variables that could shake up the "competition", indirectly bringing some headaches to our iPhone god, Saurik, the man behind Cydia. In fact, Saurik has already been in touch with the folks behind ThemeIt, and has politely asked that they hold back on releasing such a product, but ThemeIt is keeping it's plans to release. However, over the course of all of this, it sounds like ThemeIt has lost their original repository partner, and that word has been travelling from within the community encouraging themers to stay away from the project. No Comment.

An artcile over at ReadWriteWeb, goes into detail on the response given from ThemeIt, speaking out about their view on competition and in the end, only seem to make things more heated, not really helping the situation.

Well community? What do you think? Is there room for another App Store? As much as I want to see the theme community push for upgrades and new ways to be a part of it all with ease and intuitive browsing, I can only see a headache forming for both Saurik, and ThemeIt from this process. In my opinion, things need to be closely discussed between ThemeIt and Saurik to come to a reasonable solution. We'll keep up with this release tomorrow and let you know what happens. I'll try and get Saurik to give us his thoughts as well so it's not all hear-say... yeah thats right I gave my opinion anyways.

    From ThemeIt:
A carefully designed platform (application and website) allowing focus on high-quality themes and also the artists behind the themes in a way that wasn't possible before… it's the Theme Store you've been dreaming of using.

With some of the best theme creators already on-board we can guarantee you'll have access to amazing and exclusive content in an environment that's sure to meet everyone's needs. Focusing on high-quality, complete themes, the goal of Theme it isn't to have a million themes in the gallery… but the best ones available.

The platform includes a very user-friendly website and an iPhone/iTouch application to showcase and distribute the themes with instant access to the information you really want, such as screenshots, details, compatibility and much more. You'll also have the opportunity to learn a little more about the artists that create the themes you love and use. A section will be dedicated to these wonderful designers.

MAybe you dont understand, i charge companies hundreds or thousands of dollars for unique logos websites etc. What I do here I make THOUSANDS of images and offer it for 3 bucks. If I charged my normal rate as per unique graphics you would have one VERY expensive theme...

A lot of people use BackBoard (the alternate and better version of winterboard) Theme It will be making their own installer in the future also. And at Cydia 1.1 release saurik "says" he will update it.

I really like the idea of Themeit. Ultimately I hope they're better at managing than Cydia/ Saurik -- It's been more than 6 weeks since I put my theme on the Cydia Store and I still don't have access to Cydia Connect (where I can track my theme's progress).

      $2 isn't worth any theme.

Great to hear! This would be a stupendous step towards themes and their makers. Having a store dedicated and solely for themes if great, really. The good thing as well is that ONLY HIGH QUALITY themes are hosted on here, so you dint have to worry about ssarching for a Jets vs Steelers theme and all that themed is the homescreen and lock and you're done. You will only find full themes on here and for the guy complaining about why themes arent free is because these take lots of time to develop, and we have families to fees as well, so i do hope you understand its not just all about the money, please get that through your head. I am exciting for it to be released, and i hope all our themers are here to celebrate with me Congrats guys and thank you for all your hard work, i'm actually designing a theme as we speak

I fail to see why exactly this is bad, looks great in my opinion... Saurik has done alot of good, but that doesn't imply that there can't be other, maybe even better alternatives to his theme store... I'm all for this, bring it on!

Okay i'll try not to imagine you use xSellize or Sinful.

Okay why dont you actually THINK of a theme to make, HOW its going to look. Ok, next.

      Go get PhotoShop

Now get the Stock 4.0 Theme and go theme over 1,000 images using as little help from google as possible, because themes that use ever single image from another theme and google is worthless, you actually need to CREATE your very own icon that no one has seen before. Now before you bash me on how some themes have similar images or use SOME images from google: Those are the .99 themes.

Go make vector graphics in photoshop, make tons of layers, effects, etc.

After you bust your head now tell me its not worth $2. It takes time, and we have families to feed.

Cydia had the absolute worst interface and user experience of any app I've ever used on my phone.

If competition is the only thing that will make cydia improve, then I welcome any competition.

I stopped using themes awhile back. Everything works better when you keep it simple! Winterboard slows phones down and I'd rather have a bug free, fast phone!

      Just my 2

How about everyone just decides on their own. I know if u love themes then u will enjoy your experience with ThemeIt. If u like Cydia to find themes, then continue to use it. It's really not that hard.

Gotta admit, the changed just made to the themes section in Cydia is not bad, I like it. If saurik updates it at a regular basis, itll help.

      But BRING ON THEMEIT

I never had a problem with Rock crashing, Cydia is what crashed my iPod 3 times. On the brighter side, the new Cydia hasn't crashed my iPod once.

Obviously you didn't edit all 1500 UI elemnts and see how much work goes into making a good looking theme, nor ever ran a repository.

Let me educate you a little and see what goes into 2 dollars:

      1. A real theme is changing the entire user interface not just a background and few icons. Massive amounts of time and creativity goes into this. Sometimes I worked on themes 12 hours a day 7 days a week.

      2. Hosting:
In my case I didn't want my themes to go into a pool of half *** made themes so I made my own repo. I had to learn to work with Debian. My repository is on the More Package Sources list in Cydia and because of this I get about 700Gigs of traffic so a dedicated server is needed. It costs me $150 a month for the server, money I don't always have and could otherwise spend on other things. Just imagine what kind of traffic Saurik, MMI and BB get.

      3. Distribution:
Once you publish something in Cydia it will pop in the Changes section at the top. That is when it gets the most exposure. Withing a few hours the other repositories throw in a slew of garbage and push your theme all the way to the bottom. Within a few days you are buried and just hope for some word of mouth.

      4. The Garbage:
Sadly it is a necessity in order to keep a repository financially afloat. The ad revenue is a must unless you are rich and don't have anything better to do with your money. So people who complain about Advertising just shove it.

      5. Cydia Store
Once it became a reality, I had to pay somebody to code the back end in order for my repo to work with Saurik's API. I had to wait over a month for my package names to be added to his database because I'm not a big fish and I'm not in his circle of friends. Even so, winterboarder was one of the first repos to sell themes in Cydia Store. Don't imagine that it is a money maker either. At best it made me 20 bucks a month.

      6. Incentive:
Why would anyone put in all this effort? For me is a very good learning experience and the stuff I learned by doing this you can't learn in a classroom. If you run a repo like MMI I just can't imagine doing it part time while holding a job to put a roof over your head and bread on the table. All the repositories got started out of passion and if you can make a living doing what you love, I think that is bliss. Never easy, but bliss none the less.

      7. Cydia Theme Center
Hallelujah and props to MacCity, MMi and Saurik for making it happen. There is some order in the chaos and good theme artists will be recognized and compensated for their efforts. Now I have a second wind to make themes for 4.X firmware. As for ThemeIt nice effort hope they make it, but not likely, unless they get incorporated into Cydia.

Dramatic :/ it only takes me less than a month to make one good theme for my friends....

As for feeding families...don't be silly. If they're that desperate for money they'd be looking for high paying jobs. Maybe work for apple? ^.-

I would honestly love to see the "themes" you did. I bet your work wouldn't be worth paying for, if you think that themes should be free then your brain must not be functioning right. The work that they do is worth every cent.
