  • ThemeIt: A New Theme Store App Brings Competition to Cydia
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNZph_jmf0o]YouTube - Theme it, the theme store - Teaser 1a (with sound) : the iPhone app[/ame]

It's easy to see that one of the most successful items sold in the Cydia store hands down is Winterboard Themes. With hundreds of designers and millions of users theming their iPhone, iPod and iPad, it creates quite a community of people. Since Cydia aquired Rock, every theme you purchase generally comes through Cydia, unless you perhaps donated to a designer.

With less than only a day left before it's launch, there are some variables that could shake up the "competition", indirectly bringing some headaches to our iPhone god, Saurik, the man behind Cydia. In fact, Saurik has already been in touch with the folks behind ThemeIt, and has politely asked that they hold back on releasing such a product, but ThemeIt is keeping it's plans to release. However, over the course of all of this, it sounds like ThemeIt has lost their original repository partner, and that word has been travelling from within the community encouraging themers to stay away from the project. No Comment.

An artcile over at ReadWriteWeb, goes into detail on the response given from ThemeIt, speaking out about their view on competition and in the end, only seem to make things more heated, not really helping the situation.

Well community? What do you think? Is there room for another App Store? As much as I want to see the theme community push for upgrades and new ways to be a part of it all with ease and intuitive browsing, I can only see a headache forming for both Saurik, and ThemeIt from this process. In my opinion, things need to be closely discussed between ThemeIt and Saurik to come to a reasonable solution. We'll keep up with this release tomorrow and let you know what happens. I'll try and get Saurik to give us his thoughts as well so it's not all hear-say... yeah thats right I gave my opinion anyways.

    From ThemeIt:
A carefully designed platform (application and website) allowing focus on high-quality themes and also the artists behind the themes in a way that wasn't possible before… it's the Theme Store you've been dreaming of using.

With some of the best theme creators already on-board we can guarantee you'll have access to amazing and exclusive content in an environment that's sure to meet everyone's needs. Focusing on high-quality, complete themes, the goal of Theme it isn't to have a million themes in the gallery… but the best ones available.

The platform includes a very user-friendly website and an iPhone/iTouch application to showcase and distribute the themes with instant access to the information you really want, such as screenshots, details, compatibility and much more. You'll also have the opportunity to learn a little more about the artists that create the themes you love and use. A section will be dedicated to these wonderful designers.

The only way this is going to be successful is if the Dev team update redsn0w to have an option to install this while the jailbreak process.

Looking forward to this, working on a theme myself for this, it's been a while

Hey all, just felt like dropping my thoughts real quick then getting back to some theming .
So I have been using the actual Theme It app and Theme It dev portal for the last few weeks. First off I do love it, the interface is perfect for ME as the developer and lets me have control of it to a greater extent. Even more so than Rock did, but even better it lets you as the CONSUMER go into the store and FIND what you want get it and be done with it. I honestly think that this was better for the community that this has happened. It FORCED Jay to make improvements to his system that we as Theme developers had been clamoring for since Rock got absorbed (We sure did have one hell of a thread going in our special section!!) and had never got a response. So yes I think that Theme It is a good thing for ME as a dev for themes and for the end consumer. If Ford was the only place where you could buy a truck would you find that great new engine or part in it the next year? Probably not. If you dont agree with me I am fine with that, just dont blindly bash me for my opinions and experience with the app.
      Thanks

it's not the ONLY way, but it would definitely help! Rock only made it to one jb utility/release, blackra1n I believe, and it was still very successful. So if u know anyone from the chronic dev team or gehot have em hit me up!

It wasn't until someone took initiative enough to start this project that I started hearing he was going to be taking things a bit more seriously...

Which brings us back to the point of this thread: competition IS good for all parties...
Gotta agree with my friend here. If it was for FIF7Y, saurik wouldnt come up with time to update Cydia the way he is now. Maybe in the future he eventually would do it but this quick? Very doubtful. So don't come here telling everyone that competition is bad and this and that because if there's one thing that's truly good for end-users is competition.

No disrespect to anyone. I also understand if it wasn't for saurik Cydia wouldn't exist, much less winterboard. I'm glad he is finally putting some thoughts into themes now. This will be great for end-users.

      Gotta love Theme it though

I am really looking forward to this! Looking for a good theme on Cydia is like pulling hair off a snake :-) Something like themeit has been asked for, for 3 years or more. I come here (modmyi) to find good themes and then donate to get and email because cydia sucks so bad when it comes to themes (timeouts, and errors when trying to download larger themes which download links in emails don’t have this problem). Hell rockyourphone was better than cydia....imo. I liked the speed of it which Cydia still doesnt have and cydia is just now incorporating things from rock (like queing multiple things to install at once (use to crash ALL the time) and looking at your account purchases. Themeit will hopefully be as amazing as people are saying it is. Really looking forward to this…and if it doesn’t work out or jay buys it he won’t incorporate anything from it just like how he dealt with the rock purchase…turned out to be pointless for us.

Lucky for me I make my own themes and don't have to worry about the crap in Cydia

But...if themeIt goes into the app store then everyone will have what looks like a "jailbroken idevice" then there wouldn't be much special about
      Jb.

I think winterboard needs an update and all the crappy useless themes (90% of them won't work on today's firmware anyway)

Since when has Saurik ever regulated what can or can't be installed on your iDevice? For the denser members of this site, the answer is NEVER. If he had such control over what is installable through Cydia don't you think he'd block things such as Instal****? Hell, why wouldn't he have just blocked the ability to install Rock via Cydia?

Also, a lot of you seem to think Saurik is just sitting back making money hand over fist from Cydia. That is far from the truth.

A lot of the complaints I've read about browsing themes in Cydia are not the fault of Cydia itself. Rather they are due to crappy regulation and quality control by the repository owners themselves! To have crappy apps/themes on rather unknown repos is one thing, but to be one of the default/primary repositories and still allow the devs to submit apps/themes with incomplete info/screenshots is unacceptable. Yes, Cydia most certainly needs to renovate how it handles themes, but the big repositories need to be held to a higher level of scrutiny as well.

That being said, I don't really care one way or the other about ThemeIt. I used to install themes all the time on my phones but I've gotten tired of it and haven't even had Winterboard on my phone for almost 5 months now. I've gone in and customized some of the sounds on my iPhone, but that's as far as I plan on "theming" it for the foreseeable future.

I really would like to hear what Saurik has to say about this topic and hopefully he'll chime in on this thread soon.

      agreed

I would think that the theme creators would welcome another site for their work to be displayed. The "Uinique" theme is sick, and I can't wait for their creative minds to start rolling out more HD themes....

Just opened Cydia and Saurik has made some changes to a theme section, looking a lot like what ThemeIt are planning. Looks like a little battle will be on!

There's no reason to say anything bad about saurik, he's done a ton for the JB community and deserves the recognition. At the same time there's nothing wrong with having a nice section like ThemeIt where we don't have to sift through a million themes that aren't the best. There's no reason why both can't coexist with everyone being happy.

Saurik has direct control via Winterboard. Without it, themeing is a pain. I personally would love to see Cydia clean up the themes section. Integrate this new app into Cydia.

Sad to see Cydia Is changing to an actual AppStore where you have to pay for things. $2 isn't worth any theme.

What happened to the days of 1.x, 2.x and 3.x?
