  • ThemeIt: A New Theme Store App Brings Competition to Cydia
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNZph_jmf0o]YouTube - Theme it, the theme store - Teaser 1a (with sound) : the iPhone app[/ame]

It's easy to see that one of the most successful items sold in the Cydia store hands down is Winterboard Themes. With hundreds of designers and millions of users theming their iPhone, iPod and iPad, it creates quite a community of people. Since Cydia aquired Rock, every theme you purchase generally comes through Cydia, unless you perhaps donated to a designer.

With less than only a day left before it's launch, there are some variables that could shake up the "competition", indirectly bringing some headaches to our iPhone god, Saurik, the man behind Cydia. In fact, Saurik has already been in touch with the folks behind ThemeIt, and has politely asked that they hold back on releasing such a product, but ThemeIt is keeping it's plans to release. However, over the course of all of this, it sounds like ThemeIt has lost their original repository partner, and that word has been travelling from within the community encouraging themers to stay away from the project. No Comment.

An artcile over at ReadWriteWeb, goes into detail on the response given from ThemeIt, speaking out about their view on competition and in the end, only seem to make things more heated, not really helping the situation.

Well community? What do you think? Is there room for another App Store? As much as I want to see the theme community push for upgrades and new ways to be a part of it all with ease and intuitive browsing, I can only see a headache forming for both Saurik, and ThemeIt from this process. In my opinion, things need to be closely discussed between ThemeIt and Saurik to come to a reasonable solution. We'll keep up with this release tomorrow and let you know what happens. I'll try and get Saurik to give us his thoughts as well so it's not all hear-say... yeah thats right I gave my opinion anyways.

    From ThemeIt:
A carefully designed platform (application and website) allowing focus on high-quality themes and also the artists behind the themes in a way that wasn't possible before… it's the Theme Store you've been dreaming of using.

With some of the best theme creators already on-board we can guarantee you'll have access to amazing and exclusive content in an environment that's sure to meet everyone's needs. Focusing on high-quality, complete themes, the goal of Theme it isn't to have a million themes in the gallery… but the best ones available.

The platform includes a very user-friendly website and an iPhone/iTouch application to showcase and distribute the themes with instant access to the information you really want, such as screenshots, details, compatibility and much more. You'll also have the opportunity to learn a little more about the artists that create the themes you love and use. A section will be dedicated to these wonderful designers.

I'm not saying he would /or/ should. But wouldn't he be able to do so if he wanted to??

Ssh makes sense. I've been adding themes via Winscp for years now.
Sure! He could also block pirate repos that take money out of his, mine and others pockets every month....if he wanted to

Come on guys. Don't go overboard, I personally thought that Cydia was betterthan Rock. Especially since Jay updated Cydia to load much more quickly. It would be nice to filter new packages and updates. And yes, any douche bag can repackage a theme he/she did not make and host it up, but the Cydia team works really hard. Plus, most of the big tweaks/Apps are totally free as are the jailbreaks. So before we all get our torches and pitchforks out let's be grateful for the blessings that we've been given. Because when it comes down to it, without a jailbreak, the iPhone sux. I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin'.

If the interface is faster and cleaner than Cydia's then I'm all for it. Some of the time the themes on Cydia don't even HAVE previews..

I agree! And It's kind of a catch 22 situation. Not only would it benefit the community in so many ways, such as relieving the pressure on jailbreaking by discarding pirated repos, but also put money where it's due (theme creators). But by doing so, it would be going against everything jailbreaking stands for..... FREEDOM TO INSTALL WHAT YOU WANT.

It really sucks that it's a double standard!!

Okay one part, I didn't understand is the new repo for cydia or non-jailbroken phones.

And it wouldn't hurt to have an app theme for those who can't jailbreak or just waiting on the jailbreak to happen for those with the new FW and mc models.

Wow what is the big deal so we have a place to go for apps and a place that we go to for themes that is geared for them. I think that it will help improve the theme experience because Cydia has so many crap themes on it it takes hours to weed out the ones you like. I feel it will be an improvement for the jail break world.

      Freedom isn't necessarily free

While I'd never pirate an app or theme, I'd hate to see Saurik block any repo for any reason. If he did, then he'd become as much a control freak as Apple, which would defeat the purpose of jailbreaking in the first place.

Can't everyone see that Apple is actually missing an opportunity here. If the Apple people were as smart as they claim they are, they would not be missing the extra business that is generated by the jailbreak community. If they loosen up their many restrictions, there would be no need for Cydia or ThemeIt or any other app store. It is that simple.

All businesses in the world have one main purpose, which is to generate profit, and by increasing restrictions Apple is actually minimizing the opportunity to generate more profit from us, the jailbreak community, and sending us somewhere else. Cydia and ThemeIt people should be very thankful for the way Apple thinks and acts, for otherwise they would not exist.

      Just my two cents.

That's funny!!! You had me checking my posts to see if I implied that pirating was acceptable. I pay for all my apps/themes. K Nitsua has made some change from me. I've bought several of his themes. Matter of fact..... iNitsua Z HD is my theme now, and I find it difficult to believe that another theme will spark my interest enough to change.

No worries..I thought u meant that the jailbreak community stood for "FREE themes and apps!"

cant wait to try it out. i rarely see any new apps but tons of themes daily. hope it has a better way of viewing themes.

side note. cydia will also see much less traffic so less ad revenue.

Competition is good for the consumer. I'm looking forward to some high quality, complete themes without having to dig through the clearance bin to find them. Now I will be able to turn off "themes" in Cydia.

It's all good!! I just thought I put it blatantly by saying "Not only would it benefit the community in so many ways, such as relieving the pressure on jailbreaking by discarding pirated repos, but also put money where it's due (theme creators). ".........
      Guess you missed that.

It's fukked up how text vs. Speech can make such a huge difference between each other. I've had so many conflicts via text messaging with ex-girlfriends all due to one of us taking the text messages in the wrong context.

Words without Emphasis are rather difficult to understand without hearing them. They could mean many different things.

Sounds like you're talking out your *** to me. I used Rock pretty much exclusively and NEVER had a problem. I had stability and speed with rock, not constant reloading data wheel.
