  • ThemeIt: A New Theme Store App Brings Competition to Cydia
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BNZph_jmf0o]YouTube - Theme it, the theme store - Teaser 1a (with sound) : the iPhone app[/ame]

It's easy to see that one of the most successful items sold in the Cydia store hands down is Winterboard Themes. With hundreds of designers and millions of users theming their iPhone, iPod and iPad, it creates quite a community of people. Since Cydia aquired Rock, every theme you purchase generally comes through Cydia, unless you perhaps donated to a designer.

With less than only a day left before it's launch, there are some variables that could shake up the "competition", indirectly bringing some headaches to our iPhone god, Saurik, the man behind Cydia. In fact, Saurik has already been in touch with the folks behind ThemeIt, and has politely asked that they hold back on releasing such a product, but ThemeIt is keeping it's plans to release. However, over the course of all of this, it sounds like ThemeIt has lost their original repository partner, and that word has been travelling from within the community encouraging themers to stay away from the project. No Comment.

An artcile over at ReadWriteWeb, goes into detail on the response given from ThemeIt, speaking out about their view on competition and in the end, only seem to make things more heated, not really helping the situation.

Well community? What do you think? Is there room for another App Store? As much as I want to see the theme community push for upgrades and new ways to be a part of it all with ease and intuitive browsing, I can only see a headache forming for both Saurik, and ThemeIt from this process. In my opinion, things need to be closely discussed between ThemeIt and Saurik to come to a reasonable solution. We'll keep up with this release tomorrow and let you know what happens. I'll try and get Saurik to give us his thoughts as well so it's not all hear-say... yeah thats right I gave my opinion anyways.

    From ThemeIt:
A carefully designed platform (application and website) allowing focus on high-quality themes and also the artists behind the themes in a way that wasn't possible before… it's the Theme Store you've been dreaming of using.

With some of the best theme creators already on-board we can guarantee you'll have access to amazing and exclusive content in an environment that's sure to meet everyone's needs. Focusing on high-quality, complete themes, the goal of Theme it isn't to have a million themes in the gallery… but the best ones available.

The platform includes a very user-friendly website and an iPhone/iTouch application to showcase and distribute the themes with instant access to the information you really want, such as screenshots, details, compatibility and much more. You'll also have the opportunity to learn a little more about the artists that create the themes you love and use. A section will be dedicated to these wonderful designers.

Themeit seems cool, the app is very sluggish on my I4 on wifi. No loading wheels make you think its not doing anything, then it opens the same page 15 times in a row because you kept hitting the button. Not tearing it down just providing feedback. Hope this takes off and gets all the bugs worked out.
Theme it does not block any repo. The error people get because of sinful is because of SINFUL. Their repo is obviously giving you error. Stop being so pathetic and read before talking bad about something.

For people saying how slow it is. What you expect after a server getting THOUSANDS of hits per minute? As stated before been apple went through it and obviously they have much better servers and hosts.

Same reason why its been down. Can't get prepared for such thing. It'll slowly get back on track. Just please be patient.

As for those saying it's the same themes in Cydia...well actually not completely true. There are at least 4 that you can't find on Cydia and I can say confident that this number will grow very quickly. Plus what you expect? Themers to give up on their themes and make new ones? Doesn't work like that. At least not everyone, ToyVan me and one more member(cant remember your name, sorry!) did so but that's because we had little extra time. I also know at least 2 known Themers that are working on new themes for theme it.

Let's make it clear that this choice is made by US and us only. No pressure from anyone. It's our decision.

There's more I wanna say but I'm tired of typing now, goodbye.

Everyone is just trying to make a buck, off of who? *YOU*. Some say its how the world turns, lets never ever forget this dynamic, Saurik -- is no exception. If there was no Apple/Steve Jobs making devices, there would be no Cydia, no Saurik. Whats my point? You knew exactly who Saurik was the moment you installed Cydia, he saw an opportunity to make money off of Apple's back while everyone praised him like he liberated us, blinded by the screen brightness, whether you like Cydia or not, this is the behavior of a entrepreneur.. Why the sudden shock now? Grow up.

F.Y.I, I love Saurik, he certainly made my device more enjoyable but Im not so naive that I think that he's iNsAnE enough to sit back and watch his own cash flow decrease lol, maybe you haven't noticed but the guy is smart... I've read blogs that referred to him as the "Cydia god", he may be Cydia's messiah but he's just a parasite that latched onto Apple (pardon the metaphor). The guy made piracy rampant, imagine the money Apple loses, just sayin'... Seems to me there are a lot of people on here completely full of ****, everything was sweet when things were new and free.. Soon as Saurik gets in a tight spot you turn your backs..

We are all stealing apps, that makes us thieves, the man opened the doors so to speak -- you're just as dirty as he is, and by participation you forfeited your right to suddenly grow a conscience! Pick a side and stfu, wait for the new unlock.

Go read Saurik's posts here on MMi and you will learn that his wallet took a significant blow when he left his consulting job to dedicate his time to Cydia and jailbreaking iDevices. Let's keep the assumptions coming.

I also remember reading that at one point. Can you really doubt it. Not every dev is a gifted 16yrs old. Some have families and lives they have to support. I am pretty sure Saurik has done more for us than we will ever know. So if I am blind, screw it I like it and don't mind a guy making a living. Just remember who put all this **** in one place.

He may not make millions but I would throw a little money at the fact he is probably making 6 figures...easy. I don’t care if he makes money off it, cydia is awesome and he took advantage of his ability to make something that would make money! Rock was WAY better BUT cydia is what we have. Its slow and not organized (but that’s what the search button is for). I love themeit and will more than likely use it for my theme purchases (never bought a theme through cydia I always beta test). ThemeIt looks amazing, runs smooth (was running smooth but it’s STILL getting hammered), and is easy to navigate. If cydia had a UI overhaul to make it nicer and run like rock did then I would be a happy guy. (i wouldn’t go as far as saying its outdated, its functional and that’s what he is going for I would think)

Sorry, I just found it a bit funny that you assumed themeit had something to do with cydia being unstable and crashing. It's comparable to when people install one of my themes and then the lockscreen clock disappears so they email me and blame my theme and then realize they have 'clock hide' installed.

Actually k.nitsua sent out a tweet today saying that saurik had made a statement that the problems were due to the new cydia theme store. Sorry, didn't mean to come off as a douche, I really thought it was funny

Then uninstall it and see if it fixes your problems. I'm actually interested to find out!

Its cool. I tried uninstalling it and uninstalling the source and nothing helps. Cydia still runs fine on my other iP4 the only difference is the troubled iP4 is on firmware 4.1 while the other is on 4.2.1 and theme it is not installed.

Ok looks like i confirmed that it is theme it that is at fault and is conflicting with cydia. I installed theme it on my other iphone 4 and installed a theme and now cydia has the same exact crashing issues on this device also. Its not the install of theme it itself that causes the issue. Its once you install a theme is when you encounter the problem.

Or maybe cydia is conflicting with themeit????

Thanks for the info. I will make sure the Themeit devs look into this.

Out of curiosity what is the theme? A lot of people have installed my theme EL3MENT via themeit and nobody has reported any issues like this to me. Maybe u need to get in touch with the theme creator.

Well its two separate themes to be exact so i don't think the problem lies with the theme. I installed Tekse7en on one device and Inception HD on the other. I couldn't log into the same account on both devices (Which is stupid i think) so i had to create an additional account on the other device and couldn't bring myself to purchase the same theme twice just to experiment with the issue.
