  • Chronic Dev Team Confirms Untethered 4.2.1 Jailbreak

It looks like the Chronic Dev Team has confirmed an untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1. This comes as great news to many current-generation iOS device owners who are waiting patiently for an untethered jailbreak that does not require saved SHSH blobs and the ISPW file for iOS 4.2 beta 3, the latter of which is only available to developers. They've just a released a video showing off an iPhone 4 restarting, and then launching Cydia.

    [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5qNray7FHU[/ame]

The release comes after a public dispute between @p0sixninja, one of the creators of this jailbreak along with @0naj and @pod2g, and @MuscleNerd. @MuscleNerd had challenged @p0sixninja to "come up with [a jailbreak] in say, 10 or 20 days," and it looks like he's delivered in even less time with that. Now, I certainly don't want to put myself in the middle of that argument, and I don't think it's good to have the people that so many people in the jailbreak community (including myself) rely on fighting, but regardless, it's very exciting that their appears to be a major breakthrough for an untethered jailbreak.

The demonstration video says to keep checking GreenPois0n.com for an update. I'm sure we'll hear more about this very soon. To all of those waiting for untethered freedom, it appears that the wait should soon be over. It seems like the only issue left is that the wi-fi logo does not show up, but I for one have faith they'll get it worked out quickly.

Update: It looks like MuscleNerd has congratulated the Chronic Dev Team. Hopefully it means everyone's getting along a bit better.

I'm just happy an update is coming out, as I'm still on the PDF jailbreak w/4.0.1. It's running well but stuff is being released that only works on 4.2, so... And I put my iPad back to stock, and it might be nice to JB it again.
Thanks to all concerned for putting in their time to make this happen for all of us... whenever it is released.

On another note, people doing things for free should be thanked. Period. Your need is not their issue. Your need is not their issue. Your nee.... well, right. Anyone who whines about having to wait is a spoiled little brat who needs his fanny spanked (not in a good way, mind you). These people are not your parents, who endowed you with an incredible sense of entitlement that anything you want should be handed to you immediately (and for free), with no effort on your part. Suck it up, man up, whatever the current term is, and shut up about having to wait. You make yourselves look foolish whining/complaining.

      There. Now I feel better.

Google '4.2.1 Redsnow.' It's tethered but you'll get your JB. Or, you can Google '4.2.1 JBMonte' and u can get the BETA untethered but you're supposed to be an Apple Developer to have access to the 4.2b3 IPSW to make it work. 'Supposed to be' is the key phrase there....heehee ;-)

I moved to ATT cuz the ego meant no iPhone 4 jailbreak let alone an unlock, so I'm happy a jailbreak will happen but now I don't have to sweat it

      I donated, did u?

And friendly competition is a good thing, first out wins the biggest notoriety prize!
I pay for all my apps and themes but I have never used a jailbreak that asks for donations. I have used MANY jailbreaks from the DevTeam and they never ask for a dime. I am untethered on 4.2.1 right now thanks to the DevTeam. The other "team" has only released one jailbreak ever so far and it wasn't even their exploit, it's was GHots. So let's not act like they are owed for tons of hard work. Now I do totally agree with you that competition is a good thing.

Sure, they have some buggy crap versions of redsn0w untethered FOR MAC ONLY. Why? That helps almost nobody.

I'm seriously tempted to go and get a "Coding for Dummies" book or something like that and make me my own jailbreak. Ridiculous.

yea, a mac coded jail break for an apple hardware product? mind boggling.
bad news, "coding for crybabies" hasn't hit the shelves yet.

Not sure if this is the right spot, but how do I go from a Jailbreak'd 4.1 to 4.2.1 without losing my themes and add-ons I've purchased through Cydia?

I would have to update through iTunes, which will cause me to lose my Jailbreak .. then re-Jailbreak? Sure, I can just re-install everything, but was just wondering if there was an easier process. Thanks.

My 3GS is running iOS 4.0 under the Jailbreakme.com JB (gawd those were simple times, no?)

Once this new greenpois0n is released, can anyone suggest the best path to go from my current configuration to iOS 4.2.1- with my Appstore and Cydia apps and settings intact? Thanks!

EDIT- I see the poster above and I were thinking and posting basically the same thing at the same time. So guess this will be a popular subject!

There's a "manage account" section in Cydia for paid packages. Also I'm working on a package to backup the free ones, but I don't know if and when it will be available.

My suggestion? Go to Cydia and download Pkgbackup. Sync your stuff with that. Sync phone with iTunes. Update to 4.2.1, restore as backup of previous phone, then jailbreak. First thing you do, go to Cydia and download PKGbackup again then sync and bam! You're back
