  • Exec Suggests AT&T iPhone Exclusivity in US May End Soon

AT&T Mobility CEO Ralph de la Vega, in a conference call quoted by Computerworld, alluded to the end of AT&T's deal with Apple for exclusive rights as the iPhone carrier, a reference that many observers are seizing upon as a suggestion that there could soon be additional service providers for the device in the US.

In a question-and-answer session, de la Vega said "[w]e have a legacy of having a great portfolio...that will continue after the iPhone is no longer exclusive to us." Somewhat downplaying its third-quarter results that showed 3.2 million iPhone activations - of which nearly 40 percent were customers who were new to AT&T - de la Vega said that though the iPhone has been a "good source of new gross [subscribers] for us," the new iPhone users only made up only a third of the total from all devices. AT&T has has 81.6 million subscribers in the US.

In the Computerworld piece, de la Vega was quoted as upbeat about the future development of AT&T's high-speed network:
"Even if we lose exclusivity [of the iPhone], we will be the only carrier with HSPA 7.2 [a network specification being deployed at AT&T] and [new devices] will work on our network faster," de la Vega said. "I feel as strongly as ever [about] the capability of devices in our lineup and [am] super-excited about the deals with e-readers and personal navigation devices. "

De la Vega also said AT&T is now working with device manufacturers to build Android phones that will "work best" on the AT&T network. "They are terrific devices and much better on AT&T than on anybody else's network."
There have been rumors have for some time that Apple is considering Verizon Wireless as an additional carrier in the US. These suggestions seem somewhat less plausible in the wake of Verizon's aggressive marketing of its Android-based smartphone.

In the conference call, de la Vega lavished praise on the iPhone not just as a money maker but as a good product. "We spend an awful lot of time looking for the next great device and the next great technologies, and we think iPhone has set the bar," he said. "All the manufacturers are figuring out how to get close, but iPhone is still the best in the world at this point.

"I never understated the capability that Apple has...," he continued. "It's all about making it simple for customers to use the services. Others will try to emulate them, but that device by far is the best in terms of ease of use."

"Noob"???? How many apps did you contribute to in the App Store????? Your 0 to my Five. And from the looks of it, you're not even using an iPhone. It looks like your using and iPod wishing it was an iPhone. You probably downloaded the signal bars and carrier iPod tweak from Cydia. This forum doesn't concern even you. I would love to do this all night but I have a life and females blowing up my "iPhone" It's a warm night here on the beach. Peace.

You are even a major failure and a dumb***. An iPod touch user can still have knowledge about the iPhone like me. And I don't even have signal bars tweak. And first of all, it is not iPod carrier tweak, idiot. And don't even wish it was an iPhone. What is the point of getting iPhone if I already have a cell phone? Sexy look and features, maybe. I don't need to contribute to the App Store because it is mostly crap and I contribute more to jailbreaking. Is that your best combat? Quit making yourself look like stupid ****.

You are mixing iPods and iPhones there Chris. Technically speaking,

1G (first gen) = Original iPhone
      2G (second gen) = iPhone 3G
      3G (third gen) = iPhone 3Gs

People call the original iPod Touch the 2G because it was introduced after the iPhone 3G (second gen).

Back to the topic and away from the stupid immature in fighting on this thread, I would love to see the iPhone go to T-Mobile to shut VZW up. If this EVER happens I will definitely check out T-Mobile in my area. Maybe their coverage has improved beyond just the major metropolitan areas that seems to be the major complaint I keep hearing from T-Mobile customers. Seriously TMo, I can understand why your rates are low but damn, people talk on cell phones outside of major cities too...ever hear of traveling?

They should go to TMobile because a lot of people that i know prefer Tmobile way more then then AT&T and Verizon a horrible expensive company

It is logical because they are GSM but the customer base of VZW definitely has Steve Jobs seeing $$. Not to mention VZW has a piss poor line up of hardware so the iPhone really wouldn't have a lot of competition on that network.

      Storm...nope
      HTC Touch...nope
      Omnia...nope
      Droid...???

VZW device lineup is pretty pathetic but they are trying to improve from what I've noticed.

Some of you people amaze me... Why do some of you feel the need to correct every little typo people make in these threads... so he said jailbreak instead of unlock... big deal... Fact of the matter is that you probably look for just as much guidance on here as everyone else... So get off your little computer nerd high horse and cut people some slack... better yet... go out and meet a girl...

People seem to be reffering to the term 2G in multiple ways. 2G refers to the Edge network meaning the 2nd generation in data network connectivity (which is the data network the original iPhone connects to).

Then again some are using the term 2G to refer to the second iPhone that was released (iPhone 3G)

Calling the original iPhone the "iPhone 2G" makes sense since it runs on the edge network and not the 3G network, but it seems to be confusing some poor souls.

Calling it the iPhone 1G is just completely retarded. Maybe try "1st Gen iPhone" so you don't sound like you just blackra1n'd, jailbroke your first iPhone and now think your some kind of MMi ninja... We know you aren't.

And yes, here in the US, you must JB to unlock an AT&T carrier locked iPhone, unless your using some type of turbo sim type accs. which I'm not even sure are still relevant when using with the new hardware and SW updates.

Or maybe your one of the lucky people who scored an official carrier unlocked AT&T phone.

Anywho... Carrier options are only right.
