  • Apple Giving 4G iPhone a Try on Verizon?

    Image via GadgetGuide

If you're thinking this has to be just a rumor (like I think it is) you're not alone. But a lot of people are talking about a claim that has surfaced on various Apple and Mac-related websites.

This morning, 9to5Mac afforded further coverage to a story that is still developing, but one that suggests a possible collaboration between Apple and Verizon.

This news, of course, is somewhat suspect as it comes on the heels of Verizon's new Droid campaign that simply eviscerates the iPhone and lays into Apple every bit as much as it does AT&T.

Verizon may be aggressively targeting Apple’s iPhone with its latest Droid ad campaign, but that doesn’t mean the company isn’t attempting to woo Cupertino, at least so it appears on report the next-gen iPhone is already being tested on Verizon’s network.
The report first surfaced on FoneFrenzy.com and claimed that Verizon Wireless CEO, Lowell McAdam, is no stranger to Cupertino as he has allegedly paid more than a few visits to Apple, adding that "Apple is testing a CDMA iPhone on the Verizon 4G LTE network."
“The tests have been taking place for the last couple of months and but with no confirmation on the release date,” this report claims.
Although it sounds like an out-and-out rumor, you never know. Naturally, it make sense to get on board 4G as quickly as possible, as AT&T’s 3G coverage continues to be weighed down by data demands and unbridled iPhone expansion. If Verizon stays ahead of AT&T on developing a sound 4G infrastructure, it would make smart business sense for Apple to shy away from extending its exclusive agreement with AT&T.

Are we getting ahead of ourselves with this speculation? Definitely. But - true or false - the web is buzzing today with talk of Apple's rumored beneath-the-radar teamwork with AT&T.

All this must be put through the other recent claims that Apple and AT&T have hitched up an extension of their existing exclusivity, which could make for no deal detente between Apple and Verizon at this time. Also, we're by no means certain of the veracity of the Fone Frenzy claim.

I called Verizon the other day to ask about early termination..the woman asked what I was interested in and I told her the iPhone...now I know she's only a customer service rep and what ever "inside info" she has doesn't mean its 100% true but when I asked about VZW getting the iPhone she said "i have to tell you that its not happening, we're not getting the iPhone"

So maybe she knows something...maybe she doesn't. Knowing I was thinking about leaving for AT&T, why would she even tell me that? It pretty much sealed the deal for me to leave.

only way Apple is leaving AT&T is if the FCC forces them to do so.

This is just retarded. VZW is picking on apple like right now, I doubt apple would be receptive to that.

This just in!! Apple is going to change their EULA and allow users to instal OS X on any device/computer that they wish, with unlimited licenses, and tons an tons of netbook support!! Also, iTunes now has Zune support, built in!! Wow hahahahaha

How many more rumors about verizon/iphone seriously?

Verizon has said they will have a 4G network running next year, but than again when 1Xrtt came out in 2003 verizon claimed they had a 3G network. 1xrtt runs at the same speed as EDGE on at&t/tmobile except that EDGE is a 2G technology. So when i see it i will believe it because for all we know verizons 4G network will be 4-5mbps in the real world and call that 4G which is almost pathetic.

in 2010 when this 4G is really happening i will believe that maybe theirs a possibility of a 4G iphone on verizon. thats if someone can even manufactured a 4G cellphone radio which i don't know if its done yet. otherwise we will have to wait to summer 2011 when at&t and verizon are both on the 4G train and the ball is rolling.

I very severely doubt that Apple would put their product onto a service thats using product marketing like THIS for their other devices:

Verizon has revealed more details about its marketing campaign against the iPhone. A new site presents the user with the following phrases...

      iDon't have a real keyboard

      iDon't run simultaneous apps

      iDon't take night shots

      iDon't allow open development

      iDon't customize

      iDon't run widgets

      iDon't have interchangeable batteries

      Everything iDon't

Users are then asked to input their email address to be notified when "compromise has been deactivated"

A countdown timer apparently is set to countdown til October 30th when the Motorola Sholes may be launched.

if the FCC deems that the apple/at&T exclusivity is anti-competitive they could force apple/at&t to open the iphone to other carriers.

After all the problems that I have with AT&T, I would gladly switch to VZW. If VZW comes out with 4G technology that is significantly better coverage and a lot sooner than AT&T is able to put out, I don't see why Apple wouldn't expand their product to other carriers. I doubt they are going to be holding a grudge like junior-high girls and refuse billions of dollars because VZW said something mean about them...

Man a CDMA iPhone would suck A $ $ ! There would be no need for unlocks Anymore. It's not like you could just pop another SIM card in there and continue living life. Nope! You're just bound to that model....boooring. GSM FTW! on the other hand I do know that the blueberry tropical storm has a SIM card and is obviously used on V network. Maybe possible to use that SIM with current iPhone models??? Yes/No?

My sister is a big wig at Verizon corporate, and trust me if this was true she would be rubbing this in my face. So no, I haven't heard nothing if this.

with the soon release of the Motorola Droid on Verizon and their slams at the iPhone in their commercials it is clear that they have decided to put heavy pressure on the manufacturers they work with to give them something to compete or beat the iPhone and i can not see why they would even want the iPhone at this point.

if you read about the new Moto Droid anywhere you will not find anyone dissing it that is looking at with an open mind and are not slighted towards antyhing else like iPhone or BB or whatever.

i want the DROID badly. i will most likely be picking one up and using pay as go while i play around with it.

i really like my iPhone but the open source OS and the specs of this new DROID are beyond impressive.

this DROID will be Verizons flagship phone to fill the big whole that the iPhone left in their product line.

I am tired of all the crap coverage AT&T has in my area and in my workplace . That being said , I would love to see the iphone elsewhere , but why doesnt Apple just develop a phone just like the iphone for other carriers with some improvements and call it something other than the iphone ? Of course this new phone would be able to use everything at the app store and include Flash technology . Yeah right , wake up .

I hope the rumor is true. That would be so nice if iPhone is available for both AT&T and Verizon customers. Apple stock would be ten point heavier. I'm crossing my fingers.
