  • Apple Yanks EyeTV App

    Image via blogcdn.com

If you haven't already noticed, EyeTV is nowhere to be found this weekend in Apple's App Store. The latest offering from Elgato Systems has officially been yanked by Apple.

And Elgato is taking responsibility for their mistake that prompted the snafu.

The disappearance occurred only hours after MacRumors began reporting the discovery of "an easter egg in EyeTV iPhone application that allowed users to stream live TV to their devices over 3G wireless networks."

While the workaround had been present since the application's launch late last month, it hadn't gained significant publicity until yesterday, and Apple quickly moved to pull the application from the App Store due to its agreement with AT&T not to allow television signals to be "redirected" to mobile devices.
Live TV streams are anathema to both Apple and AT&T, unless of course they take place over Wi-Fi, not the 3G network.

While the ability to watch streaming TV via the EyeTV app has existed since the app was formally launched in September, no one really noticed - including Apple - until the last few days. (Something tells me, however, that more than a few users were well-aware of this functionality and tried to keep it quiet before anyone noticed.)

Elgato's Mike Evangelist responded to the yanked app and Apple's complaint by saying that the streaming functionality was an error on their part and that active steps will be taken to resolve the issue and return EyeTV to the app store as quickly as possible.

"Some test code that enabled live TV streaming over the cellular network was accidentally left in the EyeTV app. Apple requested that we remove the code since their agreement with AT&T does not allow redirecting TV signals over the cellular network. The code was removed and a 1.0.1 version of the EyeTV app was submitted. We expect EyeTV to return to the App Store when the 1.0.1 version is approved."

Ok, so this is a little off topic but...

Do you need some sort of prior service/hardware in use (like sling player) to use this?

I think the sling player stuff is really cool, but I'm not going to go out and get a complete DVR/provider/any other hardware replacement just so I can stream TV to my phone.

Is there a solution for people who have Dish/DirectTV/...whatever...?

You still need a Mac to run this regardless . I wonder if Apple will start monitoring their apps more closely after this boner.

If you guys are trying avoid talking about anything illegal, you might want to stop discussing "jailbreaks and firmware hacks." From what I know, Apple says it's illegal and could sue you for it because there is no DMCA exemption yet. Also, Modmyi may want to take down it's illegal jailbreak software distribution repository too. Illegal is pretty subjective these days and I would hope the people who run this forum would realize that they are indulging in hypocrisy when scolding others for talking about "illegal" iPhone activities.

Might want to revise the rules, so that it's clear what illegal activities are condoned by this forum.

We have been through this before...Jailbreaking is not illegal and the software hosted here is not illegal either.

I've been really enjoying the app and it is a great compliment to the EYETV system. I'm using the big HD homerunner base station so I get some pretty damn good streams.

What about Orb? This streams over 3G and it is sold in the app store for $9.99. I use it every once in awhile for live TV with a Hauppauge Win HVR 950Q on the host PC. This USB tuner can do QAM, but Orb doesn't use that. Works very well with the analog cable channels!

      EyeTV + iPhone + 3G unrestrictor.......

Then add your IP address of the host computer where your EyeTV is located...........

Take iPhone to the car and leave........

Stream EyeTV to iPhone using 3g unrestrictor and drive down the road with 200+ paid channels of your Comcast cable.

Now take a patched iphone audio/video cable and connect it to your iphone and plug it into the back of your Navigation input.....

Enjoy your 200+ channels of Comcast cable over 3G in your car on your tv screens like you are sitting on your couch.

      EyeTV FTMFW.............
