  • Are Verizon's New Commercials iPhone "Attack Ads"?

    Image via erictric.com

It isn't news, but its making headlines this weekend: Verizon doesn't like AT&T... or Apple.

And, frankly, Verizon wants us to know it. Consequently, it seems Verizon is behind the launch of what some are calling a blatant "attack ad" on the iPhone that rivals some of the worst political attack ads we've seen in recent years.

The ”iDevice” is what Verizon is calling the iPhone in the ad.

    From TheiPhoneBlog.com:

Verizon has now aired their first new Android 2.0-centric, anti-iPhone (technically “iDon’t iDevice”) attack ad and placed a new website online to go with them.
The campaign has already been rolled out, but if you're yet to see the controversial commercial in question, it will reportedly be featured prominently during Sunday's NFL games.

    Here's Daring Fireball's take:

“Droid” is going to be a Verizon-owned brand. It’s purportedly a Motorola-manufactured phone, but Verizon is the licensee of the “Droid” trademark. (Which name, by the way, strikes me as the perfect name for an Android OS phone — sort of implicitly establishes it as the Android phone.) That’s the big thing. Verizon doesn’t see itself as a mere carrier for other companies’ phones. It sees itself as being bigger than the phones. It’s Verizon-vs.-Apple in this spot, not Verizon-vs.-AT&T.
No matter which carrier is behind an "attack ad," I hate to see competition devolve into mudslinging, which is exactly what the "iDevice" mockery add truly is. Instead of emphasizing the quality attributes of a handset or its carrier, this campaign resorts to little more than simply degrading a competitor.

So what can we glean from these ads? Call me crazy but if Apple should allow their exclusivity deal with AT&T to expire, it's unlikely that the iPhone will find a home at Verizon any time soon.

The only thing that makes the Iphone a better phone is the fact you can Jailbreak it. Everything the Iphone can do right now the HTC touch pro can do and more since you can design your own OS from scratch. Dont get me wrong I like the Iphone I like what apple has done but when you look at some of the basic things a smart phone should be able to do apple falls short. IE: 3gs can you launch safari right out of the box and have access to a flash designed web site?

Verizon is far and away a better service provider in my area and the prices are not really any different. AT&T is crap when it comes to coverage but I deal with it because I like the iPhone that much.

But if Verizon can bring a Google Android device to the table that is robust enough to rival and/or beat the iPhone in features and inspire 3rd party app development then it can only mean better phones for everyone in the future. Apple and AT&T will not be able to rest on their laurels and get away with ridiculous BS like the denying iPhone users MMS service for years or Apple denying amazing apps that Android phones will embrace.

BUT, I guess the rumored Apple/Verizon partnership isn't gonna happen lol.

Im hoping Droid is a better phone, because it forces apple to look at things the consumer wants. Maybe then they will realize, the phone world isnt like the computer world and lighten up on there grip they have over the iphone.

Personally if i could theme the phone, and have quick reply/send i wouldn't really even worry about if a jailbreak was possible.

I love it, more power to Verizon! I hope they make the Iphone look like tonka toy. Apple will have to make major improvements. Win for us consumers. There is nothing wrong with stating the facts, that Apple and their iphone has lots of room for improvement,by the way, their computers are not near as perfect as some in here like to think. If Apple don`t like being called out, do something about it.

What all the clever reparteé also addresses, in deferred mode is: the iPhone has become the "measuring stick" for their offerings. I came from the Symbian platform, which has apps to cover pretty much everything out there. They also have "jailbreaking" and a million ways of modding the phones. I chose the iPhone because of the "experience". It's not perfect, has a lot of room for improvement but it does most of what we "need" and misses a little of what we "want". Just like every other one...

Like how come EyeTV and Slingplayer aren't allowed to stream, citing AT&T's "policy" of not allowing live streaming TV, but Orb can do it? Or any other phone that supports Slingplayer, such as Windows Mobile? Both companies have so far gotten away with doing whatever they damn well please, maybe some competition will give some power back to the customer. If mud slinging starts to get things done, I say drag 'em thru the mud, face down, by their so far numb corporate testicles.
      EXACTLY.

While i do believe the iPhone is THE phone to have- it does everything, is stylish and intuitive to use, i have to say that some hardcore competition will only make BOTH products better.

Truthfully, my iPhone is giving me so many problems, even since the update, that if they dont give me a new one next time i take it in, i will seriously reconsider being an iPhone owner. Not that i dislike AT&T, but truthfully, their service doesnt live up to what its talked up to being. I often lose my internet for no goddamn reason or my phone recently will just say it needs to be plugged into iTunes at random times. Its not worth all the hassle for my $80 phone bill.

In other news Verizon confirms the new phone will be a bit larger than the super slim iphone, but an executive for marketing the new Verizon phone was quoted as saying "quite honestly we need all the help making a bulge in our pocket we can get".

Just because it goes against something, doesn't mean its an attack. Its called "Constructive Critisism" people.

I would be incredible happy if the iPhone had 4/7 of the listed features. It doesn't, and Verizon is adressing it, and releasing what "THEY" believe is a better phone.

Will it be? It better, cuz if it isn't, verizon loses A LOT of credibility...

      Edit:
wait, you guys think verizon is expensive? I really hope your not comparing it to having an iPhone with an AT&T plan...
you say verizon is cheap and at&t costs a crap load? think again buddy. all you gotta do is get the crapiest service from at&t and upgrade it to an iphone. mine started out as a $10 a month junk phone and i upgraded to a 3gs for 30 bucks more a month. so i only pay 40 dollars a month and about 55 dollars total with taxes included.

$10 a month plan? How many minutes/texts other services besides data? I'd like to get that plan. I guess I'll call, ask for a 3G S and tell them I want the $10 a month voice plan. I might have to give a few over the phone "nudges" for that right???

Well I am an iphone owner and love that Verizon went after them in that ad!!! They need someone to fight them and maybe that will get apple to stop being so big headed thinking they are on top and cant be dealt with. I am tired of apple not allowing certain apps on the iphone or no customizing you have to jailbreak to do anything. Then its the dropped calls every now and then or 3G service decides to stop after a few minutes.

I am just tired of Apple and AT&T both when it comes to the iphone. When ever the 4G launches I will see where the jailbreaking is at that point or if its even possible and what this new Verizon phone is doing. Hopefully Apple will take their foot out there *** and wake up and give its customers what they want. But at this point I highly doubt that, I think Apple will still be the same and overly protective of the iphone.

      Here's the bottom line:

Anybody who actually gives a crap about any of the stuff Verizon says the iPhone can't do, has actually jailbroken their phone and can not only do what Verizon says they can't, but much more. There is no phone in existence that can out perform a properly Jailbroken iPhone on the latest firmware, hands down end of discussion.

Sorry but any points that anyone tries to make can be foiled. For example:

iDon't want a real keyboard. (I like the way it can change, and how the buttons aren't too small for my fingers or take up space on the phone).

iDo run multiple apps QUITE WELL thanks to backgrounder and Kirikao or whatever.

iTake all the nightshots I want with the plethora of 3rd party software available for shooting/editing with the iPhone. But if I'm really trying to take pictures, I use my DSLR anyways, who uses a phone to take shots of anything important?!

iUse open development apps every day, all I DO is use open development apps. There are so many available in Cydia/Rock that the open development apps alone outnumber the apps verizon has in their official wannabe stores.

iHave a custom background different from my locked wall paper, special icons and custom keyboards/keypads. There are more themes available than a TI-86 can even count to. There's even an app called Customize. Way to do your research Verizon.

iRun widgets all day. There are so many mobile substrate apps that knock this one out of the park, including things like Intelli Screen.

iDon't need interchangeable batteries. That's just clunky and cheap. I'm not going to keep ANY phone long enough that I'll need to replace a battery, so I'd rather have it cooped up in there where it's safe and can't fall out or get knocked loose etc.

Everything Droid can do I can do better, i(Phone) can do anything better than Droid.

iHate Verizon, AT&T, Apple, iPhone fanboys. iDont care about Sprint or T-Mobile becuase quite frankly they are the 3rd and 4th carrier and have no chance in this market. Bottom line is that no matter what carrier your on, what phone you have your going to be a fanboy for them. How many of you had Verizon before getting the iPhone and now are anti-Verizon?

We as consumers can't win, theres always going to be competition. Carriers are going to be competitive and its for the best of us. I have swapped phones and carriers several times. Maybe when we get to LTE you can stick with your carrier of choice and unlock the phone.

Grow up with bashing the ads. You all contradict yourself anyway.

      Apple fanboy at it's highest!!

Yes I own and iPhone but honestly you need to come to realization that there are other phones out there with better features than the iPhone has. I also own a Blackberry for this reason.

Thank god someone is stepping up to the plate apple. If that droid phone could sync w/ iTunes, had enough capacity, and truly open development, I don't think there is much that would keep my w/ an iPhone. I would never have purchased an iphone if I couldnt jailbreak it. Whats the point in paying for something that i don't even have control over. Kudos verizon, I hope that driod phone kicks apples and att's ***.

Although I HATE verizon's lack of simcards. And given how tight strung they usually are with their firmware, I am wondering how "open" this droid phone will really be.
