  • AT&T is on Pins and Needles over MMS Launch

    Image via LarryFire

Multiple reports have been published in the last few hours suggesting that AT&T is anything but calm, cool, and collected going into Friday's introduction of MMS for the iPhone.

According to Apple Insider, preliminary tests have indicated a great strain on the company's MMS servers. This "strain" is believed to have been responsible for a "test outage" yesterday. So anxious are the people at AT&T that the company will use every minute between today and tomorrow to shore up capacity to a greater extent than current measures have already provided.

A note published by DSLReports cited a source familiar with the company's MMS upgrade as saying, "Starting at 10AM Eastern (on the 25), AT&T will send out a mass text to a group of iPhone users telling them that MMS now works on their phone. Assuming all goes well, "They will keep doing groups of phones on the hour throughout the day," the source said. Official word from company spokesman Seth Bloom said the upgrade would be targeted at early afternoon on the East Coast, or late morning for users on Pacific Time.
Sources close to the project are estimating that traffic on AT&T's wireless network could prove in excess of 40% higher tomorrow as iPhone users jump head first into the service they feel is both long overdue and their birth right as iPhone owners.

But, at least for now, everything is on track and on schedule for the MMS launch tomorrow morning. AT&T even updated its Facebook page to alleviate concerns that further delays lie ahead. "MMS Update: We know you’ve been eager for this service so we wanted to offer a quick update on the launch plans for MMS on Friday, Sept. 25," said the message. "Late morning, Pacific Time, on Friday, the new carrier settings update enabling MMS should be live and ready to download through iTunes. We’ll provide the steps and all of the details you need right here at that time."

We first learned that September 25th would be the "go date" this past July, when AT&T said that MMS features would finally come to the iPhone. Now the moment of truth is upon us.

    Tomorrow should be interesting.

Okay just to show my squirly ignorance but I have 3.1, on a 3G and do NOT have the ability to send or receive MMS. I must be the one they're making the example of, lol, I hacked it, I even have the little camera button in my messaging and yes, MMS is enabled in my settings but alas... no pictures for me. I don't know if I can last 20 hours or so. btw, San Francisco CA here, maybe that has something to do with it.. geographically. Dunno.

Although this maybe true i think cydia allows a hack that enables the MMS feature that is seen on 3g and 3gs to be used with a 2g iPhone. If you have the right at&t plan (messaging unlimited) it could probably allow you to have MMS send/recieve.

i'm not 100% positive but it could work..doesn't hurt to try!GL

So, I did the ipcc update that was posted here a week or so ago... Everything seemed peachy. I could send MMS no problem. But I can not receive. Every time my phone tries to receive a MMS, I hear about half of the message received tone and then my 3GS drops signal. Take a few seconds to come back online. I go into my messages just to see if by chance I did receive something, but no-go.

Anybody else experiencing this? I know others in my area (Dallas) who have it working fine. I'm on a 3GS at 3.0 . Jailbroken of course so that's why I haven't updated.

by 2011 i see verizon/sprint maybe even t-mobile rocking 4G phones, while most at&t users are still on 3.5G HSPA.

as soon as a 4G phone comes out in the NYC area im jumping ship, and unless at&t turns up the heat, they will be the only carrier still rocking HSPA when everyone is 4G Wimax/LTE.

I don't know why mod's/staff are rocking at&t so hard anyways,

does at&t call you and give you a big fat check for sticking up for them?
You honestly think t-mobile is going to 4g? lol they barely even have 3g in all of U.S..i see no 4g in near future for them. Their network is primitive. Verizon and sprint on the other hand I can see that.

But to whoever wrote that crap about wishing MMS will crash AT&T’s network…shame on you. You assclown…to actually say such a thing like that shows your are selfish and ignorant.

Honestly you never know, they are already jumping straight into HSPA+ 21Mbps compared to AT&T's HSPA 7.2Mbps.

Secondly remeber T-mobile USA is small but its big brother Deutches Telekom is huge and has a lot of money.

This isn't like the iPhone came out in June.
It's been three years. If 3 going on 4 years isn't enough time for them to update the system then all the time in the world isn't going to help them

I hope mms shuts down AT&T and apple realizes it's time for a new carrier or atleast to add another one to the list.
Dude! You've got over 400 posts here and you still don't know that the iPhone came out in 2007? Or maybe you can't count. 2009-2007=2 years. The first iPhone came out 2 years and a few months ago. That's nowhere NEAR 4 years.

And you just don't understand. The more time goes by, the more updates are released, both software and hardware, and the more people buy iPhones. AT&T IS constantly updating their network, but they're having a touch time keeping up with all the new iPhone subscribers. End the exclusivity and give Verizon the iPhone, and watch their network start getting worse while AT&T's gets better.

Yes, MMS works on a jailbroken 2G iphone. Its called ActivateMMS2G I think.

And I am also confused as to why AT&T can't handle iphone MMS messages. Everyone else already has MMS AND do most iphone users even have a text plan?

If the carrier settings version they release tomorrow is less than 5.0 then I am afraid that people may not see it because iTunes will think your hacked version is the latest one. If that is the case then you need to return to the stock carrier settings. I uploaded it here Good luck everyone!

Is there a difference between the real and hacked way? As long as it works, it's fine, right?

The only difference is the real way will block all attempts of tethering and access to the cellular data settings menu. I am hoping when they release the new one, I can edit it to allow for those things

That's what I did but it requires also that AT&T not have MMS blocked on your line. more and more people are getting it now. My theory is that they don't want a swarm of people tomorrow so they've been rolling it out little by little. I did exactly as you did and I got no where except a camera button, lol. *shakes fist at AT&T*
