  • AT&T is on Pins and Needles over MMS Launch

    Image via LarryFire

Multiple reports have been published in the last few hours suggesting that AT&T is anything but calm, cool, and collected going into Friday's introduction of MMS for the iPhone.

According to Apple Insider, preliminary tests have indicated a great strain on the company's MMS servers. This "strain" is believed to have been responsible for a "test outage" yesterday. So anxious are the people at AT&T that the company will use every minute between today and tomorrow to shore up capacity to a greater extent than current measures have already provided.

A note published by DSLReports cited a source familiar with the company's MMS upgrade as saying, "Starting at 10AM Eastern (on the 25), AT&T will send out a mass text to a group of iPhone users telling them that MMS now works on their phone. Assuming all goes well, "They will keep doing groups of phones on the hour throughout the day," the source said. Official word from company spokesman Seth Bloom said the upgrade would be targeted at early afternoon on the East Coast, or late morning for users on Pacific Time.
Sources close to the project are estimating that traffic on AT&T's wireless network could prove in excess of 40% higher tomorrow as iPhone users jump head first into the service they feel is both long overdue and their birth right as iPhone owners.

But, at least for now, everything is on track and on schedule for the MMS launch tomorrow morning. AT&T even updated its Facebook page to alleviate concerns that further delays lie ahead. "MMS Update: We know you’ve been eager for this service so we wanted to offer a quick update on the launch plans for MMS on Friday, Sept. 25," said the message. "Late morning, Pacific Time, on Friday, the new carrier settings update enabling MMS should be live and ready to download through iTunes. We’ll provide the steps and all of the details you need right here at that time."

We first learned that September 25th would be the "go date" this past July, when AT&T said that MMS features would finally come to the iPhone. Now the moment of truth is upon us.

    Tomorrow should be interesting.

i had used the workaround for about a week now but its useless since most of the ppl i know and talk to have an iphone but they like it stock(pussies), and it should be interesting to see if there's a server overload from everyone and their mothers downloading this carrier update tomorrow!

Wait, the unofficial way allows access to the cellular data network settings? I was wondering how it showed up on my phone.

If you hacked your iTunes to allow the carrier file update for your iPhone, and if you wanted to, you can just plug your friends' iPhones into your computer and update the file in less than 5 seconds. Then reboot the phone and voila!

But I suppose it's too late since it comes out officially tomorrow morning.

The JB community with working MMS should shoot off a couple MMS's at 9AM Eastern just to screw with AT&T because they have been screwing with us too long now! I'm horrible and I know it.

I wouldn't apply the ipcc tomorrow. I would use one of the other ones so that if you haven't already gone to 3.1, you can still tether.

I wish people cared as much about tethering as they do sending themselves pictures of people with mullets.

      Hey Stealth,

You think this will have any effect on PDAnet users? I couldn't live without it. LOL

people with mullets...LOL! There is a few of those around here where I live, Georgia 15 miles from the Alabama state line.
I was going to ask that same question, the new ipcc for the MMS tomorrow, I'm 99% positive it will kill the tethering option we have on 3.0.1 and some folks in 3.1, I doubt it it will remain since tethering is not a provided service at the moment, mine works like a charm, handy on the last 4 days with the power outage during the storms (I have a converter with a car battery for emergencies), usb to MacPro and I was surfing the net , like you, I'm not updating the ipcc for now.

It's really more of an issue with 3.1 than with 3.0 or 3.01.

      Thank you!!

I was,and I am sure I speak for 90% of iPhone users, so frustrated with this MMS bs and try to write settings! I updated with the best files for the AT&T carrier. I called and got frustrated with retards at At&t and no results!!! I tried today and over the past month, OVER and OVER again, with NO results!!
I got very busy at work today and said: " F*&k it, I'll see and try it tomorrow!!"
I got home and tried to add a smart *** comment to your comment with a " what settings or file u added to your iPhone?!?" and then I said to myself.... hmmm....it is after 10:40pm, let me try again!!
IT IS WORKING FOR ME NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CENTRAL FLORIDA !!!! TRY AGAIN!!!

I sent tons of pics to all my "looser" friends ( "looser" = non jailbreak and have no clue how to update the ipcc file)

AWESOME!!! Ill be up all night and MMS people!!!!

      FINALLY!!!
      LOL :P
