  • AT&T is on Pins and Needles over MMS Launch

    Image via LarryFire

Multiple reports have been published in the last few hours suggesting that AT&T is anything but calm, cool, and collected going into Friday's introduction of MMS for the iPhone.

According to Apple Insider, preliminary tests have indicated a great strain on the company's MMS servers. This "strain" is believed to have been responsible for a "test outage" yesterday. So anxious are the people at AT&T that the company will use every minute between today and tomorrow to shore up capacity to a greater extent than current measures have already provided.

A note published by DSLReports cited a source familiar with the company's MMS upgrade as saying, "Starting at 10AM Eastern (on the 25), AT&T will send out a mass text to a group of iPhone users telling them that MMS now works on their phone. Assuming all goes well, "They will keep doing groups of phones on the hour throughout the day," the source said. Official word from company spokesman Seth Bloom said the upgrade would be targeted at early afternoon on the East Coast, or late morning for users on Pacific Time.
Sources close to the project are estimating that traffic on AT&T's wireless network could prove in excess of 40% higher tomorrow as iPhone users jump head first into the service they feel is both long overdue and their birth right as iPhone owners.

But, at least for now, everything is on track and on schedule for the MMS launch tomorrow morning. AT&T even updated its Facebook page to alleviate concerns that further delays lie ahead. "MMS Update: We know you’ve been eager for this service so we wanted to offer a quick update on the launch plans for MMS on Friday, Sept. 25," said the message. "Late morning, Pacific Time, on Friday, the new carrier settings update enabling MMS should be live and ready to download through iTunes. We’ll provide the steps and all of the details you need right here at that time."

We first learned that September 25th would be the "go date" this past July, when AT&T said that MMS features would finally come to the iPhone. Now the moment of truth is upon us.

    Tomorrow should be interesting.

I did this, twice now, complete with seperate reboots, no dice. It did drop my wireless networks so I know I did the right thing, but no MMS. This is on a Jailbroken 3Gs phone.

EDIT: As an added bonus I can no longer join any wireless networks now. Awesome!

      Let's start over.

      1. Download the .zip file and change the extension to .ipcc.
      2. Using iTunes 8.2, go to iclarified article that I posted to allow your iTunes to recognize .ipcc files
      3. Connect phone and open iTunes. Highlight your iphone in the left panel of itunes.
      4. Hold down the SHIFT key and click on CHECK FOR UPDATE or UPDATE or RESTORE button in the right panel in Itunes.
      5. A box should open with file and folders in it. At the bottom, there is a box called "files of type". Scroll to "iphone carrier configuration files (*.ipcc)"
      6. Select the file in step #1 where ever you saved it.
      7. It should take less than 30 seconds to update.
      8. Check under settings>>general>>about on the phone. The Carrier should now be AT&T 5.5.
      9. Some have reported that shutting down phone and turning it back on will help at this point.

Mine worked on 3GS, so I can't comment on 3G phones.

      Good luck.

You can change what file you are looking for from ipsw to ipcc. You can update your carrier settings via SSH. you would only need to do that if it isn't working on iTunes. If it isn't working on iTunes it's prob cause you somehow altered your carrier settings. Example, on cydia I downloaded the better AT&T carrier logo. That itself alters your carrier setttings to get the logo to show up. Just uninstall it from cydia and you should be good to go.

This worked for me...I hope it works for you.

I have a 3gs, jail broken and running on 3.0 with itunes 9.01.

I downloaded the new ipcc located earlier on the thread.

I followed the youtube [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nByjfsJzFb0]YouTube - How to Enable MMS on iPhone 3G/3GS on 3.0 3.0.1 3.1 firmware Windows XP and Vista[/ame]

and everything is working great, even on my girlfriends 3g.

So it worked for me on 9.01 so I hope it works for you.

Well I got my text from AT&T say I can get mms now but the problem is to get it u must update to 3.1 to get the update threw iTunes so if some body did this if they could just find the files for the carier update and share them that would be great because as u know there is no jailbreak for 3.1 yet

SUCCESS! That YT clip did it for me, now if only my wireless network would start working again....dunno why resetting that made me not able to connect anymore. I've reset the DHCP clients list on the router side, no dice.
