  • Google Sync - Now with PUSH GMAIL support.
Today, Google has finally answered the call of pretty much everyone who has an iPhone and a Gmail account. Google Sync, a free service from Google which allows you to push Calendar and Contacts over the air now finally supports Gmail.

Using Google Sync, you can now get your Gmail messages pushed directly to your phone. Having an over-the-air, always-on connection means that your inbox is up to date, no matter where you are or what you're doing. Sync works with your phone's native email application so there's no additional software needed. Only interested in syncing your Gmail, but not your Calendar? Google Sync allows you to sync just your Contacts, Calendar, or Gmail, or any combination of the three.

To try Google Sync, visit m.google.com/sync from your computer. If you're already using Google Sync, learn how to enable Gmail sync. Since push Gmail has been a popular request on our Product Ideas page and Help Forum, we look forward to hearing your feedback, so drop us a line and let us know how it's working or what you'd like to see next.

Update at 8:20am: We jumped the gun on this post. The new feature should be rolling out in a few minutes.
If you're already using Google Sync, then enabling Gmail support is as easy and going to you mail settings, deleting the IMAP gmail account and enabling Mail under Google Sync.

So there you have it! Now there's no longer a need to buy a stupid app that let's you know when you have mail or setting up complicated growl services.

Deleting mail from phone or moving it to the Trash folder wipes the e-mail completely. Anyone else with this issue?

What you described is PULL EMAIL, not PUSH. If your email program has to check in set intervals (i.e. 15 mins, 30 mins, etc.) then it is PULLING emails from your server.

PUSH is the server "pushing" the email to your phone without your phone having to constantly check every 15 mins for email. So PUSH will definitely save on battery life, since it doesn't have to check for emails every 15 mins.

Deleting the email on the phone should archive it. Moving it to the trash properly deletes it.

Got it! I wish it would move it to my Gmail's Trash archive when I delete it from the phone... That was how it worked when I used IMAP.

^ Maybe you're typing the wrong PW?

Well pw should be correct, I receive & send mail just fine... everything seems to work.

I just tried moving to trash and also just hitting the delete icon, and it looks like it will move everything to the "All Mail Archive" no matter how I attempt to delete the mail.

I will stick with GPush. In Gpush its handy that a preview of the message pops up so you dont have to view the full thing if you dont want to.

I'm got GriP installed and GPush can't preview with it. GriP will preview pushed Gmail. And it's free.

Here's a message from Google about that:

Mail, Calendar & Contacts Sync: Battery Life
Depending on your device, any push connection may use more power than fetching content at intervals. In some cases the difference in power usage may have a noticeable impact on your phone's battery life. To save battery life, turn off Push in your phone's settings and fetch content every 30 or 60 minutes.

Why would you delete mail in Gmail? The whole point of Gmail is to never delete anything? It's with it has a never-ending amount of space (up to 7.3GB right now on free accounts)

PS: If you could do that on IMAP then you didn't properly set it up using Google's recommended settings

So what's the best way to receive new e-mail notifications? I liked the GPush notifications, but there seems to be no way to enable push notifications for google push e-mail. Is grip the best way? Can you keep GPush jsut for the popups? Am I missing a setting to get the notifications without any addons?

      Hey everyone,

It's currently defaulting to only downloading 28 days - I'm looking into this, although I think we need to let the initial rush calm down a little before we do anything too drastic.

Hey what is the difference with this and going into mail accounts/gmail? You already get badges, does this add mail preview popups as part of the push?

Mail accounts / Gmail sets your mail account as IMAP. This uses your exchange slot and sets gmail (and calendar/contacts) as push.

In theory, push will deliver messages instantaneously or at least much quicker than IMAP. That being said, gmail push is dealing with some growing pains and has lagged from time to time. Push mail by itself does not give you popups; you still need third-party software for that. I installed grip (from Cydia) and it works pretty well, especially in connection with the "you've got mail" addon. If you go that route, make sure to get grip 0.1-11r, as earlier versions did not work that well on my phone.
