Cult of Mac has a simple straightforward hack to enable MMS messaging on your iPhone 3G or 3GS if you just can't wait... or if, like me, you have fun playing around in your phone's guts a little.

It takes about three minutes, and Leander Kahney warns that some users have said it doesn't work. Your mileage, as always, may vary.

Odd. So close itunes, run the command shown in that site i linked, restart itunes and it still wants you to update to 3.1? Which OS is your computer running?

vista home premium. yes, i've run the command multiple times. i tried it with itunes open once and it brought itunes to the front so i'm assuming it's changing the program when itunes is closed. i've typed it out and copy/pasted it.

i didn't try updating before running the command prompt, though. i don't know if the command itself is keeping me from doing it but i don't see why it would anyway. that's why i figured there might be something in preferences i overlooked. i've gone through the guides multiple times with no luck.

if i have time tonight i may uninstall itunes and reinstall it. anyone know which files i should copy to keep all my backups/info/ratings and all that?

When you are in the command prompt in windows vista, and you type out that command are you putting the quotes in it or no? if no then add the quotes in the command
If that helps you at all please use that lovely thanks button

I can pretty much assure you that the lack of quotes IS the problem

Now I'm talking to an incompetent ATT man who is reading me his instructions word for word. Ughhh. I don't understand.

OMG HE IS FIGHTING WITH ME ABOUT TURNING IT OFF. I said I have, 50 times, and he says that doesn't matter, that's all that his paper says. I hung up on him. I'm done with this.

no, it doesn't like the quotes. even moving to the folder 'the old fashioned way' doesn't work. or maybe the actual /setprefint command works and something else is wrong with itunes on this pc

here are the errors copied from my command prompt:

      C:Program FilesiTunes>"C:Program FilesiTunesiTunes.exe" /setPrefInt carrier-testing 1
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

      C:Program FilesiTunes>"C:Program FilesiTunesiTunes.exe" /setPrefInt
      carrier-testing 1
The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect.

once i'm in the exe's itunes folder and try the command i assume it works. it doesn't reply with anything but it doesn't give me an error either:

      C:Program FilesiTunes>iTunes.exe /setPrefInt
      carrier-testing 1
      C:Program FilesiTunes>

^^ lol yeah that's the reason i even edited the post. the forum itself just doesn't like them i suppose. discriminative against back-slashes

      home premium 32bit.
tried 'repairing' itunes.exe through the uninstall dialog with no changes.
it gives me that same error whenever i use the quotes even when i start in C:/ instead of the default user directory. going to the file directory and only putting itunes.exe in quotes or "./itunes.exe" and then the command returns an invalid command error. the only time i don't get an error is going to the folder and typing: itunes.exe /setprefint carrier-testing 1
it doesn't return anything just gives me a new command line :dunno:

i'm assuming it worked, then. i tried it once with itunes opened and itunes came to the front so i'm really not thinking the problem is with the carrier-testing value. i have no clue what my problem is, unfortunately. seems like i may just have to wait for a 3.1 jailbreak so i get a 'check for updates' as compared to the 'update' button, perhaps..

it's supposed to launch the program? cause that doesn't happen.. i'll try it again here in a bit since i re-installed itunes

used cmd instead of command (administrator difference between terminals?)
it's working with the quotes and all now; as in no weird errors. still won't let me choose a file, though. still trying to force me to update through apple. i also killed all apple processes and left phone unplugged when running the commands. itunes won't open unless i do it physically

thanks for your guys' help. you're probably starting to feel my headache by now, too LoL

Have the phone plugged in and run cmd, as you were so that it will execute itunes. once it opens itunes make sure you are holding shift then click update. The normal Shift click on the update should have itunes trying to find the IPW file or something like that. when you run itunes using that command in cmd. Itunes will allow you to search for a Ipcc file type. If you are not seeing the file type of Ipcc then its still not opening itunes correctly through the cmd
