  • 3GS iPhones can no longer restore to 3.0

As of this morning iPhone 3GS owners can no longer restore to firmwares 3.0 or 3.0.1. This is due to the fact that Apple has stopped signing these files and if you try and restore using one you'll get an error. So this means you should be very very careful until 3.1 is jailbroken because if you mess up your phone... you can only go up to 3.1 as of now. Additionally if you do not have your IBSS and IBEC signatures and you restore, you may never be able to jailbreak again.

iPhone 3G and first generation owners should still be able to restore with no problems.

It is security built in to the 3GS that isn't there in the 3G which means they can stop any unsigned FW being installed on the 3GS but can't on the 3G

Security is a lot tighter on the 3GS but the cat and mouse play on....

aaaah this is BS. i came back from yellowstone national park and my iphone was completely dead. tried recharging it. nothing happened. wont turn on. tried everything. no luck. went to apple, no way to fix it, they replaced it. now im stuck with a 3.0.1 fw with no way of grabbing the ibec and ibss files (i have the two files for the iphone apple replaced....but that wont do crap)....GRRR GRRRR. just jailbroke with redsn0w. now ill jsut have to wait for the devteam to figure out a way around this without the ibec or ibss. i hope they do find a way

At least you have 3.0.1. I had to restore before going to the Apple store and all I could install is 3.1. I didn't know they were going to replace my phone. Luckily they gave me a 3.0.1 phone.

Hey guys I have a question.. My 32gig 3GS is loosing battery real quick I take it off the charger and within 5 mins it's down to 96% just being on stand by.. I'm currently on 3.0.1 unlocked with redsn0w.. Should I go to the apple store and get my phone excahnged? Or should I wait till the 3.1 and the ECID issues are resolved.. Btw I did select the " make my life easier" option on cydia..
      Thanks

Its going to be bad if you need your IBEC & IBSS files to jailbreak as if your phone ever breaks and you need to get a replacement from Apple your going to be F***ed

well thats what happen to me. for no reason at all it just wouldnt turn on anymore. so apple had to replace it (lucky me it had 3.0.1 on it) ....but now the ibec and ibss i saved since the day the devteam told us to do so is pointless...its not for my replacement iphone. AAAAAH!

The IBEC and IBSS files from 3.0/3.0.1 will only be useful to restore to 3.0 or 3.0.1

Once the new JB is released there won't be much of a use for them, and if you have a 3.1 phone you could grab the new 3.1 IBEC and IBSS to make sure you can always get back to 3.1

So, if your on 3.1 now and never got the files before, you won't ever get back to 3.0, but if you grab them now, you'd be able to always get back to 3.1

Basicily they are a fail safe so you will be able to get back to a previous version that Apple stops signing, of course thats once the tools to do so are released.

Now what if I had a 3GS 3.0 already JB'd. I can't restore as we discussed. But if I wanted to start over with a 3.0 JB (and having to re-install all my stuff manually), could I simply re-run redsn0w with the 3.0 IPSW, skipping the shift-restore to 3.0? What would that result in?
      You can not restore correct.

You could run redsn0w again to jailbreak over a previous jailbreak. I guess it would sort out any issues you may have, I am not 100% certain.

Know issue in the 3.x firmware.
      1. Turn off push notifcation, unless you really need it.
      2. Dim your screen as much as possible.
      3. Turn off WiFi & Location Services (aGPS) when not using it.
      4. AT&T people should turn off 3G if they do not need it or do not have 3G in their area. (T-Mobile USA 3G should already be turned off)
Not a solution, but it helps. Battery life was considerably better on firmware 2.2.

I am sure, long term, a fix will be found.

And iBSS and iBEC files grabbed now will be signed for 3.1 so useless at the moment.
The question I have and still remains unanswered is if you are already on 3.1 can you still obtain your ECID and iBEC and iBSS? You are hosed anyway, so restoring is a moot point.

Who knows if this may be helpful in the future or not, but can you do it anyway?

I have iTunes 9 running on Snow Leopard.
      I have a 2G 3.0 firmware iPhone that is currently unlocked/jailbroken.

Would I be able to upgrade to 3.1 and unlock it?

CPICH is a member of the dev team. It would stand to reason that they have their own private jailbreak working right now.

Yes, you can, but they will be 3.1 signed IBEC and IBSS files. You will not be able to get to 3.0 or 3.0.1 with them.

When apple releases 3.2 or whatever the next version is and stops allowing people to restore to 3.1, you should be able to then use those 3.1 IBEC and IBSS files to get you back to 3.1.

But nothing will get you back to 3.0.

Yes, you can still get a new ECID/IBSS/IBEC, but they will be only for 3.1 and are useless for 3.0 now and forever. But yes, it might be helpful in the future, if/when 3.1 is JB'd.

So, I'd get it, save it, but it won't get you anything now, and its not the same as it would be if you had gotten it for 3.0.

Yeah I understand this is not helpful for 3.0, 3.0.1 that wasn't my point.

But this may be something we may have to start doing for every new firmware as part of the cat and mouse game as a safety net.

I dropped my 3g iphone today and after an insurance claim with O2 I have since found that I am due to get my replacement 3GS on Monday Was very happy as only expected to get the 3G one but due to them being discontinued it will be the new one

My question is, what software will it have on it. O2 have been out of stock for a few weeks and they got a load in today.

What are the chances of it only having 3.0 or 3.0.1 or do you think I could be unlucky and it have 3.1 installed

Anyone bought a 3GS recently or had a replacement from O2 etc.

I really hope it is still in a jailbreakable state

It's probably going to be 3.1. There have been rumors floating around that Apple was holding off on 3GS deliveries until 3.1 was released, to make jailbreaking a tad harder for us new owners.

      Sorry mate.
