HSPA Coming to Six Cities By Year's End
iPhone 3GS users, among other AT&T subscribers with HSPA-capable phones, should see a speed bump by the end of the year... but only if you're in one of 6 cities scheduled for the rollout: Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles and Miami are slated for the upgrade this year.
HSPA 7.2 (7.2 Mb/s High-Speed Packet Access, which is an amalgam of the separate protocols High-Speed Download Packet Access and High-Speed Upload Packet Access) will allow - on paper -iPhone 3GS users to download at 7.2Mbps. Actual speeds will, of course, vary by usage and connection quality, but the use of better modulation schemes should boost performance significantly. In addition, improved protocols for retransmission and link utilization will increase capacity in the existing network, which has been notably struggling to keep up with increased usage.
AT&T plans to have HSPA running in 25 cities by the end of 2010, and in 90% of its current 3G service area by the end of the following year.
